Let's discuss umpires and cheating
We all saw it today why do we cop it again? It's cheating and it sits blatant at times. Cost us v WC nearly v Collingwood and today it was horrendous.

Re: Let's discuss umpires and cheating
An associate at the game had the ear phones in. When Montagna got done for the 50 (3rd?), which resulted in a goal, according to the associate, Ling stated they'd heard the recording of the umpire's reasoning for the 50, and it went something like this:
Montagna: 'That's a soft free kick'.
Umpire: 'That's 50'.
The associate is far from prone to embellishment.

Re: Let's discuss umpires and cheating
Actually the reply is on the AFL website and Joey said 'That's a soft bump' - The umpire apologised to Joey for getting it wrong but didn't cancel the 50m penalty. The OtherThommo wrote:An associate at the game had the ear phones in. So, the associate didn't embellish, MM.Mr Magic wrote:Actually the reply is on the AFL website and Joey said 'That's a soft bump' - The umpire apologised to Joey for getting it wrong but didn't cancel the 50m penalty. The OtherThommo wrote:An associate at the game had the ear phones in. The only word that counts is 'soft'.
The word that doesn't count is 'apology', obviously.

Re: Let's discuss umpires and cheating
So you're telling us what you heard your mate heard Ling heard. I can't see that going wrong anywhere.
I'm pretty sure the umpire claimed that Joey had said "soft c"
The umpire didn't say he got it wrong. He said "if I got it wrong, I apologise"

The deliberate oob, the rushed behind rule and most 50's are blights on what used to be our game. IMO, the sport is at its lowest ebb. Much like music and movies at the moment lol

This - Its a disgrace when ump blows his whistle and everyone waits to see how he's going to call it.stevie wrote:The deliberate oob, the rushed behind rule and most 50's are blights on what used to be our game. IMO, the sport is at its lowest ebb. Much like music and movies at the moment lol
FFS what is going on - nobody knows the rules anymore - just let the 50/50s go
This weekend I seen a player come from behind (1 metre behind) to stand on the mark - ump says you can't come from behind and give him 50 metres. I knew for the rest of the weekend I would see this happen all the time without a 50-metre penalty. How do the players know what to do?

Re: Let's discuss umpires and cheating
I agree with this. The rules are now such that the umpiring is in fact arbitrary. Impossible to enforce without gross unfairness and inconsistency.Freebird wrote:FFS what is going on - nobody knows the rules anymore - just let the 50/50s go

Overall though, as much as we got robbed a few time, we also got a few gifts. By no means did we lose by the whistle.

I'm still perplexed by that ump bringing the ball back to Gilbert and not letting the advantage rule to play after he delivered the ball perfectly to Rooey. The game was still in the balance then. That one really got stuck in my craw.

Perfect example of penalizing you by awarding a free kick.Sainternist wrote:I'm still perplexed by that ump bringing the ball back to Gilbert and not letting the advantage rule to play after he delivered the ball perfectly to Rooey. Re: Let's discuss umpires and cheating
check the betting odds posted prior to the game and then watch the umps adjudicate to maintain the status quo
If there's any discussion of cheating there needs to be a motive and good reason

Re: Let's discuss umpires and cheating
The Joey fifty was soft and Selwood as usual ducked his way to four or so free kicks but otherwise I thought it was okay. They got some soft ones but we got some cheapies too - like Bruce's push in the back 25 metres out from goal.
Our turnovers, shitful defending and missing midfield in the last quarter hurt way more.

Yep 13 down Roo marks 15 out very little angle and the umpire ignores the very basics of the rules and penalises us. It's called cheating.Sainternist wrote:I'm still perplexed by that ump bringing the ball back to Gilbert and not letting the advantage rule to play after he delivered the ball perfectly to Rooey. What about the one when Duckhead got cleaned up by a teammate and the filthy cheating prick still got a free kick!!!!

Re: Let's discuss umpires and cheating
i said to a Hawk mate the other day when discussing thier poor start that at least you have all those flags to savour. I'd be watching the 09 season dvd every week if we had've won that or the next year and i wouldn't ave given a tinker's tossbag if we never won another agme LOL. Another Hawk mate was spewing he never went to any of their 4 flags recently. Said he'll always regret thatprwilkinson wrote:Mate... Re: Let's discuss umpires and cheating
During warm-ups. Geelong were practicing throw-in setups. Boundary umpire comes over and assists them by throwing in for them for the session. When they finished it was all smiles and handshakes.
Saints then setup in almost the exact same spot. Umpires disappeared.
Maybe nothing but seems to speak volumes about the club's relationship with the umpiring fraternity.

Re: Let's discuss umpires and cheating
Umpire shmumpire. We lost due a pathetic performance in the last quarter of yesterday's game and the WCE game, not to mention a pathetic 2nd quarter against the Demons. Go take it out on the coach- he seems to be having problems getting his team to play four quarters, let alone getting his midfield to actually get the ball when the pressure is on and games are there to win.

So let me get this straight, the umpires deliberately cheat against St Kilda?CURLY wrote:We all saw it today why do we cop it again? It's cheating and it sits blatant at times. Cost us v WC nearly v Collingwood and today it was horrendous.
What is their reason and how do they benefit?
Simply ridiculous

Re: Let's discuss umpires and cheating
There was an odd incident in front of me on the flank in the 3rd quarter (i think). The ball went out of bounds and umpire #7 signaled delibeate (against Geelong), but the boundary umpire collected the ball and threw it in. Very puzzling.
Blatant umpire cheating is difficult to explain, there needs to be a motive. One motive is the betting odds, but I would have thought if they were going to cheat they'd favour the team with the better odds, Saints were $2.50 and Cats were $1.50 so my guess is that's not the case.
The second motive would be directions from headquarters for the commercial benefit of the AFL. Headquarters is obviously keen to see certain clubs do well as it helps the rating. There are reasons why they want Sydney especially, and the interstate teams, as well as the Melbourne teams with the powerfull supporter base to do well. After the doping saga I'm sure they'd like Essendon to do well. But it's difficult to undestand why they would favour Geelong against St Kilda.
The third reason is the 'small penis syndrome'. A lot of these umpires have big ego's and enjoy the power trip. How dare anybody question their decisions, and if we dare complain about poor treatment in Perth they will make us pay...just ask Adam Schnieder...question me...and you will pay...for the remainder of your career.
