DANIEL Merrett says having to chase fellow Gold Coast junior Nick Riewoldt all over Etihad Stadium yesterday reinforced his decision to hang up the boots.

Merrett played his 200th and final senior match in the 58-point loss to the Riewoldt-inspired St Kilda and was chaired from the ground with players from both teams forming a guard of honour for the colourful key defender.

Family, friends and former teammates such as Jonathan Brown, Troy Selwood, Matt Maguire, Andrew Raines, Joel Patfull and Jed Adcock surrounded Merrett after the match in the Brisbane dressingrooms while Luke Power paid a visit before the game

The boys in our future forward lines and every young Saint on the list will benefit from having a champion like Rooy at the club and seeing what he can achieve even this late in his career. What a player!! What a hardworker and what a smart footballer!!

I was listening to the commentary yesterday and Mooney was talking about his endurance. He said something like, "You see him bent over with his hands on his head and think he's stuffed, but then he takes off again." They were marvelling at his capacity to just keep running.
Would be awesome to see him go on for two more years.

We might only have one premiership cup but we have been able watch some amazing players over the years, we are able to call our own.
