Was this a moment that changed the momentum of the season?
I cannot believe that the umpire did not pay a free kick. He calls " no prior" surely regardless of prior the tackled player must make some effort to dispose of the ball legally.
Patton made no effort at all.
If the no prior overrides attempt at disposal I believe that we have got the game arse up.

A definite error by the umpire - you hear them all the time saying 'no attempt' and that is why the tackled player insanely punched the ball being held to him in an overexaggerated motion to ensure the umpire sees that they are 'trying' to dispose of it.terry smith rules wrote:Was this a moment that changed the momentum of the season?

On the flip side - OH&S says that a free could not have been awarded at that point in time - the roof would have caved in!!!!

Who cares about awarding a free kick or not.
The Giants were out and Geary landed as good a tackle for a small man on a "Giant" that I have seen.
Unbelievable tackle from Geary and Saints all night for that matter.

If the onus as I believe it should be that the player must dispose of or attempt to dispose of the ball legally then this is a free kick
If however the aim is for a player to simply maintain possession as this was adjudicated then the game has a problem (as it becomes rugby like)
