Let's Not Forget This On Sunday

Post: # 1633606Post Bruce G McAbee »

While there is speculation as to whether this will be Sam Fishers' last game or not, it will the last game Nick Reiwoldt captains St.Kilda.
Let's hope they can give him a big win to finish on. Thanks Roo.

You're going a bit early. I think I heard Rooey on the footy show Thursday deny he's said its his last game as captain

I really hope the club makes an agreement to keep him on as captain until he breaks the record and then hands over the reins mid next season to someone else

Because captaincy is all about personal milestones.

It's not about personal milestones but you hardly ever get to the point that you can break a record.

To achieve the record would be a wonderful acknowledgement of his amazing leadership.

In two years time handing over the Captaincy for 10 or so games will have little value.

In 5 years time, none whatsoever. To be introduced as the longest serving Captain for the rest of your life is a fantastic accolade that opens doors and sets the tone. He deserves that for his commitment and sacrifice. I am a little confused that people can't see that. Good clubs do not miss an opportunity to improve their circumstances or the circumstance of their people.

YES ... I want to see him break the record. He's good enough to lead us again in 2017. Can you change captains mid year? maybe when he breaks the record - hand over the baton. He's that close to beating the record I say go for it.

Off topic but didn't want to start a new thread - although the season doesn't end till the final siren of our game tomoz, I'm already out of footy mode lol. Turned on Cats/Dees game for a few minutes on free to air but switched off - couldn't be bothered. Hating Geebung is a factor too. Am watching stream of Niners/ Pack pre season game

Oh and I hope Roo skippers next season and right up to when he retires

Does anyone know what is going on with Fisher?

I am kind of surprised we havent had a press conference this week for him.

Why does everyone want to retire Fisher -he has been very serviceable this year and he is still ahead of Lee or Delaney.
With Goddard out for most of next year we will still need backup for injuries.
I think he could go again even if as a rookie!

No wants to see him retire. I think the speculation is that he hasn't been replaced yet. Somehow retiring him is intended to speed that up.

Insider tony74 said quite clearly in response to one wag asking about drafting Brent Harvey,
that "we are looking to rookie an old-timer"
We did it with Schneider... but can you only do it if you have a guy on LTI long term injury ?

No need for Fisher to retire, don't know if we're going to secure a key defender and the start of Goddard's season will be delayed. I reckon theres still an important spot on the list for Chips.

I also think changing Skipper is premature. Give Roo another year and see what Weller & Newnes may offer after another year.

We can do it, but we would have to delist him first, them select him as a Rookie in the draft after he nominates. Always a risk as he is technically available to anyone before we select him. But as with Schneider, I think it will work out OK.

He sort of looked like he believed it might be his last game, didn't he - the way he snuck down and took that shot for goal?

The way Richo spoke in the presser you got the impression that the senior blokes all knew where they stood, but that some of them might be waiting on what happens in the draft/trade period.

The way Chips launched himself at the ball it seemed to me he was strongly making the case that's his body's worth another go round. There was was one bump on a Brisbane forward that literally echoed around Etihad and he bounced up and off he went.

I'd love to keep him around the club next year, and I don't care if it's a rookie spot. Not because I think its 2009, but because that experience as a back up for the new blokes like DMac and White is invaluable. The Schneids/Lonie example is a good one.

Also, in that same presser, Richo seemed to me to dial back the "Roo is definitely being replaced" message we've all been fed the last few week.

It made me very hopeful we'll do something creative to get him to the record. If he's co-captain or captain for the required number of games that won't trouble anyone.

Not one person at St Kilda thinks he doesn't deserve that honour. As has been said elsewhere, we have a pretty thin trophy cabinet at Moorabbin.

Never more was that in sharper relief as I lined up with the kids on Saturday to buy some gear after open training and we spent a good twenty minutes in the queue outside one of those trophy cabinets. I'd like to see our Ansett Cup premiership take a back seat to a bloody great picture of Roo with the all-time captaincy record.

We should do what what can to ensure he's elevated to the AFL Hall of Fame as a legend. Harder to do if you haven't skippered a premiership team or won a Brownlow. This might help.

And the fact that he'd knock off Sticks is just an added bonus.
