Our Best Trade Week Maybe Ever

What an extraordinary week of footy, a week that shattered at least two myths.

Firstly, there was the myth that there is such a thing as club loyalty. Maybe that myth was shattered a long time ago.
Secondly, there was the football commandment. thou shalt not dishonor thy playing contract.

Thanks to this year’s trade period, playing contracts are not worth the paper they are written on from now on.

But for me the most intriguing development of trade week was what the Saints did to the Hawks and what Hawthorn did to itself.

Those St Kilda administrators have long, long memories.

They certainly didn’t forgot how the Hawks made us pay overs for Jake Carlisle.

They say revenge is a dish best eaten cold. Well in the case of St Kilda it wasn’t a dish they consumed it was a smorgasbord.

Firstly, they forced the Hawks to pay more than they were willing, to land Mitchell when we expressed interest, because we had the ability to trump them with a higher draft pick.

Then we committed an act of highway robbery that would have made Ned Kelly proud.

Hawthorn’s 2017 first round draft pick and a bunch of 2016 second rounders, which we didn’t have, in exchange for pick 10 and some fairly inconsequential picks as the steak knives.

And that is just the start of our revenge. We now have a stake in making sure Hawthorn’s fall from grace is as complete as it can be. The more they slide down the ladder in 2017, the greater the value of the pick they coughed up to us.

Even if they finish in the same position on the ladder next year, as they did this year, we still win in terms of that pick’s value. Now that is the ultimate revenge.

Hawthorn’s trade week has been fascinating to watch.

They bet the farm on a proven midfield champion and another midfield champion who is yet to prove he can fully function on two legs. High risk, high reward.

It could turn out to be the best decision they ever made, or the worst. And they lost their one and two B & F finishers as collateral damage.

And what about those Saints ? We grab a midfielder full of potential and promise, a proven midfield ball winner and a tall reliable defender. We got what we wanted.

And in this year’s draft which is awash with midfielders we just might get a tall, really talented young defender ( and there are one or two) falling our way.

Personally I like the South Australian kid Brennan Cox. If you read his biography, he sounds like the perfect fit for us and he might still be available at pick 23.

All we need now is for Nathan Freeman to come good and a premiership beckons I reckons.

We wont know for two years. Bains and Richo have done their bits, now over to Elshaugh and the team to get the draft right. But boy we have an opportunity to really improve our list in the next 13 months.

I guess we all interpret the evidence differently, but I think the Gibbs non-trade demonstrated clearly, once again, that having a contract is very different to not having one.

When players do not have a contract, they get to where they want to go.
When they do have a contract, clubs can keep them if they really want to.

That's how I saw it too. If they'd sold him cheaply it would indicate that the contract wasn't worth much, but the fact that they didn't get a suitable trade but kept him put the power in their hands.

Fyfe isnt even being considered.

Weller, Shiel and Kelly will all be chased. We will be hoping to get 1 of these 3 at best.

Two of Martin, Kelly or Weller is my mail. Imagine landing two of those? Shiel would be ideal also, but could be harder to pry loose. Martin for nothing, Kelly or Weller for a first rounder and player. Would you give up both first rounders if it meant getting Weller and Kelly? At least we're in a realistic position to make it happen.

What I can't understand was Caaaarlton's capitulation to Hawthorn with that pick trade. It made no sense. They laughably said they were short on third round picks.
Does Hawthorn have a compromising photograph of a very senior Caaaaarlton official?

All a matter of perspective. If we had effectively traded ourselves out of the next two drafts for a very dubious 'potential' star with a very dodgy knee, whilst having a number of senior and influential players towards the end of their careers, I wouldn't be a happy camper. They've really sold the farm. Huge risk.
I suppose having three premierships in a row makes a difference.

It was well publicised that Carlton expected more due to the conract. If he were uncontracted, 13 would have got it done without much hassel, one would think. Cant be worth more than Mitchell (due to age difference) who went for 14, for example

I agree players are pushing it, but contracts still have some value...

McCarthy had to sit out a year to get where he wanted to go, because he had a contract...
GWS eventually agree to terminat ethe rest of the contract but it is not really going to open any floodgates of players wanting to sit out a year
