Hickey obviously been told to work on something.. in the bad books.
Happy to see guys who have featured in the best players at Sandy get an opportunity. It's all about giving games to guys who are in form, and dropping those that aren't performing.

Re: Sinclair Stevens IN Long and Dunstan Out. Rioli OUT
Some good ins I think. I've always liked Sinclair, and have thought that Stevens would be very handy for us with his physicality in the middle. We'll need that Saturday out in the elements in Tasmania. Still think Hickey is our first ruckman when fit, but have no problem with Longer in, so long as it is to give Hickey a chop out, not at his expense. Anyway, good luck to him, and I hope he plays a blinder this week against Big Ben and proves Richo correct.
We are a real chance on the weekend. We should have won last year.
It is just not the same Hawthorn that won four grand finals and narrowly lost another. This week's side includes youngsters Howe, Hartung, Hardwick, Langford, Sicily, Brand and O'Brien, and players in the twilight of their careers like Gibson and Burgoyne. We've been rebuilding since 2013 and games like this we have to win if we are to improve.
Cannot believe we are $2.05 - we are much closer than that.

Re: Sinclair Stevens IN Long and Dunstan Out. Rioli OUT
It's a modern Aussie colloquial term used in sports which just means to give someone respite. It is probably borrowed from some other language entirely. Can't be bothered looking it up - my boss at work who also coaches a local side always uses it and I've picked it up.Con Gorozidis wrote:I have never quite understood this term.give Hickey a chop out
I was referring to situations when Hickey is exhausted and needs a rest, Longer could come off the bench to play in the ruck to give him a chance to catch his breath. Or allows Hickey to rest up forward as an extra tall marking option to stretch the opposition defense.
For the record I think Hickey is our #1 ruckman too, but I am not ready to count Longer out just yet. He has a lot of potential I think.

Re: Sinclair Stevens IN Long and Dunstan Out. Rioli OUT
So team selection, and some good, and some not so good news to balance out.
Good:
Koby in for us.
Cyril out for them.
Paddy still out for us.
Jaeger in for them - that knee clearly ain't up to it.
Hartung still in for them - dud. Another rarely mentioned win from that 'Big Boy deal', was that we didn't recruit that FIGJAM receiver. (Dirtiest word in football IMHO. )
Bad:
We're still playing one man short again.
Vickery still out for them. Damn!
What're the chances of us pulling a late change? Holmesy for Billy? I'd like to see that.
But geez, looking at that Dawk's side on paper, they don't look much. We should win easily.
And we will win easily! Because this time around, the Stevens out on the field... will be wearing our jumper.

Long playing for seniors for 2 weeks will be very good for him. It will have shown him how much he needs to step up to be a regular.
He showed some excellent signs.
During the rest of the season I hope that the Saints rotate quite a number of players through the seniors.
I am for example looking forward to Marshall getting a taste of it, though I expect that will not occur till quite late in the season.

I agree. And the team picked this week is arguably our best team for the year, and best balanced.BigMart wrote: We are closer to best team imo
We had too many small forwards, and I think that Sinclair coming in will play more midfield, wing and running player than asa small forward. Though he may at times move forward as he is handy near goals. But Minch will have that role this week.
With Stevens and Sinclair both in our midfield looks much better even without Armo.
Not playing Paddy may deny him experience, but in terms of winning this week Roo who is still elite will spend more time forward and is clearly a better player than Paddy.
Personally I would have brought Hickey in, but Longer should match up well on McEvoy and will out-ruck him Ben can run all day though, but at least he is as slow as treacle.
I would suspect that Richo is also eyeing off wanting Longer to take on Mummy the week after in the GWS game as Hickey would probably go poorly against Mummy.

Yep - agreed. I still like Armo in the team but, not when he's injured. False economy.saintsRrising wrote:I agree. And the team picked this week is arguably our best team for the year, and best balanced.BigMart wrote: We are closer to best team imo

I've thought for a while the one-dimensional selection makes Richo only able to coach one-dimensionally. An example of this is Sinclair for Dunstan. Jack can run and run and has played full time midfield at Sandy for a year learning his craft. He's coming off the back of goals and 60+ touches in the 1st fortnight at VFL level. We already know he can kick goals at AFL level. Luke, on the other hand, doesn't get many possessions and has poor aerobic capacity and is slow. Average kick. Picking Sinclair means that both Sincs and Minch can run through the midfield as well as play small forward. Dunstan is midfield or bust.
And Koby's hardness and deceptive height around the footy is an excellent addition for us. I like the idea of him in our team for grunt purposes alone.
Looking forward to seeing how this line-up goes tomorrow - it's different if nothing else.
Go you red, black & white warriors

With Acres at 190, Stevens at 189 and Steele/Ross at 187 we now have four bigger players in the midfield rotation. Three can push forward to be marking targets too. Plus Gilbert can be thrown in there too.Saintmatt wrote: And Koby's hardness and deceptive height around the footy is an excellent addition for us. .
Stevens is quick, and I think Sinclair is quite nimble too. Jeoy can mix it up. And yes Gresham and Minch can also have stints through the midfield.
It makes for more variety.

I believe it derives trom giving someone an out from getting the chop.saintsRrising wrote:samuraisaint wrote:It's a modern Aussie colloquial term used in sports which just means to give someone respite.Con Gorozidis wrote:I have never quite understood this term.give Hickey a chop out

I am not so sure about that. As to get the chop, means to be sacked/dismissed.CQ SAINT wrote:

That was last year before the AFL muppets changed the ruck rules. Rooey et al were able to help third man up. This year Hickey has been outmuscled/ wrestled. Still much better around the ground but Billy this year may be a better match-up for Mummy in the ruck

Popular in the work place and a beautiful example of Australian colloquialism. It has found it way into everday urban life but not widespread.

Hi Con,Con Gorozidis wrote:I have never quite understood this term.give Hickey a chop out
it is quite easy really.
It dates from around the 1870's when Australia invented the BBQ.
You know the situation. Your fat mate is on his 6th sausage and his mouth is all covered in fat and black grease. He is into it and doesn't seem like stopping. Eyeing off another mystery meat in the corner away from the flames.
You do the right thing and give him the best and juiciest chop on the barbie. You give him "the chop out". He grins and eats the chop and is now full and stops his glutinous gorge. Thus saving him a heart attack and keeping him alive for his kids. Any real mate would do it.
There you go, Con. Happy to help.
Nothing better than a good Dad Joke.

It originated with us when Tom Lee was on the list and was being mentioned as a possible backup ruck.
