Rating Trade period 2016

Post: # 1643987Post saintbrat »

First reviews are in
7.5 /10 from Fox
ST KILDA

Who Left: N/A

Who Arrived: Jack Steele (GWS Giants), Nathan Brown (Collingwood), Koby Stevens (Western Bulldogs)

Draft Picks: 23, 36, 61, 86

Champion Data says: “I’ve given them the bronze medal. They’ve filled their holes — they got a key defender for free and they needed help in the midfield. Their pick swap (with Hawthorn) was also a very good deal. It was a very good trade period for St Kilda.”

Chris Pelchen says: “I’m very happy with St Kilda. What I liked about them is they didn’t trade just for the sake of trading. I would still like them to look for that silky midfielder, they need more like them.”

Grade: 7.5/10

Waste of time.............if clubs traded/changed draft order (picks) you can not tell until actual draft and then only after a few years....once players assessed

http://www.afl.com.au/news/2016-10-20/t ... ade-period
A+ from AFL commentators
In: Jack Steele (GWS), Nathan Brown (Collingwood), picks 23, 36, and 2017 first-round pick (Hawthorn)
Out: Picks 10, 68, and 2017 second-round pick

Win: A mighty hand at the 2017 draft, more hard-bodied inside midfielders to build depth, an experienced key defender
Lose: A presence in round one of the 2016 draft

2016 draft picks: 23, 36, 50, 86, 104

What couldn’t they get done?
Nothing. The Saints were stealth-like through the trade period, getting involved in deals where they were required and emerging better off each time.

Nathan Schmook’s verdict
The biggest winners of the trade period after working with a desperate Hawthorn on a swap of picks. The Saints' crop of youngsters means they could stomach a slide from round one to round two this year, and they'll take two first-round selections into next year's draft, giving them an opportunity to trade in experienced guns or continue recruiting quality young players. They are also well poised now to start using free agency more aggressively.

Rating: A+

It's fair to say the critics have given us a pass with flying colours this trade period.

Way to go, Saints!

Anything less than playing finals in 2017 would be more than dissapointing.

So we spent a 1st, 2nd and 4th and gained a 1st, two 2nds, Steele (rated teens), Koby (former 22), Brown (former 10) and a 4th. Its a massive win in anyones language.

We got the full back and two solid goalkicking inside mids which we needed. A Kelly/Shiel type next year (explosive silky mid) and we are laughing.

Interesting to note that we now have Roberton, Stevens and Carlisle from that horrible failure of a trade/draft year in 2009. Important from an age spread imo that we have that. Note Koby was 22 and Carlisle 23 that year (Fyfe 20!).

I must say I'm a bit disappointed that we didn't either upgrade 36 or get back into the first round this year. Cards didn't fall our way but its 2 years in a row that we didn't get involved in the crazy final day pick swap fest that seems to happen.

Hawthorns brain fade helped us nail the period, take that away and we still did well but I get the feeling the inner sanctum would be frustrated by the clubs who railroaded the trade period.

Love the Steele trade, feel as though we could've potentially screwed GWS (as they seemed to send away some players very cheaply) but hopefully the good trading relationship we have with them help out next year with one of Kelly/Shiel. Reason why I love it is because both Steele and Bruce were players who Giants said were required and were sad to see go - the don't say that regarding the Carlton boys do they?

Overall we nailed it, I'd give an A. Our lack of last minute upgrade stopped us getting a plus but can't be disappointed thanks mainly to Hawthorn.

Interesting or perhaps significant that we didn't lose a player.

Saints were conservative and shrewd in the trade, we only added solid role players or depth, no superstars.

It would have been nice to add a silky midfielder like Prestia or Mitchell.

Love our deal with the Hawks, that feels like a win for us.

Carlton v GWS next year will be like watching The GWS firsts playing the GWS seconds.

The Saints are under review, will it make any difference to the underachievers ?

the way I view it, cond=sidering our starting position of 10 but no second:

using 10 to get Steele+23 would be a fair deal on both sides, particularly with the top 8 this year supposedly in a groupp and then a drop off.

I think Steele has shown a lot for his age, was taken at pick 22 but bid on at 15, has developed in hist first 2 years the way one would hope of a good youngplayer. Same age as Petraca and his stats are very comparable.

I for one would not have complained about that deal, it is what we would have had to pay any other club. Imagine if he was a young Collingwood first rounder who had shown as much ! Would not have got 23 back if we gave them 10.

So.. fair trade done, correct price paid.

So that mean for the rest of the trades we effectively did:
2016 picks
50,68 > 36, 61

2017
our 2nd rounder > Hawks 1st rounder (could be a hhhhuge upgrade when we finish well above them in 2017!!!)
Our 5th rounder > WBulldogs 4th rounder

So we upgraded 4 picks basically for free, IMO... obviously the 2017 first rounder being significant but dont discount a shot at pick 36!

Terry wallet rated the Saints an eagle in golf terms , the best of all teams addressed the need for a couple of bigger bodied mids and key back and improved our draft position strongly for next year.
Also we did all our dealing early only waited till the end to see what pick Koby would end up with

First time I've ever heard Mitchell being called silky! Steele could be anything, he will probably be 'silkier' than Prestia and Titch. He could be the pick of our midfield kids in 5 years time.

What a horrible thought then winning a flag

The last 3 letters in CrownBet are B-E-T.
Taking bets is not based on chances of winning, it is based on making a book of bets that create a profit no matter who wins.
Collingwood and Essendon have heaps of over enthusiastic supporters so lots of money placed on them.
So a betting agency adjusts the odds to ensure that even if one those two clubs were to be premiers CrownBet still makes a profit.

We have deferred our first round pick to 2017.
It may slip from 10 but only if the Hawks make the finals.
We have not only restored our already traded away 2nd round pick 31 but then traded away next years 2nd round but gained a next year 4th rounder
We have improved that 2nd round pick 31 to pick 23
We have improved our 3rd round pick 50 to pick 36
We have improved our 4th round pick 68 to pick 61
We picked up Jack Steele
We picked up Nathan Brown
We picked up Koby Stevens

Steele, Brown, Stevens, pick 23, that's four players added
Mid 3rd rounder to late 2nd rounder, mid 4th rounder to early 4th rounder, that's two picks improved
We win 6 times
1st rounder deferral yet to be determined
A 2017 4th rounder replaces a 2017 2nd rounder

This has been an absolutely brilliant trade year.

My mail was that we were all set t do a serious pick swap with GWS .... our 23 = 815 pts & 36 = 502 - Total of 1,317 points in exchange for their pick 15 = 1,115 pts. All that went tits-up when Deledio agreed to go there (i.e. anywhere but stay at Punt Rd!) and hence they then needed pick 15 to satisfy the top-up Tiggas on that trade. Now that would have made it an A++ trade period.

Still I'm really really happy. I think Ameet and his crew smashed it.

we basically have four picks in the first two rounds to play with 16-17.
if two of those four are guns - then we win.
