Hawks Have a Lot To Teach In Trading

Post: # 1641723Post damienc »

Normally I don't like talking about other football clubs but I have come to the conclusion that the Hawthorn Footy Club is the best in the business when it comes to trading players and getting what you want.

They've orchestrated some remarkable gets in the past and 2016 is shaping up as no exception.

If they can land O'Meara and Mitchell, the club will have achieved something unbelievable.

I know neither deal is done and dusted but both are looking pretty solid.

If the Hawks pull it off it's against the odds big time. The Suns want players not picks. Sydney want picks. Both O'Meara and T. Mitchell want big dollars and Hawthorn has significant salary cap pressures and no picks high enough.

There was a suggestion doing the rounds yesterday that the Saints would try and gazump the Hawks by offering pick 10 for T.Mitchell. We don't have the same salary cap restraints, so we could pay him the dollars as well.

If that were true the Hawks might have been cooked as far as T. Mitchell was concerned.

But I wake up this morning and what do I discover? Sam Mitchell, their premier midfielder and paid huge bucks, is wanting a trade to the Eagles. If that happens it will be instant salary cap relief.

The Hawks still have problems but they live to fight another day.

They are clever buggers those Hawks.

I highly doubt that the Hawks will get much at all for Mitchell leaving for WC. Other than relief in salary cap pressure so that they can pay the young guns coming into the club. If WC were to part with pick 13 for a 35 yr old then they need their heads read.

You are way, way off the mark there IMO.

Sam is 33. Will only play one year. Possibly 2.

It will only be a very late pick, or swap of mid to late picks. Pickwise it is going to be minor.

This is only about freeing up salary cap.

Actually I reckon it is a sign that cracks are appearing and that the Hawks are about to slide.
Mitchell squeezed out. Bruest cracking it and stating that he will not be traded. Other Hawks will know that they are all on the chopping block.

Clarko is a master. His ability to identify needs has been the main reason they've won flags. He makes decisions that create opportunities for immediate results. It's the quality of trades and the impact guys like Guerra, Dew, Burgoyne, Gibson, Lake, etc have had that seperate Hawthorn from the rest. Like you say, if they can get both Tom and Jaeger it will be incredible

Apart from his ability to motivate and drive the playing group, I think Clarko embraces change and he's evolved his game plan and his tactics to suit his opposition. Clarko is undoubtedly the best coach in the modern era of AFL. To be able to sell your message to the on field leaders and to be able to sustain the team at a very high level for so many years is a great achievement on its own, but there's even more.

The legacy of the man will go down in the history of HFC but also his coaching prowess has spread to around a third of all AFL clubs. Chris Fagan called Hawthorn a football university because of the amount of assistants under Clarko that have gone on to be senior coaches (and do a very good job) including the current premiership coach

The media and most of our supporters attributed our coaches role as a major part of our success in 2009 - 2010. The foundations for the blueprint that gave our team a chance to contend were years in the making and we were on an upward path before he arrived.

He blamed our GF losses on luck. He thought that he was perfect and that the playing group had let down the supporters and the club and denied him his glory. I saw it differently as did many others who were treated as heretics. Leadership and positivity were lacking and a desire to be creative to improve the team were abandoned by Ross Lyon very early on in the 2011 season. His results last year are a reflection of a bloke running out of ideas. It's laughable that after 2009/2010 that people thought Lyon was a better coach than Clarko

Yep. Point taken. I should have added to my original post that I have a lot to learn as well.

Sam Mitchell turned 34 today so pick 13 is not even in the galaxy of possibilities. He is basically going on a coaching contract.

The Hawks got lucky because their good list around 2010-2012 corresponded with the time the the expansion clubs entered the comp and hoovered up all the young talent. This meant that the Hawks superiority at that point in time was left in tact as noone could get the talent to challenge.

Their only decent players under 25yo are Burton and Sicily. This is why they are so desperate for JO'M and Mitchell.

McEvoy and Savage
there you go, its more relevant now than that other long winded thread

The fact is both our clubs have had a similar time era rise to the top & since '61 they have won 13
To win you need to eliminate as many negative variables as possible and on balance get more decisions right than blunders along the way
Envy will get you nowhere but ignoring what they do is the every reason our histories differ so much

Yep. The Hawks got lucky. 3 x flags in a row lucky. Wish we could inherit a third of their luck.

Nothing brilliant in what Hawks have done. It's really easy when you're a successful club and players are throwing themselves at you. This weird mythology around Hawthorn is bizarre. The clubs who have to work hard to get deals done are clubs like us, and I would say that our recent form in trading has been impressive. How about giving some credit to us?

Further to my original point.

Mitchell officially a Hawk in return for pick 14.

O'Meara won't be far behind.

No mucking about with those Hawks, they get things done and early.

Wish the Saints had the same philosophy.

If the Hawks were so good why did they f*** up against Footscray and subject us to
the embarrassment of being stuck on one flag

so you think losing a semi to the eventual GF winners after three consecutive GF's is a failure?
some people...

besides didnt you say the dogs were the afl love child and gifted the win?

This is an AFL smokescreen to deflect attention away from giving Sam his 2012 Brownlow Medal off Jobe.

6.30pm Tuesday. ESS get done by Swiss Court.
7.00am Wednesday. Sam Mitchell to West Coast?

Sounds like PR orchestration to me.

There's no wierd mythology about Hawthorn. Everyone throws themselves at them because they win premierships. Lots and lots of premierships. I've seen the bastards win twelve. My team? Zero in that same period.

I smell a rat on this Mitchell move.

AFL has asked Cotchin and Mitchell to make a submission on the 2012 Brownlow. Embarrassing.
