Re: Rowan Marshall rookie pick 10
There have been a few references to Marshall being from New Zealand but the article above from st.rick says he's from Portland. Maybe he was born over there.
He looks like a natural footballer in the video.

Found the answer.
http://www.saints.com.au/news/2016-11-2 ... n-marshallHis family moved to Australia when he was 18 months old and settled in Queensland. Both his brothers were born here.
The family relocated to Victoria when Marshall was three.

Re: Rowan Marshall rookie pick 10
Wonder what the knock on this guy as to why he wasn't picked up in the draft because looking at his highlights reel (obviously its only the good stuff) he looks a natural footballer and surprisingly coordinated for a young big man. His kicking motion is quite good and he doesn't look slow in his disposal. Most young big guys look like there's a 20 sec delay between the brain registering what to do and the body doing as its told.

Re: Rowan Marshall rookie pick 10
Rown wasnt a spur of the moment pick
http://www.saints.com.au/news/2016-11-2 ... r-marshall
"Despite winning North Ballarat’s best first-year player in 2015, Marshall was starved of opportunity in his first year at the club.
But in 2016, the 21-year-old benefited greatly from the end of North Melbourne’s alignment with the Roosters, playing 18 games and taking giant steps forward with his development, which eventually culminated in an opportunity at the highest level.
“We really like his character. To persist and make a name for himself through the VFL takes a lot of resilience and drive and he’s certainly shown that. We think he’s really got something to add to the group,” St Kilda recruiter Chris Toce told saints.com.au following the Rookie Draft.
“Rowan has been on the scene for a while now. He played a handful of games for the Roosters last year and then had a full season this year and we really like how he’s developed.”
Before the Saints added the final player to their list for 2017, Toce and the recruiting team at Linen House Centre watched the Portland native play almost every game this season, as well as conducting several interviews in the back end of the season.
WATCH: See highlights of new Saints rookie Rowan Marshall
“We would have watched Rowan play upwards of 18 times this year – so pretty much every week that he played,” Toce said.
“We interviewed him earlier this year down in Ballarat before training and then again at the state combine. A few weeks ago we went into the home and met mum and dad as well, so it’s been quite an extensive process.”
While he has spent plenty of time in the ruck during his football life to date, Marshall moves around the ground like a midfielder and uses the ball with poise and precision, traits that allow him to play a variety of roles.
With St Kilda well stocked in the ruck department, Toce expects Marshall to develop into a tall forward who has the capacity to play multiple roles where required.
“North Ballarat had big Orren Stephenson in the ruck this year, so he was able to develop some other aspects of his game. He played forward at times, back at times, but we really see an opportunity for Rowan to play forward and develop his craft,” he said."

Re: Rowan Marshall rookie pick 10
most clubs appear to have gone down the path of trying a tall forward option as a 2nd ruck. Perhaps we might try the tall defender option as a 2nd ruck. I like the fact he has gone forward and back in games. Hope he continues to develop because that kind of flexibility in a player of his size is hard to find.

The more I read about the kid the more optimistic I am about his future. Seems a real goer and his versatility and movement around the ground is promising.

Re: Rowan Marshall rookie pick 10
Interesting that he is being seen as a tall forward rather than a tall defender or ruck. We definitely need a forward pocket who can kick a couple of goals and relieve the number one Ruckman.
(just realised that this was actually an old article from November. Maybe he is being developed as a defender. Anyone who attends training notice where he is being played?).

Re: Rowan Marshall rookie pick 10
My guess is he along with Pierce are being groomed to see if they can be that effective fwd/relief ruck. I come back to every team that wins a flag has a relief ruck who can be genuine force forward but also in the ruck - not just a body thrown in there. You saw why in that prelim where Boyd had to take over the ruck most of the day because of injury and was effective. In finals where contested ball is so important you don't want to give the oppo a free hit in the ruck.Gershwin wrote:Interesting that he is being seen as a tall forward rather than a tall defender or ruck. Would we want CArlisle or Bruce to have ruck in a prelim or grannie? Carlisle might be effective with his size but would throw our backline out. I think our focus will be on developing that second big forward. It also gives backup if Paddy doesn't come on.

Pretty sure that at the AGM Richo said Marshall was a key defender .Gershwin wrote:Interesting that he is being seen as a tall forward rather than a tall defender or ruck. We definitely need a forward pocket who can kick a couple of goals and relieve the number one Ruckman.

Re: Rowan Marshall rookie pick 10
Interesting if we develop a 'ruck forward' how they structure the front half.
McCartin, Bruce, Membrey seems to be a solid and long term set up as 3 marking targets ....
Weller seems to have found a spot as a medium pressure forward, Koby Steven and Jack Steele can also play that position.
So that's 4
Jack Billings/Acres/Steele/Sinclair able to play as a high forward/extra mid
That's 5
Lonie, Gresham, Minchington, Sinclair, Wight, Long able to play deep small
That's 6
A ruck forward doesn't really fit the mould these days IMO - a forward relief ruckman maybe.

Re: Rowan Marshall rookie pick 10
That's exactly what they're doing with Lewie Peirce, BM. If you can't pinch hit in another role as a ruckman, you are doomed, al a Billy Longer. He is at the crossroads. If he doesn't develop the ability to take a big, contested mark and get a kick around the ground, he will be back on the trade table this year.BigMart wrote:Interesting if we develop a 'ruck forward' how they structure the front half.

Re: Rowan Marshall rookie pick 10
But there is no way Lewis Pierce could command a spot in the front half (injuries aside)
He would not displace any of our marking fwds, we would not play 3 out and out talls, and the only reason he could play is as a ruckmen who could possibly rest forward?
Isn't that Hickey

Always helps to have a back up. What if Hickey goes down? He has been injury prone in the past. Expect the best, prepare for the worst.

Re: Rowan Marshall rookie pick 10
From what one can read about him, I think that he can offer potentially a lot more than being a ruck/forward.
He potentially has the ability to play ruck, key marking forward, key back and also as a big outside mid (as in the Roo mold of play that is). He reads as being very mobile with some reoprts comparing his mobility to that of a mid.
If he can make then it, then that makes him the ideal Tall Utility as not only can he spell our No 1 Ruck, but our Key Forwards, Key Backs, as well as say play wing or midfield linkman to give our mids a chop out too.
So in a game you might see him in the ruck for 10-30%, forward for 20-40%, back for 20-40%, wing for 20-40% and bench for 10-20%.

If you want to know what "Fyfe to Rowan Marshall!" could (possibly) look like - see the Fyfe look-alike wearing number 12 quickly play on and wheel around after a contested mark and then kick it lace out to him .... at the 1 minute mark of the youtube video, below.

Re: Rowan Marshall rookie pick 10
Isn't he on the Rookie List?
And we need some "ground level" forwards who can not only defend and bring pressure to bear BUT can also kick goals (plural).
So I am not convinced having all these big framed mids up forward.

Yes indeed. But why does that matter?
Like any other new young player he is now at the club and is there to be developed into a future first 22 player.
We are just discussing as to what type of position that may be.
