Where is Riewoldt amoungst our all time greats?
Baldock was mecurial, a modern day rovers build who played CHF aften with several opponents, captain of our only premership team
Ian Stewart, a champion, 3 Brownlows, but only two at St Kilda
Tony Lockett, superstar, champion goal kicker, Brownlow medal, but finished in Sydney
Robert Harvey, 2 Brownlows, record games
Nick Riewoldt, multiple club B&F's, tough loyal champion, longest serving captain
It's a bit like asking who is your favourite child, but for me Roo is getting close to Plugger as our best ever.

Good question.
Best ever.
Aside from the fact he let 'us' down in successive GF's.
Granted there were reasons in 09 - but unfortunately it is, what it is.

Re: Where is Riewoldt amoungst our all time greats?
3rd IMO
Only #35
- 8 x AA
- 4 x B&F
- 383 games
- 2 x Brownlow
- 208 Brownlow votes
And #4
- 10 x Goal Kicking
- 2 x B&F
- 3 x AA
- Brownlow
He's done far more than Stewart (127 games) and Baldock (119 games)
Seriously, he's won almost as many B&Fs as seasons they played
What is incredible is that he is an AFL sides best player for 15 years
It's not unusual for a player to play for 15+ years, and probably be the best player at his club for half that... but 15 years
He was possibly the best in 2002, definitely in 2004 at 20-22
Arguably still the best at 34

Lockett
Roo
Harvey
They are the best I have seen.
Never seen Baldock or Stewart play.
Locektt is the best player I have ever seen, even amongst other teams.
My top 3 would be
Lockett
D. Jarman
W. Carey
Roo
Harvey

I reckon he is number one.

He wasn't our worst - but 2 goals and 3 misses just isn't good enough.SaintPav wrote:I thought his GF in 2010 was good. He nearly won us the game.Johnny Member wrote:Good question.

Re: Where is Riewoldt amoungst our all time greats?
I had this chat with my Dad quite a few times, before he passed away. He worked for the Club and just about saw every home game from the late 1940's to about 2000 ish.
He always said it was tough to choose between Baldock and Lockett. Both could win you a game almost single handedly. He also thought Harvey and Hayes were way up there. People tend to forget Trevor Barker - I put him in the upper areas in the list of our greats. Week in, week out he took on the toughest assignment on the field and rarely let us down - bled red, white and black. Dad just loved Roo as well, he was up there with the greatest that our club produced, and still is our stand out performer. Dad also loved Big Carl - said Carl's first game was the best he had ever seen a first gamer produce. Dad always reckoned our players played taller when Carl was on the ground - the little blokes were looked after and if there was any rough stuff you could guarantee retribution. I guess it's hard to rank them in a list as the game has changed so much, but for what it's worth, there is my 2 bobs worth.

Rugby League would have to be the stupidest, most moronic and over rated game of all time.

I think Lockett was the best player to play the game and he never was really fit and totally committed.
He could have been even better!

In Springfield, they're eating the dogs. The people that came in, they're eating the cats. They’re eating – they are eating the pets of the people that live there.

Re: Where is Riewoldt amoungst our all time greats?
There's 2 questions here.....
Where does he rank in the best players for St Kilda: Probably only top 5, I'd have Lockett, Harvey and Baldock ahead of him. Stewart and Roo can toss for 4th and 5th.
Where does he rank as the greatest Saint: Right near the top, possibly best ever. His leadership, his loyalty, the impact on the culture of the club, and to be the figurehead thru probably our most successful era, who knows what shape the club would be in now if Roo had never come along. The money and the offers that must have come for him, especially when the Gold Coast were ramping up, must have been massive, and he stayed when nobody in the footy world would have blamed him if he'd walked out.
I hope in 20/50/100 years time we look back on the Roo era as the turning point where the Saints went from perennial basketcase to successful professional outfit. As great as Harvs was, or Barks, or Doc, I don't feel like they have left the legacy that Roo ultimately will. Barker maybe, but nobody else.

If it judges as the best every player for St.kilda...loyalty, commitment and passion for the club has to be a part of the decision.
Plugger.....amazing player but not a life long saint.
Roo
Harvey

The Greatest!
Old enough to repaint, but young enough to sell
Re: Where is Riewoldt amoungst our all time greats?
Must be closing in on #1, a few more 28d 12m 3goal games. How much more can you do than that!
