Re: Rumour on AW that Paddy is out
Can anyone explain the logic behind this?
Lonie is a little boy. Doesn't get much of the ball. For all his "pressure" his tackles rarely stick. He can't go through the middle & at this stage is the very definition of a one trick pony.
Acres is a line breaker/game changer. Can go through the middle or take a mark up forward.
At least if he plays, we can rotate the likes of Billings/Dunstan/Steven/Ross and Acres through the forward line and middle.
Don't get the Lonie love.

Re: Rumour on AW that Paddy is out
strange change to me - a small forward for a tall forward. thought they should put acres in the midfield and roo chf.
well lonie has the chance to quieten the doubters. good luck to him.

Re: Rumour on AW that Paddy is out
It's not exactly like for like.
Likely this means Roo plays forward so I would have thought a big bodied kid would be preferable to a forward crumber who has played 1 good preseason game in a year.
Certainly has nothing on Acres as a mid. I guess it means someone like Billings/Gresh plays as a permanent mid.
Good luck to Lonie but I hate the move.
I hope to be proven wrong.

Blacres on the outer. Bewildering selection, unless Lonie was next in the queue, regardless of team balance.
I started with nothing and I've got most of it left!

Re: Rumour on AW that Paddy is out
A 3 tall forward line will trouble most sides. With Paddy out I would move Roo to high half forward and bring someone in who can play wing HFF/HBF and/or run through the middle. Will really p155 me off if our forward line doesn't fire and Roo spends the game on the wing.
Lonie for Gresh or Wright is understandable, but for Paddy , seems odd.

Re: Rumour on AW that Paddy is out
Lonie will have 10 touches, a few tackles and maybe a goal or too if he's lucky.
That's a good game from Lonie.
A bad game from Lonie is less than 5 touches and no impact.
Blake could have 25 and kick a couple.
At worst he might have 10-15 and lack "intensity"
Blakes worst game is on par with Lonies best.
What the F Richo

Re: Rumour on AW that Paddy is out
Well its not the logical move, but Melbourne are supposed to of gone for more run to combat our running game at Etihad. Swapping Lonie for a tall. Perhaps they think Lonie offers more in this department than Acres.

LATE CHANGES
St Kilda: Paddy McCartin (managed) replaced in the selected side by Jack Lonie
Melbourne: Nil
FINAL INTERCHANGES
Managed in round one
Perfect change. Infact i believe this while selection has been a ploy. Lonie will dominate to bruce membrey and reiwoldt.

No wonder all you guys arent on selection committee. Thank god you arent.
No idea.
Lonie is the perfect choice. Acres is just another mid we dont need. Lonie is the defensive forward crumber qe need especially on etihad. Lonie will doninate today. And all of you need to think about things a little more. Acres 25 possies?? How he would just get in the way of steele ross dunstan steven savage billings. Ffs.

We already have Gresham and Wright to be small forwardsSMS wrote:You have no idea. None.Impatient Sainter wrote:Worst change ever hope it doesnt cost the game...dragit wrote:St Kilda v Melbourne at Etihad Stadium, 4.35pm AEDT

Re: Rumour on AW that Paddy is out
I would have looked to replace strength with strength. Lonie doesn't really have the tackling strength to slow a strong half back running out of defence..still not sure what his strengths are?

Re: Rumour on AW that Paddy is out
Is 'managed' interesting or is it stock standard nowadays not to list an injury (if he did indeed do a hammy). I thought late changes to the team sheet needed to be justified to the AFL, and not sure how managed says enough.

Re: Rumour on AW that Paddy is out
The real change then structurally is Roo to play key forward along with Bruce.
Perversely given Paddys recent form this probably increases our change of winning.

Re: Rumour on AW that Paddy is out
So 10 possessions of a small forward is equivalent to a mid getting 15
Yeah, you know you're footy
It's like when nuffies say that Lonie, Sinclair, Minch, or when it was Eli
That they cannot make the step to AFL their numbers are nothing like their VFL numbers
Reality is, they just play a different position when they are promoted

Re: Rumour on AW that Paddy is out
You're delusion if you think Lonie will "dominate". LOL. We will win regardless if he plays or not or if 8cres plays or not. Lonie just won't make it and we already have small forwards who are faster and stronger in the team or in the wings that Lonie. So why we need another small I don't know.SMS wrote:You have no idea. As ex-president Peter Summers said:

Name a good club with a stay-at-home small forward other than the Crows.
It doesn't happen anymore. You have mids rotate through there, they do the same job.. usually better.

There's no issue with you rating Lonie higher or backing him in. None.
But based purely on what we've seen, this is a baffling decision. Acres has been a lot better at both AFL and VFL level.
You have a hunch, Richo has a hunch... fine.
But it's not a clear, comprehensively correct decision

Like to rethink that. Lonie has been a disaster. That selection may have lost the game.SMS wrote:No wonder all you guys arent on selection committee. Thank god you arent.

Re: Rumour on AW that Paddy is out
I doubt it cost us the game... but the balance was all wrong. What we needed was someone to move the ball through if Roo stays forward. What we picked was a crumber type that is dependent on us already having won the ball

That selection may have lost the game.
Rubbish. About 90% of our players were abysmal today failing to put in enough effort and with dreadful skills.
How often did we handball as feet! How often did the players allow Demons unguarded space. Overhall we were dreadful and no one play would have made a difference. Lonie was just one of the majority of StKilda players who did not turn up to play today.
Having said that Lonie is just was too slow fora small forward. Several times he was 10m in the clear but still got caught!
