The ball bounced just inside the line but umpire #7 thought it was out on the full. Boundary umpire corrected him and proceeded with the throw in.Toy Saint wrote:There was an odd incident in front of me on the flank in the 3rd quarter (i think). The umpire also said he would review what was said and after that he would get back to Montagna.kosifantutti wrote:So you're telling us what you heard your mate heard Ling heard. I can't see that going wrong anywhere.
I'm pretty sure the umpire claimed that Joey had said "soft c"
The umpire didn't say he got it wrong. He said "if I got it wrong, I apologise"
I wonder if he has called Montagna and said "yes I got wrong, the game is over, it cost your team a goal plus a forward entry at a critical time, but I don't like you, so TOUGH".

If we had 80,000 members we would not be screwed over.
But as it stands we are more value to the AFL as the team that loses on Sunday afternoon.

No but the umpiring was bulls***.carn_sainter wrote:I agree with this. The rules are now such that the umpiring is in fact arbitrary. Impossible to enforce without gross unfairness and inconsistency.Freebird wrote:FFS what is going on - nobody knows the rules anymore - just let the 50/50s go
This weekend I seen a player come from behind (1 metre behind) to stand on the mark - ump says you can't come from behind and give him 50 metres. I knew for the rest of the weekend I would see this happen all the time without a 50-metre penalty. How do the players know what to do?
Overall though, as much as we got robbed a few time, we also got a few gifts. By no means did we lose by the whistle.

Agree Suss the frees balanced out in the end - we just didnt take advantage of ours.suss wrote:The Joey fifty was soft and Selwood as usual ducked his way to four or so free kicks but otherwise I thought it was okay. They got some soft ones but we got some cheapies too - like Bruce's push in the back 25 metres out from goal.
Our turnovers, shitful defending and missing midfield in the last quarter hurt way more.

What , do your reckon they don't bet on games when they can so easily determine the result? Of course they do. Or their family/friends on their behalf.
They have been doing it for years.
Re: Let's discuss umpires and cheating
Come on Curly, give it a break with the umpiring bit. Like many here I sometimes as p..o…with the umpiring as you are and in the past, I’m sure some games were lost because of them, but this one wasn’t one of them. There were certainly bad decisions, but they went both ways.
We lost for all the reasons which have already been discussed in various threads on this forum.

They are outcomes at specific times that can be influenced.
For example a free kick at the Centre bounce at the start of a quarter.
So what do we have so far......Umpires
- cheat against St Kilda at the bequest of the AFL
- because we don't have 80,000 members
- so their friends and family can bet against us even when we are not the favorite
Gee the Bulldogs stuck it up the AFL last year!

The romance of Leicester City and others - and the publicity that came with it.
Seduced the AFL - hence GWS shafted by the Umpires.
IF we list those who are very, very large punters, their affiliations to Clubs and the AFL you may just get a little closer.
These are the guys who settle their books at season's end - and, some years ago, a couple could not pay up causing problems.
They do not go to the TAB!!!
Never under estimate the power of money - and that it leads to corruption.

Re: Let's discuss umpires and cheating
I dont think the afl have much to do with it as there is too much goodwill at stake for them in a game which can be randomly umpired. Other sports have cheating due to the influence of betting and our game has to be wide open to this because when and where a free is paid is up to the umpires who can do this. Surely overseas betting syndicates looking for a sport that can be manipuled couldn't go past afl they dont need to involve players, only a small group of umpires.

What wonderful rhetoric and insight. To the top wrote: Never under estimate the power of money - and that it leads to corruption.
The power of money leads to corruption.
I'm sure you have taught us a valuable lesson.
OK, so we have big money and gamblers influencing games.
It would be a hell of a lot easier for gamblers to get to players that the AFL or umpires,
So how do you explain St Kilda's atrocious kicking from set shots? Surely a conspiracy theorist must see the link.
The saints can't kick from 30 out directly in front.
For the record I believe anyone who honestly thinks the AFL is instructing the umpires to cheat against St Kilda to ensure we lose is possibly drinking their own bong water. Nor do I believe players in this environment try to negatively influence results as the team structure and environmental would make it an extremely difficult task.

Re: Let's discuss umpires and cheating
I don't believe it's betting it's just favouritism. Umpires love to be part of the big clubs and the teams or players that are flavour of the month. In two of our five games this season the umpires have been talked about in the media both times we have copped it and costing us the game.
