I didnt think there would be anything worse than watching the filth play the blue baggers.
But then the AFL came up with a filth v blue baggers match played by women.
Oh well, each to their own.

At this stage, it's hard to disagree. Another example, in this political climate, that everything women do is extraordinary and everything men do is shyte. The AFL rolled this out so that it can generate more money, not sure the state government have done too much other than support the initiative

Cmon the skill is sensational. Seems like you need to have a sleeve, neck or leg tattoo to get a game.

Re: AFLW first game - Carlton V Collingwood
I watched the better part of two games and I must say that the intensity and endeavour was amazing. The women had a fair dinkum crack and really enjoyed it.
Before I go on, we must address the elephant in the room.
The skills were, for the most part, terrible. Players were passing the ball from 35m-40m out from goal because they couldn't make the distance. Kicks were going out on the full from a free kick 5-10m inside the boundary line. There is no way that the AFL could charge for this. Not yet. Not for a few seasons.
Until that issue is addressed, it will be a novelty.
The relentless hype and marketing attracted the crowds. Don't expect to see them repeated once the AFL practice matches start.
That said, the AFL have the best product in the world and this weekend showed that beyond a doubt. People love Aussie Rules Football. It seemingly doesn't matter who plays it. If you market it well enough, people will come.
I'd love the see the AFL put as much in to the VFL/SANFL/WAFL/NEAFL and align them all with their senior counterparts and have a national 2nds comp that plays a curtain raiser before the main game.
AFLW is a great concept and allows girls who love footy a pathway to a serious competition that was never available before this. It has a long way to go and will be relegated to the back burner for a while (like the WBBL) as it can never compete with any serious men's competition. Not yet, possibly not ever. My 9yo daughter said she'd like to go to a game, so that's a positive...Just a pity that I can't take her to a Saints game.

Part of his bulls*** Marxist agenda. SSP, RR, feminisation of the police force. Men are the basis of all violence and problems in society. That is his official narrative. Marxist idiot. Friend and sponsor of Roz Dawes. Need I say more. Interestingly he is considered a bully by his female staff. It's your opinion. Good for you Trev. How about you respect other peoples opinion then? If you think my opinion is wrong list your reasons otherwise........Trev from the Bush wrote:No, my optometrist says my eyesight hasn't deteriorated in the last four years. And, of course you will not knock it off. Like rabbits, ane toads and european carp you will still be here spouting you reactionary rubbish, eg, "the corrupt AFL" and why we need to play home games in Patagonia or Outer Mongolia. You say "give it 5 years"; I don't want to give it five weeks actually. It is a blessing for StKilda that it missed out on the first round of franchises (gee, I hate that word when it's used in football. All right if you have a McDonald's franchise though - they actually make money). That's MY opinion, CW.citywest wrote:No, I won't knock it off as you put it Trev from the Bush. It's not about the standard, it's all about growing your members/supporters. Thanks to the corrupt AFL St Kilda have missed out on this great opportunity. I admit the standard was very low but give it 5 years and it will be a great spectacle to watch. You are extremely short sighted.Trev from the Bush wrote:1. Knock it off, citywest.
2. If last night was an example of an "elite" women's competition, I won't waste my time watching. The skills were, generally, very poor and the "spectacle" not worthy of prime-time TV coverage. At time, the match resembled Auskick with players just throwing the ball at the boot and hoping for the best. On a positive note, continued TV coverage will prove a ratings boost for opposition TV stations. On what I saw last night I am relieved the Saints are not yet) involved in this competition and are concentrating our limited resources on our main objective - delivering our 2nd premiership. Sorry, when the commentators keep crapping on about the big crowd you can be assured the actual mach is rubbish standard. And so it proved.

Good luck to the girls.
But let's not get too excited.
The hype of a new competition, the lure of free admission and no external competition were major influences.
I think they are years away from standing on their own feet.
But a great start.

Disappointed in you White Winmar. If we had a team and our girls were putting their bodies on the line for the red, white and black you might feel differently. I'd certainly be out there screaming my lungs out for them against the Crows, Brisbane, Carlton whoever. It takes courage to play Aussie Rules and you can only do your best against your peers. Respect them for doing their best and then going off to the policeforce, office, school, hospital etc. Can't wait till we have a team and I can yell 'Go Sainters'.White Winmar wrote:At this stage, it's hard to disagree. I'd rather that we have a better alignment with Sandringham. Call them the Saints and have them wear red, white and black. Have total control over the team and develop our players to play senior footy.Gershwin wrote:Disappointed in you White Winmar. The AFLW is a great destination for the girls in junior footy but we have limited resources and should direct them to helping us win an AFL premiership not have a AFLW team.

Re: AFLW first game - Carlton V Collingwood
Gershwin, I have made numerous posts on here supporting the concept of the Women's league. Go back through my posts. My criticism was that I think they've gone too early, before proper development and talent identification can gain traction. I fully agree with having women and girls playing the greatest game in the world. I watched the two games in Victoria on the weekend, because I was genuinely interested and because I'll watch footy anytime, anywhere. The hype was way over the top and the standard was really poor. I couldn't understand all the gushing. It snacked more of hyperbole in the hope that the viewer would be fooled into thinking how fantastic it was. Even my partner, who's a big footy fan and was looking forward to it, was disappointed. She stopped watching the Footscray Fremantle game half way through the 3rd quarter. I also expressed my disappointment in us missing out on a licence, just a couple of posts ago. I still can't believe they picked Carlton ahead of us. Having said all that, I hope they don't give more licences out before 2019. Settle the initial eight, let them develop properly and the reassess. If we did get a team, I'd support them. But let's not kid ourselves that there is a very long way to go before people will want to turn on for the game, rather than the novelty.Gershwin wrote:Disappointed in you White Winmar. Our men's team have been trying to win a premiership for over 100 years now and have only saluted once. Surely it must be time now to give a women's team a go.
