Re: Roo stepping down from captaincy.
I'm sad. Of course I knew he couldn't be captain forever. But there it is.
One thing is for sure. It was a privilege to be there to watch his last game as skipper. An absolute privilege.

Re: Roo stepping down from captaincy.
not happy. got the feeling the media just pressured him once he stated the time might be right. just heard it repeated as fact over and over. feel the club should have done the right thing by him and suggested it was his if he wanted it, and hand over after the record. it'll probably never come again.

Disappointing on a personal level that he's not breaking the record, but he would know best if the time is right. Thanks for the years of service Rooey, and good luck to the next in line.

Re: Roo stepping down from captaincy.
Maybe he wants to devote more time to his family. He's been a magnificent skipper; we couldn't have been better led and he is going to make sure we are in good hands when he does eventually quit.
And who knows, this may actually prolong his playing days.

The room heartily booed at the announcement, he wants fans to trust his call though

Re: Roo stepping down from captaincy.
Really disappointed in this move.
All I wanted was for him to overtake Sticks record. What's the deal with that?

Re: Roo stepping down from captaincy.
There is a glaring comparison between sticks and Roo that would make that pretty much pointless and it wouldn't look good. Most games as captain and no Premership is a false ecomony. It hurts to say it but its time to let go and move on.saintspremiers wrote:Really disappointed in this move.

Re: Roo stepping down from captaincy.
I don't think it was his call at all and listening to his speech last night has not changed that view. My belief is that he is going along with what the club has decided.SainterK wrote:The room heartily booed at the announcement, he wants fans to trust his call though
I do agree that Roo will always put the club first and that is what he is doing.

Re: Roo stepping down from captaincy.
I would have loved him to have got the all time captaining games record, but pragmatism is more important in getting the team closer to premiership success than trying to claim token accolades.

Re: Roo stepping down from captaincy.
P.S. Remember around five years ago, many were crying for him to be relinquished of his captaincy. Incredible that he still went on leading regardless. A phenomenal captain.

We all know Carlscum cheated the cap and other things to win the flag in Kernaflog's era

Re: Roo stepping down from captaincy.
So seven more games as captain was really going to make that much of a difference?tony74 wrote:Exactly why he did it. ( The last part )bigcarl wrote:Maybe he wants to devote more time to his family. I'd have no issues with them stating this as a plan and a captaincy takeover during the season.

That would never happen as it is done for the wrong reasons - if that was happening I would question both the player and the club. It's unprofessional.
Anyways - the record isn't that important. It's at the very low end of important achievements. You can't be dragged over the line on this one. It's a if it happens it happens case.

Re: Roo stepping down from captaincy.
I can understand to some degree, why folk like SP would be disappointed in Roo's decision. However, leadership is exactly what Nick has shown with this decision, and more importantly the strength of character shown to stick with it. Our club has important work to do in 2017 and its not about taking some record away from Carlton, but rather building a special kind of culture going forward. Nick has shown way more leadership in this decision, than some of our supporters have displayed in an unwillingness to see the motivation behind it. Good on Rooey!
St Kilda forever ( God help me)
