An underrated champion. Best Midfielder in the 90's. 8 x AA pretty much says it all there.

Looks more like Paul Kelly (singer) than Tony!
Would have walked straight past him in the street and not noticed.

Lost about 40 kgs to become more competitive in his new sport of motorcycling. Trail and cross country stuff, I believe.

Imagine how many he would've kicked if he'd been as dedicated to his fitness when he was playing as he is now.

A skinny plugger in his playing days in the 80's/90's era wouldn't have been as effective as the monster he was.

Re: Happy 51st Birthday to Plugger!
I remember walking out of the MCG one night after we had been given a hiding by North - 1990 I think - and Lockett had just returned from a suspension. A carload of guys driving up Punt Rd stuck their heads out the car windows and asked me "How many did Lockett kick?" Not who won? But; how many did Lockett kick? He really was phenomenal. In the offseason at the beginning of 1991 I saw him at the Dava Hotel in Mt. Martha. One of my mates asked him if he wanted to meet a fanatical St. Kilda supporter - he said yes and grogged on with us until late in the night - I remember he was drinking jugs of midori. My friend was English and he was giving him grief about England's capitulation in the cricket that day. I actually brought up that Melbourne game with him during the evening's festivities and he was very modest, saying 'Oh, that was years ago now' or something similar.
Your friendly neighbourhood samurai.

Re: Happy 51st Birthday to Plugger!
Not as skinny as he is now, sp, just 10-15 kgs lighter so he could still run out of the goalsquare in the second half of games. He kicked 80 % of his goals in the first half. Imagine if he had been leading hard and running until the end. Would've been awesome. Regularly played at over 120 kgs by his own admission. At 105-110 he would've been as strong and much fitter aerobically.saintspremiers wrote:A skinny plugger in his playing days in the 80's/90's era wouldn't have been as effective as the monster he was.

Re: Happy 51st Birthday to Plugger!
It's an interesting exercise to think how he'd go in today's game. It's true there would be more players back around him because of the increased rotations. On the other hand, some of the rules would work in his favour and he'd play half his games under a roof.saintspremiers wrote:A skinny plugger in his playing days in the 80's/90's era wouldn't have been as effective as the monster he was.

My educated guess is that he would be a champion in any era, such was his football ability.

He looks very fit to me. Walking those greyhounds is probably paying off.saintbrat wrote:has he been unwell? or to jenny CRaig
Plus he has been racing dirtbikes and so extra mass would be a disadvantage in that sport.

It's just crap that post of those so called footy experts only rated him 4th best footballer the other day.
Easily the best in the past 50 years, imho.

Yep. As I said earlier, Matthews, who they rated No. 1, was a very similar type to Lockett. Immensely strong. Aggressive. Highly skilled. And absolutely lethal near the goals.
He was sort of a mini-me Plugger. The Shetland pony version.
They've pigeon holed him as a full forward rather than looking at the complete footballer. Also, that he didn't play in premiership teams counts against him. It shouldn't, but inevitably it does.

Re: Happy 51st Birthday to Plugger!
How good does he look!
I still reckon he would have been a monster if he played at that weight...
He was a gifted footballer....if he had of been fitter, he could have played CHF...or similar.
That weight loss is recent too... he was twice that weight at the HOF.

He doesn't look healthy
In Springfield, they're eating the dogs. The people that came in, they're eating the cats. They’re eating – they are eating the pets of the people that live there.
