Goal of the year nominations...

Post: # 1635764Post kp83 »

Gresh's goal didn't make the top 3 for the year!

Obviously Eddie Betts' will win but surely Gresh's was better than the Shaun Atley one that was nominated and probably even Buddy's one.

Or am I being biased?

Absolutely disgraceful that Gresham did not at least get nominated...
In disbelief.

thought gresham's was better than buddies, particularly the moment in the game when it happened (geelong hit the front by 9 points with 5 minutes to go), but am probably being biased.

that being said, wight's goal in the 1st vs the swans was miraculous not sure why dont talk about that one much, incredible goal from a gresham handball as well.

Buddy's was pretty awesome. 10 metres inside the square, and he hit the goal square on the full (and straight as you like!)

Atley's was absolute rubbish. Shouldn't have even had a shot at goal if he hadn't have stuffed Petrie with that kick, and it was just a regulation checkside from a tight angle. Yawn.
Gresh's at least showed poise and a bit of confidence in breaking the tackle.

Fox have done a top 100 moments

and only 2 Saints spots -
92 _ Roo's 300th
and 32 - Gresh's goal

with a couple of others for teams playing against the saints

But we saw just about every one of Eddie's goals and most of Buddy's

Also showed the 15m kicks against Hawthorn with measurements.

I didn't mind them showing betts and Franklin. They were all quality goals.

But Silvagni passing instead of kicking for his first goal and then another moment for his first goal which was pretty average. It was a little over the top.

Judging goals and marks is always a bit like splitting hairs. So I do think
that when it's a 50/50 they're inclined to favour the indigenous player. Big
deal. Might as well find some positive way to split the hair. It does mean,
however, that someone like Gresham would have to kick a goal while doing a
cartwheel from the top of the stand to get the same kind of kudos as Betts
or Rioli.

Ironically, Andrew Walker is indigenous and missed out on mark of the year
in 2011 to Andrew Krakoeur. As Walker himself will tell you, his mark was
much better.

Gresh is indigenous, a first year player, and kicked a miraculous goal to spur the team on to a famous victory against one of the flag favourites. What more do the bastards want?

Didn't know that but it's good news. The Saints seem to have had a shortage lately
and that's not very Saints-like.

You must have overheard me having this very same conversation yesterday. The problem wtih most of Eddie & Buddy's goals were that they were just repeats. eg. Eddie kicking a goal from a tight angle in the forward pocket or Buddy kicking it 60 plus metres. The other player who featured heavily was Dangerfield. Just disappointing that they couldn't find a spot for Lewis Peirce kicking a goal with his first kick or Roo kicking a lazy 9 & taking 21 marks along the way.

Think Betts has the goal sewn up, and agree that Gresh's was better than both other contenders.
Mark of the year is a toss up - Daniher at full pace versus Daw at full stretch. Neither thought to speccy the landing - idiots!
