All good. But why Stevens? Seems like a GOP. Already 25 so not young and still developing physically. Third club......not good enough at WCE and WB, why us?jaxons wrote:Steele is an outstanding pick up.evo wrote:Very underwhelming trade period for us so far compared to other clubs. I hope that the silence around our trading means that we are trying to land a bigger name.

Jax is a big name player that has been mentioned previously still a possibility? A lot of noise that we are making a play for Tom Mitchell. Unsure if there's any truth. I'm sceptical tbh.

list management/recruiting staff under the pump big time with this bloke.
Good back-up for Membrey and Billings just in case.
If we only have to use pick 67 on him then we might as well.
Membrey obviously more of a mark on the lead guy and Billings likes to maraud outside 50.
Either way if they both got injured we would be a man down.
You need cover in all positions and I am guessing we get Stevens for pick 67 at the most. You still need 40 blokes on a list. They wont all be stars.
Not worth being angsty about it.
If we gave up pick 30 for him then by all means it would be a disaster but that wont be happening.
Stevens is a competent and adequate player. Hard as a cat's head.

Re: Jaxons come on down
Yeah that's all good, but it's three or four years ago. Why hasn't he established himself in their best 22? Why is he still a fringe player three or four years later? I don't understand why we're chasing guys like this.SaintPav wrote:OMG

Anyone thinking GWS lose the trade need to get their heads around the academies.Mr Magic wrote:Doesn't it almost guarantee they can pick up a 'non-academy' player before they might be forced to use an early first round DP?fugazi wrote:crazy deal for GWS, must be regretting not dealing last year
basically Cam McCarthy was the steak Knives
McCarthy was already 'gone' so they have upgraded Pick 7 to Pick 3 and thrown in some later picks they weren't probably going to use.
Likelihood of pick 7 being used on an academy player was high, but GWS had more than enough points already to cater for this years academy crop.
So giving up pick 7 means nothing, they will still have enough points from their existing picks (and whichever picks they get from guys like Steele, Marchbank, WHE etc).
So what does this trade actually mean? It means GWS just traded McCarthy for pick 3.
Freo do well in the trade, but Giants do better and just keep getting stronger.

Re: Jaxons come on down
Well with we assume Steele and Stevens being added to the ranks, and with Acres having announced himself as a mid in late 2016, it looks like the days of playing many small forwards in the one team may be over.
We needed more players to rotate through the midfield and it looks like we are about to have that. And with those three being 189, 189 and 190 (or taller) it is going to be quite a different midfield.
Seb is 187 too.
Steven and Gresh for a bit of flash, dash and magic too.

Doggies have many more mids than the Saints do. They bat very deep in mids.

Probably 2% behind Clay Smith in the same position and the Dogs have Crameri coming back.st.byron wrote:Yeah that's all good, but it's three or four years ago. Doesn't mean Stevens is s***. I doubt we will be paying top dollar or giving up much for him.
Is he better than Tom Curren? If the answer is yes then that makes our 2017 list better than the 2016 list.
.....Might mean the end for the Panther though which makes me a bit sad. I love the Panther.

Re: Jaxons come on down
Without being certain, I think you'll find Stevens got injured in '16 at the wrong time, spent a while out, and couldn't break back into the premiers late on.
What I am certain about is he had an excellent turnaround from an ex-Kanga inside-outside mid, to about the best clamp down inside mid in '15. Hard, very hard, and did many a job on almost all, including our very own Jack (not the plural), but also got it going the other way.
I wouldn't count it out, and if the price is right, and don't forget the Doggies will have cap pressure looming (e.g. Boyd's contract, which does have performance bonuses), then he might just be a useful addition. The same recruitment mob at our joint did have interest before he went to the Dogs - and I don't rate Ameet et al as twits at their caper.
In the wash up, I would like to see blokes who are hard in the middle, and can cover ground, provide a bit of protection for the likes of Jack - he needs some help, and those who sacrifice for the greater good.
Happy to leave it to wise men, me (well, wiser than me, anyway).

Man I am pleased with Jack Steele. And we still have pick 10 up our sleeve.
Imagine a midfield with Ross, Steven, Acres and Steele running around out there bullying opposition sides. If Freeman ever comes on then goodness me.

That's what we're here for… I hope the rumoured 450K is miles off the mark in any case, he's obviously not a bad player but he's certainly not elite.jaxons wrote:In your opinion.dragit wrote:Jax can you please tell the team to abort the Stevens idea… it's a stinker.
Hopefully we take another mid with 10 and start getting games into Freeman & Steele which would make someone like Stevens a waste of our huge cash surplus (IMO) > meanwhile Prestia, Mitchell & O'meara are finding new homes at other clubs.
