Weller or Newnes for me.
I started with nothing and I've got most of it left!
Re: Next captain of StKilda
Mav is the sexy choice.
Gears the nuggety choice.
Others are too young or not right, except maybe Armo.
Expect Armo for 2 years.

I'm not sure I can believe it but I'm with Geary.
He can do it until Dunstan or McClunkin are ready

I'll go with Armo too for 2-3 years, reckon Newnes is a certainty after that

Re: Next captain of StKilda
It'll be Gears... Not my pick, but is the most respected leader
Mac, Jack and Dave will be deputies
Jack Newnes is a classy leader, but still a few years of being a main leader
Josh Bruce would be someone very much in line for leadership, along with Dylan Roberton

Hopefully not Gears - love him as a player but just too old to be the captain we need for the next 5-7 years.BigMart wrote:It'll be Gears... Not my pick, but is the most respected leader

From what I hear the player most like Roo in the way he prepares, commands respect and leads from the front is MAV.

I'd go with Jack Newnes now. Reports over the last few years have him as a pre-season high performer which has to earn him further respect on top of that which he earns week in and out during each season.

K will be happy. Haven't heard her on the interwebs anywhere for a while now. A staunch supporter his whole career and has defended him on many occasions.
Good on Gears if true.

Re: Next captain of StKilda
Captaincy is more about your influence on others, than your ability.
Geary is enormously respected within the wall of Seaford, that's all that matters in their eyes. It will be criticised but is a Maxwell appointment.
He does his job week in, week out... He's a gun
Love Mav, he is driven, he makes an impact when he is on... But is he consistent, is he influential on others performance, does he direct a group. Bruce is the clear leader of the forward line

Except that I don't think Maxwell turned 29 a few months into his captaincy.BigMart wrote:Geary is enormously respected within the wall of Seaford, that's all that matters in their eyes. It will be criticised but is a Maxwell appointment.
I cannot see why they would remove Riewoldt - who is enormously respected - and I think still wanted the role - for a replacement Geary's age.

You'd seriously appoint a 29 yo captain that may not be in the best 22 at seasons end?Con Gorozidis wrote:My leadership group prediction:

Love him but this is a new group and we need a leader from either mav, newnes or jack S that will be at the helm for at least 5 years

Re: Next captain of StKilda
I would hope the decision is between Armitage and Steven
And I agree that why would you move on from Riewoldt to Geary, a player who in the interests of this side really progressing in terms of transition from defence you would hope would be surpassed in 2017 and, at least, will be under fierce pressure from the improvement in the likes of Webster, McKenzie and White?
If you are promoting Geary, you may as well consider a more worthy candidate in Montagna.

Re: Next captain of StKilda
Strange
Geary is born in 1988 (same as Armitage BTW)
Montagna in 1983... Just a year younger than Roo
Fair difference I would have thought?
Leigh has been a champion, but his B&F results show he is in a slight decline
Geary (which some still can't understand or get their head around ... Finished second in the b&f just last season, and he's tracking upwards after a couple of top 6 finishes. In the eyes of the club he is the second best performed player at the club.
It's interesting what some people consider a great player firstly, and also what some think a great leader should be like.
I would think Jarryn is the lead candidate as it stands

Mentors: Montagna/Roo
Unlucky: Bruce

Re: Next captain of StKilda
Armitage and Steven do their work in the engine room where games are won or lost - and both can lead by example.
IF Geary is your love, why not Montagna?
Performed consistently in 2016 in a new role including some stand out games (v Collingwood) and has the versatility to return to a mid field role where he added an inside presence when we were really struggling.
