Some respect please Citywest for a bloke who has been a great warrior for us over many seasons. I don't know if Fisher wants to go on. The ability is still there for sure, but his body is beginning to let him down.

He made s few early mistakes , kept deadbolt to 1 point. Correct selection....
Is likely his last season with Carlise comming in but at least let him go out with some respect.
His intercept play still is a grade.

Just prior to his last hammy he said in the Social Club that he wanted to play on next season, but that it was up to the club.

He would certainly be a good depth player if he was around next year , but the queries really are whether his body can hold out and whether he would be happy playing in the 2s until required.

Let's no forget we are currently at near full strength. It was only a couple of years ago when we had half our starting backline sidelined with injury. Carlisle is only 1 player and we dont know how or when Hughie will be back to full fitness. I'd be dropping Delaney off the list for Carlisle. Hurley would change the equation however.

He's better than depth. Still a very good player, but yes, mid-30s and a recent history of hamstring problems will be the query.

What this season has shown is that we have improved to the level of not being too far off the mark (allowing for the Interstate results).

But we have deficiencies which are glaring, the principal among which is the reliance on Dempster, Gilbert and Roberton as our tall defensive options, confronting the range of forwards including Kennedy, Franklin, Hogan, Lynch, Cameron, Patton, Brown, Petrie et al.

We improve that area by having Carlisle available and by Goddard's eventual return, noting Goddard is developing and has only played a handful of games.

Fisher's importance was confirmed by, after a lengthy absence, his immediate recall after 1 VFL game for match conditioning - and then taking Casboult who he contained as we would expect from such a class performer.

That importance will continue into 2017 given Fisher feels he can continue to contribute as he has in 2016.

What we then have is 2 proven KPP defenders - and allow for Goddard's recovery and introduction to AFL football.

The "spread" then allows each of Dempster, Gilbert and Roberton to play in positions they are more suited to - including adding Gilbert to the mid-field rotations where hopefully Freeman and others can also be added.

If deference needs to be paid to "week in and week out" footy then that can be managed against the appropriate opposition (and Inter-state matches?) when responsibility can be again given to Dempster, Gilbert and Roberton.

To me, Fisher is a "keep" for 2017.

The other deficiency to me is the ruck role in support of Hickey - and hopefully Longer can put in a full pre season and then contribute to his full potential in 2017.

Fisher has been a great player but his time has passed. He is 34 and his body is failing him. With the introduction of Carlisle we more than have the key defensive posts covered. Just have a look at how well Geelong have managed to phase out their oldies. St Kilda are on the way up and I would hope that the oldies are phased out a year early rather than a year too late.

Lonergan 32
Taylor 30
Mackie 32
Enright 35

And the first and last time I'll ever bother responding to your idiocy.

How old is Bartel as well? Not to mention Hawthorn's best players are pretty much all 30+...

Players playing into their mid 30's is the new norm.

While the OP is a tactless sentiment, it is actually correct.

Been an absolute great for us, at one point, the best backman in the league, with freakish capacity to read the ball coming in.....but, father time has caughtup and even though the mind is still quick, the legs are slow....too slow.

Will announce retirement as soon as we are out of finals contention I would think

Yeah, he does look a little cooked... Just don't want him to get the bums rush out the door if he still feels he can be a depth player next season. Champion player. A little more time on the sand belt courses for Chips Fisher. Work on the handicap.

There's a huge difference between suggesting a veteran retire at the end of the year and posting during the first quarter that we should get rid of him right now.

Premature to say the least, Citywest. Blurt first, try to justify yourself later. You get criticized plenty on this forum but, geez mate, you certainly lead with your chin!

Exactly. KFT is on the money Citywest.

If you post stuff with a title like the OP in this thread, how do you expect people to respond?
