I believe Kelly and Shiel are both out of contract next year, so now would be the ideal time to tell them about how good our club is :)

Pick 23 + Pick 36 + 2017 first rounder

23 and 36 are probably worth the same points as Pick 10 once it slips to 12 because of academy queue jumping.
We got their 2017 first rounder for pick 68 !!!!!

Why didn't they offer all three of those to Gold Coast then say trade picks for what you want.
With pick 10 they have significantly reduced their points count.
St Kilda have won out by 900 to 1200 points.
Pick 10 to Hawks basically means he can go to the draft for pick 10 to Hawks if Suns choose to play hardball. So power now falls to Hawks.

Also it was suggested Suns demanded a top 10 pick from Hawks.

We were the only club who had a top 10 pick for sale.

Stars aligned.

Crazy good deal for us, to be honest, we just won trade week.

Hopefully Saints 2017 first goes for pick 6, or 23 or 36 gets upgraded on its own with a fringe like Eli to a first. Otherwise, sit on our hands and watch Hawks miss the 8 next year. WE DONT HAVE TO TRADE!

They needed pick 10 to close the O'Meara trade its as simple as that.
Suns wanted their pick 14 originally and Hawks traded that for Mitchell.
Hawthorn get deals done and knew they had to pay and Suns didn't want any future or lower picks.

Thanks for the info Jaxons. If they're out of contract next year, what's the process of approaching them? Are we permitted under the rules to talk to the players directly whilst they're still under contract to GWS? i.e Can we just contact their manager to register our interest and ask to talk to them? Do we have to notify GWS?
Curious about the process.

From what I can tell Suns want pick 10 + Liam Shiels.
Suns will eventually have to take something.

Anyway back to us.
Kelly or Dylan Shiels would be perfect for us. Absolutely perfect.
I get a feeling we are conceding the flag to GWS in 2017 but 2018-20 we will have a red hot go at it.

Aren't there some rules about it? About approaching players who are contracted to another club? Or is there an unwritten code of conduct? Or is it a free for all and you can talk to whoever you want whenever you want.

Every manager sends a list to all clubs as to which clients are out of contract at the end of the year.
There is constant dialogue with player managers that progresses further when there is interest from both sides.

Cheers. So it all goes through the player's manager. Much like an actor being approached for a part in a film or play. The actor has an agent who is paid to negotiate in their best interests. So the clubs, the Saints for example, would never approach a player directly, they would always go to his manager?
And trying to poach a player who is not out of contract at the end of the year? Is that off limits?

Definitely not as with Gibbs and Deledio this year.
Just makes it harder for clubs as they have to get the club they are signed with to agree to let them go for a suitable trade.
Whereas power sits not as strongly with a players current club if they are out of contract.

Don't get me wrong I know that, but it's like the empty PSD threat. Won't happen but it definitely doesn't hurt your position when you have that there in the background either.

What I don't really understand is that GC weren't interested in a future first directly from Hawks, but apparently are one of the clubs who have contacted us about our future picks. Something doesn't quite add up there, I'm sure there's an explanation involving Hanley, wanting to hurt Hawks or something like that but I'd love some logic around that.

As I previously said though, we don't have to trade it, we are witty pretty and going into next year with two firsts for one of Shiel or Kelly is a monster opportunity.

The other gun goal kicking mid who could come for nothing would be Dusty. Everyone is Fyfe mad but Dusty and Shiel/Kelly would form part of the greatest midfield ever assembled!

Jaxons previously said, somewhere in this thread, that we cooled on JOM because he's too big a risk. Too high a price given his injury issues.

I will get kicked for this - but being in Canberra I saw a lot of GWS. I thought Sheil was just going this year and although Kelly improved there is no way I would give 2 1st rounds for him. If we had a choice I would like Smith from GWS.

We cooled on Jaeger for 3 reasons.
His asking price.
The trade price which you are seeing how hard that is for Hawthorn to satisfy.
And his body was a huge risk as he has had too much patella tendon cut out and his ability to play AFL football long term looks compromised.
GWS would not trade Shiel now so we had no chance to get him this trade period.

Shiel is a superstar and personally would be my first choice.
However all our recruiters and coaches love Josh Kelly.
