"THE LOPSIDED free kick count in the West Coast-St Kilda clash has been given the tick of approval from the AFL.
The Saints were on the wrong end of the 23-8 differential, and it led to calls that Perth teams continually get the rub of green when playing at Domain Stadium.
St Kilda coach Alan Richardson refused to blame the disparity for his side's 19-point loss.
Umpires coach Hayden Kennedy told AFL.com.au's Whistleblowers program that a through review of the game revealed it was officiated in a satisfactory manner.
"Yes, we were (happy with the umpiring standard)," Kennedy said.
"Every Monday we go through the games (and) the free kick count to us is irrelevant.
"This game was no different to what we normally go through, and especially in regard to the amount of errors contained with in it.
"My ears pricked up over the weekend, as the umpires coach, because I know whenever there's a difference in the free kick count there's usually media-driven conversation based on it.

Re: Free kick count Approved
This is a classic case of confirmation bias.
The 'review' would only be meaningful if it was conducted by an independent panel.
The issue is the umps wont pay a free to an away side versus the Eagles because they dont want to be 'booed'.
Every free for gets them a cheer and every one against a boo.
So they respond because they want to be loved.
The issue is all the ones not paid to away teams that are there rather than simply reviewing the frees paid.
Utter self serving garbage.

Never forget that umpire bias extends beyond free kicks to such things as what constitutes a mark,
what constitutes a touched ball, and and what constitutes "out of bounds" (a particularly notorious
one at Subiaco).

Re: Free kick count Approved
No Surprise there.
This is the same organisation who did their own review on Essendon/ ASADA and determined they did a good job, Fined a club $500,000 for not tanking and buried the only independent report presented to them regarding Eagles drug use. Of course the umpires were correct, heaven forbid they acknowledge that something they control is not perfect. Feel like we are all a part of the Trueman show sometimes

Not surprised the umpires did exactly as they are asked which is to keep West Coast in the game.

Did anyone expect a different outcome? Perhaps the afl needs to be reminded of where their money comes from rather from a totally self biased decision.

Re: Free kick count Approved
People screaming about the count, doesn't help.
It gives liars and cheats the opening to say stuff like
"My ears pricked up over the weekend, as the umpires coach, because I know whenever there's a difference in the free kick count there's usually media-driven conversation based on it."
It gives the crooks a way out.

The count is a problem when in a hot contest a team hasn't got a free kick in 48 mins of football

Re: Free kick count Approved
it is what is not said that gives the game away - a Satiisfactory performance with no more errors than normal but does not say that the errors were equally distributed. That would clearly be a lie and even more laughable than the quisling response provided.
it is no more culpable than the various media types who fail to hold the umps to account.

Re: Free kick count Approved
The bias towards West Coast at their own dung hill for the last 5 or 10 years (or maybe ever since they joined the comp?) is out of control. The free kick count is so skewed their way that surely it isn't just the rub of the green.
As ex-president Peter Summers said:
“If we are going to be a contender, we may as well plan to win the bloody thing.”
St Kilda - At least we have a Crest!

The review is like Kim Jong Un having an election or popularity survey and getting 100% support. Or giving himself 100% for his own performance.
AFL umpires 'self review' has similar credibility.
They honestly take us for fools.

I complained about a copper once through a channel I thought sounded quite above board - the police integrity unit. I got a call a week later from the copper's boss who was the Seargant at the station where she worked. He told me that she was an upright and outstanding person and that they'd worked together for over 15 years. I thought...jesus I'm f***ed!! They had my address so I thought it best that I leave it alone

Re: Free kick count Approved
There's a lot of excuses for disparity in free kicks, and nothing arguments like 'free kicks don't have to be equal.
So what do you do? You analyze stats over all clubs, over a long time period - so personnel change, game plans change, and team success changes. Then check for trends and outliers.
So here we go: u fortunately our stupid site won't allow image size control so these were enormous - instead i'll paste the link.

Re: Free kick count Approved
What about these examples?
The free kick paid against Steven for deliberate out of bounds when tackled right on the boundary and the non-decision for Gaff's kick out of bounds
Push in the back to Hill paid vs non decision for Kennedy pushing Brown in the back
A goal review prompted by crowd reaction and goal disallowed despite there being no conclusive evidence
West Coast ruckman caught with the ball, dropping it and receiving a free
Unbelievable.
