Is Gresham trying too hard to do the spectacular?
Is Gresham trying too hard to do the spectacular?
Is it just me or is Gresham just trying too hard to be the flashy player?
ie that last dropped mark when I think he was trying too hard to play on, rather to mark the ball first?
He has talent no doubt. I just gained the impression today that he was too intent of trying to to do the spectaculat than the ordinary.
I would like too see him settle a bit and concentrate more of just winning the ball.

Re: Is Gresham trying too hard to do the spectacular?
Agree.
Couple of time he did an "Acres" and was planning his next move before gaining possession.
The smart sidesteps and showreel moves should be kept for situations where no conventional options are available.
In normal play we just need him to get the ball and hit a target.

the kid is a small forward. no place being near the midfield. if they want him there, develop him in the vfl. keep him where he belongs.

He's what a second year player that lacks composure at times... he likes to take the game on and fails at times. Meh I can live with it for now

Yeah fair call. Probably needed a bit more basics, I couldn't see how he dropped that mark, but the unreasonable attempt in the third is another example.
Got a fair amount of time in the centre square in the last while we were losing it... good opportunity. Didn't seem like we rotated many through to stem the flow but will see on the replay might be mistaken.
Re: Is Gresham trying too hard to do the spectacular?
Acres, Gresham, Dunsta, Ross attended a lot of Centre bounce until later in the quarter, when Jack went back in.
They were pumped by gun opponents
Gresham is a natural mid, but has not got the tank yet, so bursts only, and small forward

Had a bad game.
Not in good form.
I guess you can call it 2nd year blues.
Has potential and we all hope he works through it and emerges a better player

Re: Is Gresham trying too hard to do the spectacular?
Fresh doesn't look natural mid from here...too small and avoids physical contact
nothing to say
Re: Is Gresham trying too hard to do the spectacular?
He avoids tackles, something he's quite good at, and why he's going to be a good mid. Only one reason he isn't a full time mid right now.

He had a bad game. The coach will tell him why. He knows why anyway. He'll never try to take a pack mark over one of our tall forwards like that again.
We don't want to squash him because when those flashy things come off, they are brilliant.

He's a midfield gun. One of our few potential stars that will lift us to a flag in 2020.desertsaint wrote:the kid is a small forward. no place being near the midfield. if they want him there, develop him in the vfl. keep him where he belongs.

He actually had a terrible game. Cost us a couple of goals, but then so did Webster.SuperDuper wrote:Had a bad game.

And, when will someone tell the backs that dropped chest marks cost goals.
In the end we were beaten by a combination of a better side and the usual cheating maggots.
Re: Is Gresham trying too hard to do the spectacular?
I'm sure he must have got a talking to for trying to take a speccie, that was just silly and he has no place doing that. He's a ground player and should play to his strengths.
Next one is hard to judge seeing from tv but the incident where geelong turned it over going backwards and gresh got hold of it. While it would have been a spectacular goal the better thing to do would have been to use his evasiveness to hold it up and hit a target coming down the corridor. He turned towards boundary to kick with his right at goal, effectively turning his back on teammates. I have no doubts in his ability to hold up the defender there until our forwards streamed back inside 50.
His dropped mark was silly, definitely trying to use if before he had it, pretty sure Bruce or someone was coming the other way to mark it aswell.
Was unfortunate to slip trying to run out a clearance in the last quarter as well.
But all in all when I look at those, nothing there can't be coached out of him. He will learn and will be a better player for it. Better he learns now instead of somehow pulling it off now and then trying it in finals and failing.

Re: Is Gresham trying too hard to do the spectacular?
Will be in the top 10 midfielders in the league by 2020. Gresh is a star.
Need to be careful that his 'licence' to be creative isn't crushed. I think going for the special moment is important for players like him and teams.
Rioli, Betts, Wingard, they are team lifters and it is their ability to do something special that can spark their team, especially in the big games. He will keep our team 'interesting' which at the moment apart from Steven is full of drones...
Gresh is One of the few in the red, white and black that we can call elite in a couple of years....if anyone thinks otherwise you just don't know footy well enough.

Yes!
As ex-president Peter Summers said:

Holder of unacceptable views and other thought crimes.
Re: Is Gresham trying too hard to do the spectacular?
In an alternate universe there's a thread about how Gresham should stop playing it safe and start taking the game on.

Which is the point of my OP. I just think that he has become a little too seduced to try and do the flashy and so when against a well drilled team it comes unstuck too often.
It was a bit like Mileny for a period when virtually every time he marked he would go to play on and to kick at goal on the run. He knew it, but his opponents knew it and he became so predictable that they started nailing him every time. Milney got past it though.

Don't sweat it, he'll be back.
Hopefully he'll tear Hawthorn a new one on Saturday.
