Kicking for goal

Post: # 1661245Post repta »

Overall kicking for goal has been terrible across the board (most teams). But saints are doing truely terrible this year. If they kicked straighter they would have beaten West Coast, potentially shut out Melbourne early in the game. Then today.... left the door open.
Create a routine for kicking for goal.
Rules.
1. Dont go back 30m and run in 10m therefore kicking 20m further than necessary.
2. Head over the ball.
3.No bouncing around on the run in.
4. No leaning back on the kick.
5. Kick through the ball.

Not that hard. Many many players look terrified when they are having a shot. No practice = no confidence.

49.69 for the year to date.

Totally not up to standard.

Anyone got the stats for set shots because it seems like we're missing an absolute bucket load of these.

We will get pants next weekend by the cats and it won't necessarily be a bad thing. I don't know what it will take for Richo to get all the guys to kick 50 goals a training session before leaving. Today was woeful, it really was and it isn't one person it is everyone which makes me call in question the coaching and training of the goal kickers. Either Josh Battle gets fitter, bigger and stronger ASAP as his rep is a great kick at goal or we are going to lose games to lesser teams

We should be 3-1 if we could kick straight

I'd understand missing goals if we were still playing suburban grounds or even the G, if its a howling wind, but under a roof, perfect conditions with a set shot, to miss them anywhere under 30 meters, bar close or against the boundry line, is pretty much unacceptable. They are paid professionals. Its the most important part of the game FFS!!. I dont understand how everything in the game has improved, skills wise, yet kicking for goal, across the whole competition, is still so bad. It has to be a mental thing because on the warm up they don't look like missing.

Dunstan turns sideways during his run up. Surely we have coaches who can square him up.

Not acceptable in today's game!

Good call. You can only hope these guys are drilled in sound fundamentals like these.

To them I'd add aim for the smallest possible target ... land it on the head of the guy in the red cap in row 7, for example.

Pressure plays terrible tricks on the mind and you need solid fundamentals to fall back on.

Yeah he had a really weird set shot in the second half where he kicked sideways, despite not even really being on an angle.

Top 6
77.43
69.49
62.43
62.41
60.38
60.35

....and Geelong...

....Wait for it....

.....55.19....

I had to double check that because I couldnt believe it. 55.19! FFS.

If we kicked straight we would be top 4. No two ways about it.

Yep, it's importance cannot be underestimated yet they clearly don't do a lot of work on it. I assume that's all shots, not set shots Con?

Damning stats.

We are by far the most inaccurate. By far.

Gls. Bhds. listed in brackets next to the "For" column.

And yet, of the teams who've played four games only GWS and Adelaide with more scoring shots than us. About 10 more each.

It really is an issue.

Should have done WCE by six to eight goals.
Should have done Brisbane by more.
Should have done the filth by at least eight.

Should be 3-1 if not for our terrible conversion.

Billings career so far = 29.39.

If he was 39.29 wed all be saying he was a gun.

Yep. All scores. Adelaide and Geelong absolute dead eyes.

Doesnt count out on full or the one that drives me nuts - the kick to the goal line that is touched over aka 'rushed'.
What is the point of that kick? If you cant make the distance - then try and pass it or least give someone a chance. Drives me nuts!

All players should be given homework to study youtube clips of Lockett's and Dunstall's kicking style.
From what i can see todays players stand way to upright. The top goal kickers bent over the ball, keeping their head way over the ball.

Carl Ditterich's ball drop actually tossed the ball upwards. He only kicked goals by accident.
Lockett's ball drop was so low he almost kicked it out of his hands.

The shorter the distance between hands and foot the less chance there is for the ball to deviate from the perfect strike point.
Head over the ball, no movement of the arms or hands as you run in, get the strike point perfect.

Change people's natural kicking style... hmm that's not going to f*** with their head is it?! Under pressure....

Anyone here play golf??

Skill acquisition takes more than 150 hrs, 10 000 reps to become autonomous .... it can't happen in season.

And when telling people how to complete a skill, or all coaching for that matter

Never say what NOT to do...

Just what they should do

It's the golden rule of coaching

I draw a strong parallel between set-shot kicking for goal and putting.

You've got to hit a target, sometimes under extreme pressure. Missing can be the difference between winning and losing but in the case of football you are letting down an entire team rather than just yourself.

Sound fundamentals and identifying and ironing out common problems cannot be a bad thing and doesn't change any player's innate ability.

But of course you already know this as I hear you are a single figures player

Get Peter Hudson to do some goal kicking skills with the boys. If he could sort Buckets out, he can fix anyone.

Rugby League would have to be the stupidest, most moronic and over rated game of all time.
