Perhaps the people accusing him of list clogging are forgetting how much experience and toughness he brings to the team.

I'll buy in.

Geary gives 100% - at times to the risk of self and team mates.

BUT, if you pencil in a St Kilda team that challenges consistently for the premiership by being consistent finals participants, then Geary is not in that side.

His disposal, his decision making, his positioning around the contest and his speed are the issues.

The fact that he is a liability with the ball has been in evidence since since he debuted - and he has not improved.

If you take the trouble to watch the pre match warm ups you will see the problem - he has no knee straightening punch thru ball when kicking hence his kicks are up and under even during the warm ups - and, when he is under pressure during a game the problem is accentuated including because he can not kick distance - and can not get an effective kick away quickly.

Hence he is always under the spotlight when he has the ball - and hearts are in mouths because the consistent prospect of the ball not being transitioned to the advantage of team is always very high.

His boot meeting the ball is fairy floss stuff.

A good servant of the Club - but NOT the future.

Given the name of the game in AFL is to turn, turn and then turn again to put together the side you want representing you, then turn again to improve that side Geary is one for the turning.

He is 182cm and 82kg - and there are lots of candidates with those statistics, many more than 194cm and 95kg.

That also is a problem for him.

He is run of the mill size, playing as a flanker and the competition is hot (in all sides) so we have to match the best of the opposition to achieve the advantage we must, as a team, have.

That is why you keep turning your players - the competition demands it.

Just on R. Clarke as a comparison, he positioned around the contest particularly well, also directing.

His ball usage was very good creating opportunity (putting the ball out in front of Roo is a Prelim v Footscray for the winning goal).

Plus, with his height, he could hold down CHB as he did in a Prelim v Port Adelaide and as he did in WA giving Pavlich a lesson.

No comparison to Geary.

No-one's saying you're an idiot or attacking you personally. Several posters, including myself, just think your OP was really harsh on Geary. Richo seems to rate him. He was fifth in our B&F last year. That doesn't support the idea that he's a list clogger. Hope you change your mind.

Have just watched the game albeit on my phone which aint ideal, but I just can't understand why people bag Gears, today he had a good game, he passed the ball well put a good clamp on Rioli, had a clanger which cost us a goal but possibly a teammate or two could've helped prevent that. Put plenty of pressure on the opposition, yes it was a good game by Gears today.

I think you kind of missed the point. I wasn't comparing them as players... Merely pointing out a similarity between them. Like Raph had his brain fades which just kept popping up again and again... Geary's good work is consistently being undermined by howling disposal errors at times.

It's an issue that's not going to go away until either
A) he fixes his disposal
B) we get a player that can do the same job but with better disposal

Spot on and I said as much in another thread for he brings a lot of hard arse courageous qualities to the team that a lot of younger guys can be inspired by and learn from.

He will play 150 for us but probably miss out on notching up 200 games if a few others come on

I was really critical of Geary a few weeks ago, specifically his disposal, particularly by foot. There were a few games were his disposal was terrible bordering on negligent.

To Geary's credit, it appears he indentified that himself and has been mindful of it since. Gone are the pointless sub 5 metre foot passes, and he appears to be more focused on execution, including ball drop.

Good on him for bouncing back and kicking a couple.

Good ordinary player, tough as old boots but needs to make way to give a potential champion a go. Maybe play him off the bench at best.
