They're pretty gutted. Gave everything. Thought the Gameplan and coaching deserved a tick. Will wait till the review to decide if a chat with umpiring is needed. Jack S is not well. If anyone here doesn't think that the players didn't give 100% you don't deserve to call yourself a supporter. They're hurting as much if not more than you.
Keep the faith.

Effort was bloody immense. They were lunatics out there. No question about that. 22 lunatics with no regard for their safety.

Agree as I have already posted elsewhere, effort, gameplan etc were all very good.

We just lacked a bit of polish at times.

Let's hope Jack S is not out too long,

Agree that composure let us down, no doubt aggravated by the ludicrous free kick count.

You get pinged if you touch them. Thrice the number of kicks FFS. We must be tackling them too roughly.

Perhaps the umpires, if we decide to approach them, can give some tips on the correct tackling technique and where we are going wrong.

Thanks Tony. They tried their guts out. That was obvious. Effort was awesome.

The rest will come.

We have faith.

Devastated to hear about Jack. Pretty hard to be a game winning onfield leader with a punctured lung. But he kept going anyway.

Big ticks for me, tony. Always appreciate your input. We turned up to play and played without a lapse in effort, always kept punching back and responding in very adverse conditions (crowd, ground, umps) until we simply ran out of legs.

Very brave and gutsy effort for as long as there was gas in the tank. Near manic pressure and willingness to get involved. Besides the last 15 minutes, it really was a full 4 quarter effort. So 3 and a half, I guess.

The skills were way too sloppy though. Missed shots on goal hurt, but we also killed our own transition several times with terrible skills. Missed field passes of 30m, not hitting guys on the lead, turning our possession and fast ball movement into a throw-in, stoppage or eagle possession. That's what really hurt us. We butchered a lot of shots on goal but could have had about 10-12 more as well.

It wasn't all bad. We did switch the ball well and choose good patterns and speed of ball movement, but the disposal killed us as much as the umps did.

And the umpiring was awful. At least 3 goals to the eagles on very, very soft and dubious calls. It's not the raw count of frees for and against that annoys me, it's the imbalance of what is called, where, and the cost of them.

They played awesomely considering, they just kicked too many behinds but the umpiring was a f**king disgrace Tony. Umpiring like that would cause a riot in some other sports.

Tony,

They are expected to give 100%

Why would that be in question? Do they ever not??

These guys get paid from 90-700k to play footy, they train for 10 months a year, 3-5 days a week. They are elite athletes, they are coached by elite coaches.

They played well, yes!

But to say they gave 100% is folly, it's a given.

All they did not do was execute, to capitalise on their clearance dominance.

It is going to be a new look St. Kilda outfit which takes on Brisbane next Sunday.
Riewoldt - knee
Dempster - concussion
Armitage - groin
Steven - punctured lung
Stevens - gastro (lost 7 kilos apparently)

Reckon we could use Longer in the ruck this week to compliment Hickey - and let Hickey rest up forward as another tall forward marking option. Playing Bruce in the ruck is not the answer.
Bring Long in to replace Steven in the midfield.

Long and Longer!

Ok heros you play in Perth against 22 plus 3 maggots and a hostile uneducated crowd of morons in 29 degree heat for the whole first half and sun and see how you fare?

The effort was there almost the whole game.

They could've slowed down in the third due to heat exhaustion/being spent early but the boys found a second, third and fourth wind and kept battling under adversity.

To have so many scoring shots in Perth is incredible. That's a massive positive and something that can set up our season even though we are 0-2.

Unfortunately, Brisbane appear to have improved a fair bit and are unlikely to be easy beats next week but we will win and win comfortably.

Great effort but just worries me how much we rely on that effort and supportive runs to keep chaining the ball. We look great when we are doing that, but in the last qtr WC locked us in with a hard press and we didn't have the skill to work it out. It's hard to play at that incredible effort every week - after last week they obviously want to atone and so are highly revved up. It's more you want to be at 95% with a good system and skills to get it done that lets you really wind up when you need to. 0

Definitely a good bounce back after being flat last week. But like last week it doesn't define our season. How do we go against Brissy - no gimme anymore - and Collingwood desperate to get wins. WE'll have a bit more of an idea of our form and depth after that.

Two ruck men next week please.

Rugby League would have to be the stupidest, most moronic and over rated game of all time.

Great effort by the boys and the coaches.

What a difference from last week, inspirational stuff..

We ran out of steam in the end. So do we get fitter or slow it down for a couple of minutes each quarter?

Not execute?

Of course they didn't execute. They're professional athletes, for you two say that it's obvious that they gave/give a hundred percent is obvious.

Is it nt obvious?

People make such grandiose statements sometimes...

Do you know why they didn't execute..

The boys played ok, but they'll need to do better.

Gresham is not a star.

It doesn't even need to be said

I don't even need to be saying this right now

sorry just felt like trying out a different posting style.

It didn't feel good

I'm glad I can actually enjoy footy.

Great effort by the boys, it would be nice to win those ones but the signs are good, and they've bought into the gameplan, which I worried about after last week.

The 4 reasons we lost;

1. Sloppy kicking, both in field and for goal
2. Fumbling the ball.
3. Dropped marks in the backline.
4. Cheating umpire maggots.

Dunno about that. Melbourne's skills are a class above those of the Weagles.

The thing about being skillful - eg being able to hit a target or take a mark - is that you don't have to waste energy trying to do it all again through the retrieval process. We saw that last week with the Dees. Once they got possession, they kept it with minimal effort. Of course, a zone defence system plays into the hands of a team who can dispose of the ball with either foot with precision. The Weagles were poor at getting the ball in the first two quarters - allowing the umps to their work for them. It's the frees we don't get that hurt with players thrown from the contest , pushed in the back or grabbed to prevent run. Not so with the Weagles. Shuey and Gaff started to get clearances as Hickey tired which got them back in the game. But was only in the last 15 minutes that they were able to use the ball with efficiency going forward.

Absolutely. Our sometimes poor skill levels did not help, but neither did those little fluorescent cretins.

looking at the stats WC duckers had 9 players with more than 20 possessions. We had 3. 422 disposals to 361 in the end. We spent a lot of petrol tickets chasing and harassing.

We killed them with our direct ball movement early. But they started getting it first and holding it better to share it around and get players involved and keep their energy.

Agree. This is the AFL. Most sides bring effort. But effort alone isnt enough. You also need skill and brains.
Poor kicking is our major downfall. Has been for years now.
