Are you any good, BM? Pacey, skilful runner off half back?
I started with nothing and I've got most of it left!

On this forum, certainly.
Rugby League would have to be the stupidest, most moronic and over rated game of all time.

Unless something amazing comes along (Shiel or Kelly) lets just focus on our two first round draft picks.

Re: Are we light on for elite talent?
It seems pretty simple... this season should be used to develop and assess our talent internally.
Then use free agency to snear an AA player, trade one of our first rounders for another elite player and finish off the off season by using selecting the best avaliable player in the draft.

I like this scenario.footynut wrote:It seems pretty simple... this season should be used to develop and assess our talent internally.

Elite FA x 1
Trade first rounder and player/future pick for Kelly / Shiel or like.
Other first rounder for 1 x first rounder
That should really round out our list

Re: Are we light on for elite talent?
Saw this comparison of our midfield and the midfield of Carlton on the Blues Bigfooty forum and found it interesting, as Carlton were bottom four last year, and many tip will finish thereabouts again in 2017. Although we gave them a couple of hidings last year, they touched us up in 2014 and 2015. Of course they don't have our forward line, their rucks are not as good, or bat as deep, as ours, and we now have our key defence posts filled with Carlisle, Goddard and Brown, which we didn't have on the field last season. I have changed the order, and added Acres, from the Carlton forum and also haven't included Koby Stevens in this list as it wasn't mine. I think we are a better side now than them, but this concerns midfields specifically.
St Kilda Carlton
1. Steven 1. Cripps
2. Armitage 2. Gibbs
3. Ross 3. Murphy
4. Gresham 4. Kerridge
5. Dunstan 5, Armfield
6. Billings 6. Wright
7. Newnes 7. E. Curnow
8. Acres 8. Palmer
9. Steele 9. C. Curnow
Pound for pound, is our midfield better than theirs, and do you think that they have more A-graders rotating through their midfield?

Your friendly neighbourhood samurai.
Re: Are we light on for elite talent?
It's a good example of how we haven't invested our top picks in onballers like other teams. Cripps, Gibbs and Murphy look good on paper but you think Gibbs might go at some point and Murphy lacks a bit of mongrel cutting edge although he has been in a s*** team. Carlton should keep getting high picks for a while though so they can build around Cripps and Weitering.
But hopefully the likes of Acres, Dunstan, Steele, Billings can really go up a gear and throw in Steven, Armo and Stevens and we should be a much bigger, stronger midfield batting deeper. It going to be interesting how our lower draft pick guys go against the more blue ribbon of teams like Melbourne, GWS, GC etc. This is where we'll see if our recruiters have really earned their money. Probably why we do need to land a centrepiece mid to support Steven.

Re: Are we light on for elite talent?
I still think that it's the overall strength and balance of the team that counts, more so than how many individual "elite" players you have in the team.
For instance, a team with an elite midfield comprising say 4 elite "inside" midfielders (and with very little to no outside run) may very well be severely exposed on the outside by a team that has no elite midfielders but which has the right balance of inside and outside run.
I think we'd be a much better team with say DMac developing into an outside midfielder and with Freeman coming good (if both these things could somehow happen) - they don't have to be elite - just to balance things up and give us more outside run.
We don't really need to recruit an elite inside midfielder - that would be a waste, IMO. Even if it's Fyfe - as we already have the inside covered.

Re: Are we light on for elite talent?
Since we have two lst round picks in the next draft, has anyone checked out the talent for this years draft on Draft Trading site on Big Footy yet? I have the following on my wish list, in no particular order.
Nathan Krueger, 194 cm, from S.A. a tall, skillful, blonde, defender/utility.
Jaidyn Stephenson, 188cm, 78kg, from Eastern Ranges, has showed that he is close to the best forward in next years draft. Jaidyn has a turn of pace, is great overhead and has shown a capacity to kicks bags of goals.
Joel Garner, 184cm, 78cm, from Eastern Ranges again, One of the classiest players in next years draft is this indigenous midfielder.
Hunter Clark, 186cm, 79kg, from Dandenong Stingrays, a Balanced mid/half back. One of the toughest players in next years draft and also one of the most skilled,
Lochie O'Brien, 184cm, 74 kg, Another candidate for the number one pick is this outside midfielder. From Mildura, Lochie O’Brien is a class act with ball in hand and has speed to burn on the outside.
