How dare you SainterK! What are some on here going to complain about now? Next you'll be telling me Geary's about fifth at the saints for overall disposal efficiency. You lie, young lady! Anyone else see the connection between kicking better and winning more.

I'd like to know more about this 'disposal efficiency' stat.
Surely it's one of these stats that sounds like what you'd expect it to be, but when you actually read the definition of what they're recording, it's actually quite different.
Like 'contested possessions'.

Our kicking at goal is still average !
Many of our wins this year have been by small margins .
The bulldogs game is a good example .
We were a 5 goal better team on the day yet it wasn't reflected in the end score .

Pinched from online somewhere:
Clangers are direct turnovers.
Effective disposals are made up of effective long kicks, effective short kicks and effective handballs. An effective long kick is one that is 40 metres to a 50/50 or better for the team. An effective short kick is one that results in a teammate's possession who was the intended target of the kicker. A handball to a teammate that hits the intended target to the team's advantage is recorded as an effective handball.
On face value, to be doing well in this stat is great.
But obviously it can be misleading.
For example, our system of playing on constantly with handball would result in an effective disposal each time. Unless of course we miss a handball target from 2m away! Our system of switching play to uncontested players in our D50 would also bump our effective disposal count.
The other obvious flaw in this stat, is that it counts a kick to a 50/50 contest as effective - even if it should have actually hit the forward on the tit! Even though it was an easy pass to a leading forward that you stuffed up and as a result it ended up being a 50/50 contest - it's considered an effective disposal. If Reiwoldt is 10m clear on the lead and you grub it to him instead of hitting him lace out - as long as it doesn't result in a direct turnover, it's considered effective.
Also worth noting is that we're 2nd highest in the comp for our opponents disposal efficiency. Not sure what to make of that.

Re: This is NOT oh so St Kilda
Just on the topic of misleading stats:
Contested Possession:
Champion Data defines a contested possession as a statistic ''credited to a player who wins the ball from a disputed situation''.
A player's contested possession tally is the sum of his hard-ball gets, loose-ball gets, contested marks, free kicks for, gathers from hitouts and ''contested knock-ons''.
When I hear the term 'contested footy', I assume it relates to a one on one (or worse) contest that you win. A genuine ball that is in dispute - and you beat your man and get the pill for your team.
But it's not. It includes any scenario really, where the ball is not in anyone's possession. Hence 'loose ball gets' somehow being considered a contested footy.

You can make stats say whatever you want them to!
Just like plebiscites, depending on the question, or definition.

There is no doubt that the Hawks have won some close games this year because they used the ball better than the opposition by foot - even though they had less of it.
