But the timing is weird. I assume he was offered a rookie spot and knocked it back, otherwise why the timing now not a week ago just before the delistings?

Sitting here reading the announcement with a tear in the eyes.

What an immense contribution he made to our club over so many years. So sad not to have had the opportunity to farewell him off the ground, but glad he had the chance to see if there was another season he could fit into.

Goodbye Mr Chips, you'll always be a champion of our club. Thanks for everything you have given the red white and black, and for some stellar memories.

To think we recruited him as a mature aged (23 year old?) full forward. Amazing achievement. A career to be very proud of.

Legend of the club. Will be greatly missed. Was one of the best in his prime. Would have to be just behind Roo and Lenny in our best players for our recent successful years.

Glad we got to see him live one last time in the last H&A game in 2016

That last quarter against the Lions was fun for the players and the crowd with Roo looking to kick his 10th but it was sad that we knew it might be his final game in RWandB

One of our best ever, always gave a 100%.

He was the protocol intercept marking rebounding defender, turned down big money to join GWS, a true St Kilda legend.

Round 23 against Brisbane had all the signs of his farewell game, just wasn't made public.

Sam will go down as one of the Saints greatest, no doubt. I will be looking back on his career in great satisfaction with the fact that I saw him arrive at StKilda as an unheralded recruit and leave as one of my all-time favourites. Well done Sammy on an outstanding career.
