Jesus let the kid aim high and try to do game breaking plays. You want them all to play the boring Richo swarm s***. The great players do things others can't. Yes he will fail, the more you fail, the closer to success you get. You miss all the shots you never take. Are we so determined to have nothing but safe, boring, players? Players who can open the game up with brilliance often shine in grand finals where there is no space and time.

Maybe we should play him in the back pocket and make him captain. Might toughen him up, teach him to stop other players and stop trying to be so damn creative.
Re: Is Gresham trying too hard to do the spectacular?
Or let him go back to the VFL where he can play onball and learn the craft of a midfielder and get his confidence going at playing onball. Richo has this weird thing where he will refuse to play some young players in the seniors - White and Rice - and other young players he will bring straight in to the seniors in their first year and they never go out - Dunstan, Gresham. Its so bizzare. Dunstan even needed a shoulder reco after being smashed around inside against huge mids week after week. Why did he do that to Dunny?CQ SAINT wrote:Maybe we should play him in the back pocket and make him captain. Good to see Gresh not trying to add to his highlights real too much today against the Hawks.
He looked to have played a good steady game today.

Excellent match by Jade!

Re: Is Gresham trying too hard to do the spectacular?
I think he might have been tagging Hodge which I'll give props to Richo for pulling that move. Without Hodge slicing us up from the back, hawks really struggled to move the ball with any sort of fluidity. Will happily take a low possie game from Gresh for doing a good curtailing role. And popped up for a couple of bangers (one was a Joe the goose though)

Yes Gresh had a steadier game today, although he still managed a couple of shimmies.

Thought he was quiet... him and Minch not much to do when the talls kick 10 between them
Re: Is Gresham trying too hard to do the spectacular?
Sorry I forgot we are only allowed to praise VFL ruckmen who haven't even managed an AFL game yet. Have learnt my lesson about the double standard thing.

Re: Is Gresham trying too hard to do the spectacular?
Gresham is a star in the making.
He has poise, stays calm, has massive self confidence, knows where the goals are and executes brilliantly.
He makes things happen.
Yes he occasionally overdoes things but when it comes off it pays big dividends.
I'd cut him the slack to be innovative because he has that X factor with a capital X.
He could be better than Milne.

Was he on Shaw today?Enrico_Misso wrote:Gresham is a star in the making.

At half time he was probably thinking about where he had to drive to to play for Sandy next week...
Made the most of his opportunities in the second
Re: Is Gresham trying too hard to do the spectacular?
I didn't really track Gresh so not sure if he was tagging Shaw or not. He did a shut down job on Hodge last week so maybe he was on Shaw - in which case:
Shaw got 30 but wasn't his usual cutting edge self.
Gresham is a weird one too . Frawley on SEN made an interesting comment that Paddy and Gresh are basically at the same endurance level which was a bit shocking. Whether he can be a onballer with that poor endurance is a query. Is he more that mercurial small forward with a bit of time in the midfield for relief? He does seem to struggle to cover the ground with those super-thick thighs that gives him ridiculous maneuverability. He is good over a short distance but seems to tire a bit. As an onballer you have to keep chugging around the ground almost non-stop until you get a break on the bench.
He got a couple of cheap goals out the back today. Yes you can say it is good play reading to position yourself to be that last man. He has an x-factor for sure. He seems a real "watch this space" to see exactly what sort of player he will be.

Re: Is Gresham trying too hard to do the spectacular?
The last two games Gresh has essentially had him "tagging" type roles and this will help him develop.
It still allows him to roll out his class at times, but is making him a lot more focused and aware of all the things that a player needs to do in a game as he needs to concentrate on what his opponent is doing as well as trying to win the ball in his own right.

Re: Is Gresham trying too hard to do the spectacular?
The thing with Gresh is this...
He makes the most of his touches... he may not find it much, but is dangerous around the footy.
And
Whilst I downplay the premature ejaculation about him, because whilst he's shown obvious talent and a bag of tricks, he is in and out of games because his tank is not big. This may improve?
I actually think he's got a long way to go, I see him as a rover, a 25-30ppg mid who gets Brownlow votes and wins b&fs (hopefully)
Not a small forward who gets 15 and a goal or two a game, that is a Lonie/Long/Minchington sort of output.
I see 2019/2020 as the time whether we find out whether he's a gun or whether he's handy

Re: Is Gresham trying too hard to do the spectacular?
Was quiet, then really came into the game when it mattered against the Wogans.
That game could really be the making of the Gresh', and a few of his mates.
We didn't just start well and get overrun.
We didn't just start well, and then just desperately manage to hang on.
No going into our shells. No, we played to win that match. And that's what we did... pulling away from them.
And we did have several periods during the game when they were threatening to look 'just too good for us'.
And every time - we lifted, and shut them down.
Believe Saintas! Our A-game can beat anyone's A-game! And scarily for 'them', our A-game... is getting better.
So Saintas, just gotta' bring that A-game.

Quiet game from Gresh today.
His kicking was off.
And twice the umps pinged him for HTB when he had absolutely no prior opportunity!

Re: Is Gresham trying too hard to do the spectacular?
IF Lonie has another good VFL game you just wonder if its worth giving Gresh a VFL game to have a crack as an onballer to learn that craft. Its hard work playing that small forward role week in, week out and it might just be grinding him down a bit. But he seems a favourite of Richo's and hence why he may not be managed.
We need to work out if Lonie has got it at AFL level or not so you gotta keep trying him with Long lurking in the wings.

Re: Is Gresham trying too hard to do the spectacular?
Gresh has a lot more core strength than Lonie and can stand up in tackles. He was tagged heavily today but we can't drop class players
Re: Is Gresham trying too hard to do the spectacular?
Jesus, he's a second year player and he's played every single game since last year I think. He could use a break. You want another Dunstan on your hands needing a shoulder reco and looking like he's struggling. This panic about "dropping players" is paranoia. Dogs rested Murphy this week. You give young kids a break from brutal AFL but also at VFL they can try a different sort of role. If we want Gresh to be a midfielder then he needs to learn that role and he can do that in the VFL. We should be using our whole squad this year.spert wrote:Gresh has a lot more core strength than Lonie and can stand up in tackles. He was tagged heavily today but we can't drop class players

Re: Is Gresham trying too hard to do the spectacular?
I notice with Gresh, his decision making is very hit and miss.
He gets the ball, does his step and it's either a goal or bad turnover
An area of his game that could be better is ability to move the ball on when under pressure w/o being mercurial... a handball to a runner, kick it to a 1 on 1 etc
His every touch doesn't have to be the direct play to goal
