The academy system is fine as it is, these non football states are now providing quality footballers for all clubs, not just for themselves.longtimesaint wrote:This academy system needs to be reviewed -it is too slanted in favour of the northern teams.SemperFidelis wrote:Jacob Allison bid matched by Brisbane
The Saints are under review, will it make any difference to the underachievers ?

It would be OK if they developed local kids, but I suspect they 'encourage' kids from our backyard to move into their academy's. Yeah, it's bs. AFL might as well hand over 3 flags to GWS on a platter... Don't understand why Brisbane have an academy..? :S
I hope GC fold

.ST KILDA
Who they got: Ben Long (25), Josh Battle (39), Ed Phillips (56)
Analysis: Long was a bit of a surprise at Pick 25, given he only came to prominence with some impressive VFL performances midway through the year. Battle was one of the draft’s biggest steals. The Saints would be laughing

Well you are bang on! I was reading his final one on Bigfooty which was a little different.SaintPav wrote:This is where I read it.Con Gorozidis wrote:He had Long at 57 and Battle at 26.SaintPav wrote:Knightmare rated Long and Battle as pick 26 and 27 in his phantom draft respectively.

Anyway this is what it says:
Pick 26: Western Bulldogs
Who they'll pick: Ben Long
Why he goes here: Western Bulldogs would benefit from adding another key defender and a bid on Harrison Macreadie here would make a lot of sense. With that said, as with Sproule, GWS would likely match bids for Macreadie. Given this, the Bulldogs may look at Long who played seven games for Footscray in the VFL. He kicked eight goals in his last two games with six in the final against Collingwood and two in Footscray's grand final win the following week. Long, at 183cm, 71kg, has the versatility to play back or forward. Down back he is a reliable stopper and up forward a capable finisher.
Pick 27: Richmond
Who they'll pick: Joshua Battle
Why he goes here: With the departure of Ty Vickery, Richmond would benefit from another tall forward. Battle, at 192cm, 90kg, is a strong mark overhead with clean hands at ground level and excellent endurance. He is a reliable kick on goal and to targets around the ground.

Re: 2016 National Draft thread
This really will go down as a career defining year for our recruitment team one way or another. In What has been generally acknowledged as a strong draft, we've plucked out 2 smokies when more recognised talent was still on the table.

Re: 2016 National Draft thread
just wondering if someone can help out? do we still have room on our senior/rookie lists or are we done now?
was talk of adding Cam o'Shea and seems like a jonty scharanberg or some other rated players that didnt get drafted could be a good pick up cheap.
Cheers and thanks

Re: 2016 National Draft thread
Our recruiters did their own thing.
With the exception of Gary Buckenara, Josh Battle was supposed to go in the mid 20s.
He was still available to us at 39 !!!!
Only a few had Ben Long being taken by the Dogs but after pick 50 .
We grabbed him at 25 before the Dogs had a chance at 28, they having taken ruckman English at 19.
Ed Phillips did not appear in any I saw.

Phantom drafts are pretty similar and there is a reason for that. It's called group think.ace wrote:Our recruiters did their own thing.

Re: 2016 National Draft thread
well... partially true.. but I dont see 5 goals getting kicked in a quarter at any level too often, regardless of winning margins.chook23 wrote:no opposition...................bulldogs won prelim by 20 odd goalsSuperDuper wrote:Long kicked 5 goals in a quarter of footy in a VFL final
And a Collingwood VFL team that makes the preliminary final would smash any TAC cup team, so I am not sure it is entirly "no competition" for a youngster
Anyway.. we can all agree that we hope he turns out well!!
Seems to combine the outside run we want with toughness and tackiing and desparation that Richo emphasises, so it is little wonder (in hindsight of course!!!) that we rated him highly!
