Re: Better team and coach than 2010
Missing from those listed 2009/10 players is one Sam Fisher, one of the great defenders in our history.
Then there was Michael Gardiner, who gave excellent service to the Club.
We had some excellent players thru that period no doubt but, IMO there was too much of a Riewoldt focus (to the detriment of Koschitzke) and our bottom half dozen were just too many to carry on the biggest stage.
Hopefully those lessons have been learned - and I suspect they have.
You would trust that every player running onto the ground for the final game of the year would have a BOG in their kit.
So, if our star players are shut down as likely happens, someone else bobs up.

Re: Better team and coach than 2010
Just to add, we lacked pace hence Peake and the attempt to get the guy from Essendon.
Gram was probably the quickest player we had (and he was quick) - and had the disposal to maximise hence the goals he kicked as a defender.
We had no-one else who was quick - hence, also, our lack of defensive pressure and sides like Essendon doing to us what they did at that time.
Great players, but not the right ingredients.
Hence the hope for Freeman now to assist Steven.
And why the pace of Wright catches attention.

Re: Better team and coach than 2010
Spot on TTT.
I remember one game vs Essendon at the Docklands, back in 2010 - there were 2 Essendon players with express pace - maybe Davey and Lovett? -- who were positioned in open space, right next to each other - somewhere between the centre square and half forward - and they were just waiting for the long ball to be kicked their way.
We had no answer to it.
They kept pouncing on the long, loose ball and running it deep into their forward line, time and time again.
We couldn't lay a tackle on them.
They did as they pleased. It was so frustrating to watch.
Our team stats showed we had 100 more possessions around the ground - but their 30 or so possessions did all the damage, and Essendon won running away.
Ross Lyon had no answer for it - they were just too quick for us. Some clever coaching by Essendon and those 2 players did all the damage.

Re: Better team and coach than 2010
that's some powerful kool aid in the water round melbourne way. i'm all for confidence in the team, but suddenly a team hoping to fight it's way into the eight is on par with probably the best ever team not to win a flag? Eight AAs in that team. we have three of them, all well in their twilight and only one close to it. It's a bit of an insult to that team, and a delusion with no chance to see fruition this year.

I don't think anyone's denying the top end talent of that team.desertsaint wrote:that's some powerful kool aid in the water round melbourne way. i'm all for confidence in the team, but suddenly a team hoping to fight it's way into the eight is on par with probably the best ever team not to win a flag? Re: Better team and coach than 2010
Exactly right DS. People seem to forget that in 2010 we had the best player in the competition (Roo) who missed half the year through injury, but had the ability to still make a GF but draw it. Not only do we not have the best player in the competition this year but we probably don't have a player in the top 15. Would only have 2 players in the top 40, and one of those is 34 yrs old!.desertsaint wrote:that's some powerful kool aid in the water round melbourne way. i'm all for confidence in the team, but suddenly a team hoping to fight it's way into the eight is on par with probably the best ever team not to win a flag? We simply don't have the star quality yet in this lineup. Depth may well win you flags but it's your stars who get you there

Re: Better team and coach than 2010
Well let's see what this year brings..players will stand tall during a season which will define their standing in the game. It's early days with this team, it has the potential to surpass...and we haven't one a premiership. For a while so we can't really rate the 09 ..010 team as great.

Re: Better team and coach than 2010
In 2016 the number of players who polled Brownlow Medal votes increased significantly as did the votes won by St Kilda players
I noted at the time that this achievement was significant in terms of the direction for the immediate and long term future
What we look for in 2017 is for that trend to continue and for those performances to lead team success
Once St Kilda players are being acknowledged in that way perceptions of the abilities of our players will change - and we trust 2016 was the commencement of the recognition that we have a very talented list of players maturing into fine footballers
We are transitioning - as the team of 2009/2010 transitioned (despite losing the likes of Maguire and others who had their careers derailed)
In terms of 2017 I really think that this season is as open as any season has been and except for possibly a couple of Clubs anyone could get on a role at the right time of the season as WB did in 2016
Mind you there is GWS!!

If this team can start the season like the 2009/2010 team I will be happy!

Agree. Powerful expectations come before disappointment. If we hit a rough patch, the chorus of expectation could turn to a shrill of AR bashing, among others.desertsaint wrote:that's some powerful kool aid in the water round melbourne way. i'm all for confidence in the team, but suddenly a team hoping to fight it's way into the eight is on par with probably the best ever team not to win a flag? We have a team with a lot of guys still developing and finding their feet at AFL level. Patience.
Re: Better team and coach than 2010
Wish you'd stop with the excuses before we've even played one game Bryon. Every single team has "guys still developing". Richo's fourth year, 6 years of a rebuild and Richo inherieted some good players. This is his squad now with experience and talent. Time to show what he can do.st.byron wrote:Agree. I suppose we had more stars in 2010 but if you look at the total list of players we had a lot of duds too. Compare the 2 lists below

I once spent a year in Adelaide, I think it was on a Sunday.

Re: Better team and coach than 2010
That would require winning the flag this year, but I think we will be battling it out for a spot in the eight.linz wrote:I think the 2017 list has an upside which could surpass the 2010 list by the end of the year.

Not necessarily, other teams might improve even more but I think we may surprise and not be far away. At least I hope so.dragit wrote:That would require winning the flag this year, but I think we will be battling it out for a spot in the eight.linz wrote:I think the 2017 list has an upside which could surpass the 2010 list by the end of the year.

I hope you're right, but the 2010 side drew a GF, so to surpass that would require winning one.linz wrote:Not necessarily, other teams might improve even more but I think we may surprise and not be far away. Re: Better team and coach than 2010
There is little doubt we are placed better for a decade of success and multiple grand final wins than we have ever been. Better depth in the squad over a wider spread of ages, better coaching staff and better administration.
3 flags by 2024 looks very plausible. Im not discounting 2017 just yet because of the bulldogs last year and our rapid improvement last year. If we continue as we left off we are going to play finals and there is no reason, if we make it, that we cant win it.

Re: Better team and coach than 2010
Surely we jest?!
All Austs in the 09/10 teams
Nick x 5, Lenny x 3, Joey x 2, BJ x 2, Milne x 2, Dal Santo x 2, Ball, Fisher, Gardiner
9 players who at some stage or stages in their career were the best players in their position in the afl
We went 19/3 in 2009 for a reason - over half a team with elite talent
It could also be argued that
Baker was a top shut down back pocket
Jones was the best tagged going around
Gram was a dangerous running half back
Schneider was a dangerous HF
And then
King was a proper back up ruckman
Kosi was a serviceable marking fwd
Mini played a very good role as a defensive small forward
We had a crack team
This team has Nick
Jack Steven is a gun, but reality is that our best player (albeit underrated) has never been an AA and would only be a top 40 player.

Re: Better team and coach than 2010
It's impossible to compare teams across different periods as you also need to take account the opposition.
We were a worthy GF opponent. Probably better than a few winners.
While it's obviously impossible to prove, in my opinion we had superior teams than the 04 to 06 winners.
We were very unlucky.
I will leave it at that.

Re: Better team and coach than 2010
Yeah our 09 team in most other years would win the GF comfortably. Wet toast and Shitney of 05/06 were, IMO, the 2 'worst' ever flag winners of recent times, until the Bullfrogs last year.SaintPav wrote:It's impossible to compare teams across different periods as you also need to take account the opposition.

The 09 team would've won every flag since 09 if that makes sense. Hawthorn of 2014 may have kept up for a half but thats about it.

Yeah, 04 to 06 just had a horrid run with injury. At full strength that team could easily go toe to toe with any teamSaintPav wrote:It's impossible to compare teams across different periods as you also need to take account the opposition.
