Bill Brownless just said he heard of a potential three way trade
McCarthy to Freo
Ballantyne to Eagles
Mackenzie to GWS
that would give the Giants
-Mackenzie
-Davis
-Patful
and Tomlinson.
If that happens I hope a few little birds get back in the ear of Tomlinson

McCarthy is worth a fortune.
McKenzie would be worth a little bit but is turning 29.
Ballantyne is worth about a can of coke.

I am not sure you are aware of McCarthy's mental health issues of the last year? He was worth a fair bit but what has happened over the last 12 months places some doubt on his value. ie Yes he may come back like Buddy did, or he may also come back like Clarke did (ie no where as good as he was).dragit wrote:It would need a lot picks involved to even the ledger…The_President wrote:Bill Brownless just said he heard of a potential three way trade

In addition he will only play in WA now, and WCE have ample key forwards.

Patfull might retire.
I think the key backs at GWS will be Haynes, Davis, Himmelberg.

Ok. Let's assume you are right and the Twitter post was rubbish.
Then my question is: Who are we targeting? Logic tells you we are after two guns. An inside mid and a key defender. The club has publicly acknowledged that these are two areas that need boosting.
If Jack Steele is the mid we are chasing, we are no certainty to get him. According to reports, Steele is yet to make up his mind about leaving the Giants so at this point he is only a possibility.
But let's assume, for arguments sake, that Steele is more than a possibility of coming to the Saints, then where is the KPD, that we want and desperately need, going to come from?
I am pretty certain we are not interested in McKenzie. Aside from the fact that he is the wrong demographic, Ezy would not be the kind of defender to suit our game plan. He is the old fashioned one on one go hard at it backman. Talented but one dimensional.
And while he rarely loses a one on one contest we need a rebounding KPD who can win a one on one contest and orchestrate an offensive launch from defence. McKenzie can do the former but not the latter IMO.
So who does that leave who might be available? The list is not that long. Marchbank is going to Carlton. We were into him in a big way but we missed out. If the rumours are right and we are wanting to be aggressive in this trade period, then I ask again, Who does that leave?
Everyone we are going to be chasing will be under contract. So are we are going to have to lure them with the promise of big dollars among other temptations.
Apparently, we possess the war chest to do it. But we are going to have to satisfy not just the player but his club as well.
We don't have enough high draft picks as currency. We have no second round pick. So we are going to have to pay big dollars, use draft picks and players, as well as involve other clubs in our plans, to get what we want.
I also think our priority is very much a young key defender. I'm not saying we are necessarily chasing Aidan Corr, who is under contract. But he is the kind of player we would want. Or maybe Adam Tomlinson but he has publicly committed himself to the Giants next year.
Pick 10 for someone like Steele and Corr or Steele and Tomlinson would theoretically be a good deal for us, if we could make it happen. I get the feeling the club is not that interested in this year's draft and might be happy to use pick 10 for a higher purpose.
Even if Steele and Corr don't end up at our footy club I am pretty sure that is the kind of deal the Saints would be trying to stitch together.
The Giants might be the most logical club to entertain a deal like that. They need to off load players because of salary cap pressures and to make space so they can recruit some more experience to Western Sydney. Our first round pick might help them in their negotiations.
I am not saying this is going to happen but it would be interesting if it did.
Just some random thoughts on my part but if anyone has any better ideas and I am sure you have, I, for one, would be interested in hearing them.

Re: Jaxons come on down
If we act reasonably conservatively this year and manage to make the eight in 2017 then that should surely make us a more attractive destination and we should also have a better understanding of the guns out there that we really need. Our forwards and backs could make extraordinary steps in the next 12 months. We don't want to be overstepping this trade period when we have so much talent coming of age. Let's keep the trades to a minimum and make the most of our draft opportunities.

No, I'd missed that news… yikes, apparently freo were offering 2 first rounders for him last year and GWS said no.saintsRrising wrote:I am not sure you are aware of McCarthy's mental health issues of the last year? Armo is on the front of the membership flyer that arrived today so he must be staying. Although he is looking down and looks pretty sad - maybe thinking of the dogs win and all our bad luck.
And the tag line might be a bit of unfortunate timing "We know we are building something special that no other club has" Yeah one f****** premiership cup

Re: Jaxons come on down
Seems like things have gone very quiet in this thread of late. All of our ITK's have gone to ground, and a number of posters both on here and big footy are 'taking breaks' from posting. Most recently, BS who is copping a bit of heat (allegedly).
I just hope that our club is working on something big, and hence the secrecy.
I always look forward to Jaxons and Tony's posts but even they have stopped providing updates. At this time of the year, it's the only footy news I'm interested in and the reason I check in to SS.
I look forward to seeing what develops for the saints during the trade season, and hope all this secrecy is worth it.

I get the same feeling....I have noticed Jaxons check in on the site every so often but with no comment.....maybe checking to see if other itk are onto whatever is brewing but all things feel like a big trade.....Kick-it-lace-out wrote:Seems like things have gone very quiet in this thread of late. I'd prefer to deal with Essendon directly, we have a history of trading pretty effectively with them.dragit wrote:I just made one up to make people really angry:
