Pressure Points - How are they measured?
Just read this on the club website in the Monday Wash-Up :
"Ross finished with a game-high 34 possessions – 2nd highest tally of his career – a game-high six clearances, six tackles, six inside 50s and the most pressure points on the ground at 51.8 points"
Anyone know how they arrive at 51.8 points? It's a very specific measurement to go to decimal points. How do they measure pressure points?

Re: Pressure Points - How are they measured?
The points system is a key tool for clubs and awards appropriately weighted points for each of the four 'pressure acts'.
Points are awarded for corralling (1.2), chasing (1.5), closing (2.75) and physical pressure (3.75).
The impact of physically influencing a contest is seen over 3 times as critical as just corralling an opponent who can still get a clean disposal away.
Saints were 3rd in the comp for pressure points prior to this round. Probably not 3rd for overall skill and player depth! Helps explain when the pressure game isn't brought how there can be big shifts in performance i.e. - interstate trips this year.

It's quite simple. Let x be the number of tackles, y the number of contested possessions and z the size of his underpants. A weighted average is then done by taking away the number that you first thought of and adjusting for seasonal variations.

Thanks Foz. Very interesting. How do you know all that?Foz wrote:The points system is a key tool for clubs and awards appropriately weighted points for each of the four 'pressure acts'.

And jaysus there must be an army of stats guys at every game. With the pace of the game and the numbers around the ball, imagine being responsible for recording all that.

Re: Pressure Points - How are they measured?
they simply count up all the stud marks a player has made that fall within 25cms of an opponents stud marks, and divide by 18. it's why players are all made to wear the same number of studs on their boots. in the early days all boots had unique nodges cut into them as identifiers and after the game apprentice statisticians would forage the ground with pen and notepad tallying them all up. if you didn't step with enough pressure to imprint the ground you would miss the tally- hence the name pressure points.
nowadays of course the boots all have digital receptors that transmit this data immediately to a computer where the calculations are made on the fly.
