And Ken Mann came to a few Western Saints functions about 4 or 5 years ago. Such a humble, reserved gentleman. He had kept himself in very good nick - he was like a good bottle of red wine - aged delightfully!

Sure are a lot of memories with those names. The name Ian (Doggie) Rowland brings a smile to my heart, he was such a fave of mine.

Wouldnt theSaints love the thumping, accurate kicking of Des Kennedy and Kevin (Ken?) Roberts off our half back line and half forward lines respectively these days.

I have a "Redlegs Review" dated 18th March 1971 (how time flies - and the cost of the publication was 10 cents!).

The subject of the publication was a Trial Match between Norwood and St Kilda played under lights at The Parade.

The St Kilda side was:-

There are dossiers on each of the players.

Norwood, then regenerating from a period of under performance dating from the mid 1960's, included Robert Oatey (Captain/Coach), Roger Woodcock, Don Roach (former West Adelaide Captain/Coach then from Hawthorn to give some experience to a very young side), Glen Rosser, Rod Seekamp, Michael Gregg, John Wynne (from West Perth) and Ian Stasinowsky who, apart from Roach who was by then retired and Oatey who was replaced as Coach by Bob Hammond in 1974 and then went to Sturt where his father coached, formed the core of the side which was successful from 1975 onwards (and the success of Under 19 and Under 17 sides of that time in the early 1970's provided the remainder of the core along with a few recruits including Ross Dillon and Stephen Kerley both from Melbourne).

The St Kilda Coach was Allan Jeans, the Captain was Ross Smith and the Vice Captain was Carl Ditterich.

The dossiers on the St Kilda players are quite extensive.

The dossiers include Shane Grambeau, Jeff Moran and Gary Colling who I assume did not make the trip to Adelaide.

From memory, which may be errant, I think the Saints won by a couple of goals in a competitive match.

Loris - it was indeed Kevin Roberts , a left footer at HFF. A favourite of mine. In the ilk of George Young ( but not as good as the great George27).

He did a collarbone in mid 66 and missed the flag. I reckon Barry Breen took his spot . Now there is a sliding doors moment ! Noofa Roberts would have swung onto his trusty left foot and nailed that last goal - and maybe a few others that day!

It is amazing to think we were far from full- strength that 1966 GF day - Big Carl and Ross Oakley as well.

Great to see the name of John Bonney in the 71 list. When he returned from Tassie that year to rejoin the Saints he ran our local milk bar. Lovely guy.

Keith Drinan was the best drop kick I can remember, but that was kicking out from full back. Not a running flanker like Roberts - he was poetry in motion. Lefties usually are aren't they?

If it was 1966 I was surprised that Daryl Griffiths (25) was not on the list? Can anyone advise what year he started or maybe he was just injured at the time of this practice match?

Two of best midfield drop-kick exponents I always admired were the recently past Billy Barrott (Richmond & later St. Kilda) and Colin Tully (the dreadful Collingwood). I can remember seeing them both getting the ball from a centre bounce ball-up and drop-kicking goals from 70 yards (pre-metric) - Very dynamic & impressive!!

John Manzie from that earlier match went onto become an excellent wingman for the Saints. Pat Flaherty ( on the right hand list ) became a legend of the Dandenong club, at HFF working beautifully with FF Frosty Miller. I assume P Murphy was Paddy Murphy who played one senior game later that year.
