Does anyone else find Richo boring???
My wife who doesnt watch much footy but is a very astute judge of people and has seen a few of Richo's pressers. Last weekend she comes out with do you think 'he is the sharpest tool in the shed'?
After giving it some consideration I tend to agree. His pressers and interviews are all the same non inspiring monotone boring comments. Like -
"If we are strong at the contest well get the results"
"Strong thru the middle"
"Yeah he did ok I was happy with his effort"
"No excuses they are a good team"
"Yeah yeah we dont travel well thats something as a group we will have to have a real good look at".
Never once do you hear him go on the front foot and challenge his team like Clarko did in the media during the week. Clarko is the greastest modern coach in the AFL, but it would be nice to see Richo go on the front foot occasionally. Go outside his weekly routine and show his real displeasure after a flogging other than looking like someone without the answers.
I know the same could be said of Longmire, but with him you always get a sense of his intense competiveness, which you dont see in Richo. There never seems to be a sense of expectation with, just someone going through the motions.
I cant recall ever seeing Richo look or sound excited or stimulated - I wonder if he is like that around the club.
He is obviously a solid and well respected football person but I question his motivational abilities, his spark or IQ to produce anything other than meat & potatoes football, selections and results?
If you had a term to describe Richo what would it be? For me it would be - steady, reliable, loyal, boring, battler but never brilliant or exciting or a great motivator of people.
It almost like he has become so used to being the coaching support crew at clubs - he has never developed that inate motivational drive the great coaches have. He is just not an interesting person to listen to IMO!
And before you start frothing at the mouth I dont want him sacked - but I do think the club needs to look at his support staff eg assistants and media training.

No, not at all. He is a very articulate man and I am very happy and proud he is St Kilda's senior coach.

Re: Does anyone else find Richo boring???
Let's face it, Richo has all the charm of a suburban caravan park, but that's not always the most important thing. He is very different behind closed doors and is a good in the relationships department, from what I've been told. The media performances are usually cliched and cautious. He's not alone there. I remember a great St.Kilda coach who was as dull as dishwater in the media. His name was Allan Jeans. I had the pleasure of knowing and working with him and he was very different in private. He loved taking the piss with the media, with a steady stream of homespun cliches. "Just happy to get the four points, "players are like sausages", "each player has two arms and two legs" and my favourite, " the team that wins the most contests and makes the fewest mistakes usually wins". Classic stuff. Hopefully Richo can emulate Yabby in the flag winning department.
I started with nothing and I've got most of it left!

You obviously missed seeing him after the Melbourne game last year and the Geelong game this year.

"Positive" comes out as often as a selfie from Kim Kardashian.
Severely overused and flogged to death.
Boringly regular.

Re: Does anyone else find Richo boring???
He's media persona appears very measured and composed. A good thing.
He has years of experience and knows what to say and what buttons to push.
Players seem to like him a lot.
He is good for the club as far as I'm concerned.
He appears no better or worse than any of the other coaches.
What are your expectations? A burlesque dance with a cast of midgets and showgirls!
Negative post.

Re: Does anyone else find Richo boring???
Love him. Love his pressers. Love the way he scratches his head or his neck on the curly questions.
Seriously, what do you want? He's our coach; he's not auditioning for Dennis Commeti's gig on Friday night footy.
I find him pleasingly, positively, strong as a media performer. Long may he dissemble.

Re: Does anyone else find Richo boring???
The thing is, think of the last few ppl that would really put things out there to the media...
GT comes to mind as a person gave the media a few headlines at pressers, and I know he wasn't a coach but Jeff Kennett got your attention too.
The media chopped them up

Yeah, nah, he is very pleasing.
As ex-president Peter Summers said:
“If we are going to be a contender, we may as well plan to win the bloody thing.”
St Kilda - At least we have a Crest!

Knows his footy.
Well respected by the club on and off the field.
Has a very good understanding of leadership and what that looks like within a footy club.
That's all that matters.

The press conferences are FOR people that aren't the sharpest tool in the shed. Occasionally, one of them notices.Impatient Sainter wrote:My wife who doesnt watch much footy but is a very astute judge of people and has seen a few of Richo's pressers. Re: Does anyone else find Richo boring???
In this world of instant social media "outrage" coaches and politicians know it is safer to say nothing to the media other than standard monologues.
Richo speaks really well at club functions.

Re: Does anyone else find Richo boring???
I wish he was more quirky. I like weirdo, strange talking, borderline autistic coaches. It shows their minds are working away constantly in the deeper part of their brains trying to develop game tactics to give them an edge.

So you think that under handed swipe is quirky, intellegent or witty. It just puts you in the 'knob' status.satchmo wrote:The press conferences are FOR people that aren't the sharpest tool in the shed. Richo needs to remember he is the main face of the Saints and he needs to sell the club to the wider audience. Ive seen a few of his TV takes when he giving his pre game delivery and half the team look asleep, he gets the same response from the media and the general public.
Before you reply with some other rubbish, contact a few non Saints people and ask them what they think about Richo's media persona and whether he strikes them as a strong motivator?
Have you heard any of the media since the GCS game, they speak of the Saints interstate perfomances as comical. With our record interstate you would think Richo would want to publicly challenge the team, because everything he had tried in the past had failed dismally!
