I was always of the mind that ROo should have abdicated at least last year - but when I heard he was so close to the record I want him to break it
Lets face it his accolades will always be "self" related when it was certain he would never be part of a GF winning team

Would "co-captain" stll make him eligible for the record - if so Geary and Roo would be my vote
Leadership from the bookends...

I'm curious why you and others think Gears when he will be 29 next year?

It's hard to say without having inside knowledge of the dynamics within the group. Jack S did so well stepping up and can be inspirational, Seb seems steady, mature and articulate, Jack N mentally and physically robust it seems. Gears probably great too. If Paddy was a few years older and had proved himself to be physically durable enough I could see him in a leadership role too.

He seems a type you would follow into battle, but not knowing how he sits in the team dynamic who can say?

I seem to remember him being mic'd up earlier this year? And his play calling and direction to teammates was pretty great.
Must be question marks on captaincy given he is 29 next year and skills are middling, though his endeavour cannot be questioned.

Pretty easy to have a 50:50 stab in the dark that a 34 year old wouldn't be skipper next year.

We could have 2 captains of the midfield

And... I think we need to appoint a couple of generals in the backline

And while we're at it, how about 2 majors in the forward line with a corporal ready and willing to take on the major role

Sorry forgot this was a serious thread. Seriously it would be in the clubs interest to have mutiple leaders or dual captains and perhaps even rotating dual captains for at least the next 2 years

Jacks, Newnes and Steven, as Captain and 2IC respectively.

Newnes is better at the media stuff and Steven is better at leading by example, so I propose Newnes as our public face, since he is highly regarded internally and has taken the next step as a player now.

Co-captains is the way to go I reckon. That way sticks can be struck off the history books. And it would be great for Montagna to be the other co-captain just for one year. Then from 2018 I would give the captaincy to Newnes.

thats easy in threefold
# he deserves it as a leader and club stalwart
# it gives the club some breathing space as to who exactly will be there in two years
# 2 old @ 29 ? - I dont think anyone under 26 deserves it

Co-captain shouldn't make a difference as far as I'm aware - Roo was co-captain in 2007 with Luke Ball and Lenny, and this seems to have still counted towards his overall number of captained games.

desertsaint wrote:when did Roo say that. terrible move by the club if so - get the record and then ass it over or have co-captains. no one really ready to replace him anyway. give jack s a bit more time then him to warm the seat for dustan well down the track.
Announced a couple of days ago and Richo confirmed today in his media statement below:

http://www.saints.com.au/video/2016-08- ... son-19-aug

Rooey will mentor next captain.

Everyone on this thread is sitting on the fence which shows me that Richo is correct in that there are 3/4 good choices but not a standout.

For me its Mav

Geary strikes me (at this distance) as the only likely candidate who possesses the manically ridiculous obsessions for success at all costs.

Not an overly naturally talented player, he understands hard work, and he naturally leads verbally and by demonstration on the pitch. He speaks brilliantly in the media, and he's 100% tough.

Give Geary a couple of years. Then you hand it over to Jack Newnes.

Let's face it, St Kilda haven't got much to crow about. We've got the most wooden spoons, one flag in god knows how many years, a few brownlow medalists and on the wrong end of wins for and against most clubs plus probably on the wrong end of some highest/lowest scores.

The only thing we are currently holding is the goal kicking record by Lockett (shared with Sydney).

Let Roo either be co-captain or sole captain next year and break that Kernalhand's record and then he can hand it on to Jackie Boy! You know it makes sense. It would a great accolade for a stalwart of the club and a great clubman.

As ex-president Peter Summers said:
“If we are going to be a contender, we may as well plan to win the bloody thing.”

Yes. A simple solution. Name him captain first 11 games and Jack the second 12 and the finals.

Won't hurt for Nick to be captain again in 2017. I just want him to beat Kernahan's record. At least in future years he can be introduced as "AFL's longest serving captain." Stay on Nick - and then 2018 we can have another captain.

[quote="lintonstreet"]Big challenge for the CLUB and the playing group as no-one is standing out/quote]

When you have strong leadership over a long period there tends to be a power vacuum. When Riewoldt eventually does finish up someone will emerge as an obvious replacement. But until then I favour rotating it, so we are not potentially stuck with a dud.

Does the whole club revolve around Roo breaking records?
The Saints should never be a vanity project for one bloke.
Time to move on imo.

I'm struggling to understand everyone commenting that Roo should remain as captain?

HE"S NOT FOLKS, TIME TO FOCUS ON THE FUTURE.

Still not many nominations for our next captain which is either saying we have a number in the mix or no-one.

well , after listening to that Richo presser
i'd say the decision is already made.

... they might even appease the keep Roo set with a years co-captaincy
which would work.

hmmmmm ... roll on season17 :)
... i'm bored with the cricket already.
