Re: Thanks to an absolute champion - Chips calls it quits
For much of his career Sam Fisher has been, perhaps Josh Gibson excepted, the best non key position backman in the comp. Unfortunately for the last few years he has had to play as a KPD too many times. His reading of the play, intercept marking and versatility deserved more All Australian recognition than he received.
Who will replace him?

the invisible and the non existent look very much alike

Cam O'Shea will replace him and end up a better player than Chips IMHO.

Loved watching Chips play defence for St.Kilda
Sam has been one of my favourite players to watch in recent times. I will miss Sam's defensive skill set including his awareness, intercept marking and safe delivery out of defence.
All the best for the future Sam and thank-you for your very valuable contribution to St. Kilda Football Club.

Yes you're right. The St Kilda champion we are paying tribute to here is not as good as the bloke that's just been delisted by the team that finished 10th.citywest wrote:Cam O'Shea will replace him and end up a better player than Chips IMHO.

My Dad used to say that it was sometimes better to say nothing and be thought an idiot than to open your mouth and remove all doubt...you are living proof that this theory is absolutely correct.citywest wrote:Cam O'Shea will replace him and end up a better player than Chips IMHO.

He succeeded in doing that years ago under many other nics, but isn't of course a troll. I'd never again say that would I?BringBackMadDog wrote:My Dad used to say that it was sometimes better to say nothing and be thought an idiot than to open your mouth and remove all doubt...you are living proof that this theory is absolutely correct.citywest wrote:Cam O'Shea will replace him and end up a better player than Chips IMHO.

Chips was an AA and won a club B & F at age 26 in 2008 in a side that finished 4th.citywest wrote:Cam O'Shea will replace him and end up a better player than Chips IMHO.
O'Shea is 24 and not on an AFL list and was just delisted by a bottom 8 side. He might want to get a wriggle on....

Re: Thanks to an absolute champion - Chips calls it quits
Probably didn't get the kudos he deserved outside of our club due to the fact he had to play as KPD since 2012.
One of my fave defenders alongside Maxy Hudghton.
Potentially we will be covering his retirement with 2 players - Brown as the KPD and O'Shea as the tall rebounding intercept defender. Very versatile was Sammy. Thanks Sammy.

Re: Thanks to an absolute champion - Chips calls it quits
Underrated footballer.
Injuries in the last 3 years meant that the footballing public forgot how good he was.
Regularly dominated games in 08-10, in one of the best teams in the AFL in that period. I still remember Mick Malthouse saying after one particular match in that period that Fisher was the most damaging defender in the AFL.
Would be in the starting back 6 in the best St Kilda team of all time. What an outstanding career.

Re: Thanks to an absolute champion - Chips calls it quits
Great "Thank You" video from Chips on StKFC website today. He spoke from the heart about his 13 years with the club, and thanked all who'd been involved in his career, not forgetting the fans & supporters. A champion player & a champion person. Thanks Sam!
Re: Thanks to an absolute champion - Chips calls it quits
Well done Chips. A brilliant career. I was at the praccie game early in the year watching him from behind the goals where he had the ball and was about to kick out to the left wing. Suddenly he stopped, turned to the right and off one step kicked it 50 m and landed it on the chest of playing leading out hard to the opposite wing that totally opened the play up. That courage to take the risky play opening kick, have the ability to calculate exactly where to the land the ball and have the skill and timing to pull it off will be really missed on our backline.
But I think its a great decision seeing as Demps was staying on. We need to open up positions on the backline for some of our young turks. We need to keep the regeneration going where older bodies are starting to fail.
I hope he gets a lap of honour at half time of our first home game this year. The fans deserve a chance to give the 200 game vet a standing ovation.

I've heard a whisper that Sam is harbouring an ambition to enter politics
In Springfield, they're eating the dogs. The people that came in, they're eating the cats. They’re eating – they are eating the pets of the people that live there.
