Re: Squad vs Essendon
Luke Dunstan
Amazing really
His level of opportunity for substandard output is mind boggling!!!
As a mid/forward
18 Ppg (poor)
8 contested possessions (below average)
7 kicks (poor)
2 goals 8 behinds for the season (poor)
0 bounces as a midfielder
5 tackles per game (above average)
With Seb and Armo and our obvious inability on the outside
We continue to have 4 clearance specialists with only one of those able to line break. Luke runs like he is in soft sand which is why his handball ratio is so high... He cannot get away with the ball and needs to dispose before tackled.
He has played good games, but like Mitch Marsh if you give him enough games eventually he'll play a good one. He has played 13 games with many midfield minutes but has hit 20 touches 3 times and 10 kicks once.
I'd like to know how Minchington, Templeton or Acres would go afforded the same minutes upfield instead of being stuck as a small forward?!
As it is Blake has Equalled or bettered Luke anyway
Having played 8 games he has 3 times hit 20 (inc 28)
Has kicked more goals
Has a better kick/HB ratio
And IMO has had 4 elite level quarters to one from Luke

Yes Tommy Lee is in some trouble. Maybe Richo as tough straight down the line aussie rules footy player hated the spandex big hair nightmare that was Motley Crue.
With Lee out Dempster would have to be his replacement - named on the field too of course. Roo named forward so I'm going to guess Eli gets a run.

Generally the fault of Lee and/or Minchington and/or Acres when the whole team plays pathetically like last week.

I want Savage, Acres, Pierce and Wright. Nath showed a bit of zip in that game he got hurt.

Re: Squad vs Essendon
I think you are spot on with those 4. Wright did so well with his attack on the footy in the previous 2 games, that he must come back in , replacing Lonie. Pierce replaces Paddy to really exploit the Bombers losing two talls, Dempster already is in the 18 replacing Lee. Templeton must be close to selection, and might grab Blacres' spot , but I think -and hope - that will not happen. No disrespect to Eli, but Blake deserves a run of games.WellardSaint wrote:I want Savage, Acres, Pierce and Wright. Nath showed a bit of zip in that game he got hurt.

Re: Squad vs Essendon
Bombers defenders aren't elite; James Gwilt, much as I love what he gave us, is now in his twilight.
Not fast, and seems to panic a bit.
Pierce will do well against the Bombers, and can learn a bit. If he plays against Dogs and Swans, his confidence will be shattered.

Re: Squad vs Essendon
I'd definitely be giving more opportunities at the clearances to Acres and Gresham particularly. Nothing against Dunstan. He's a solid in and under as is Armo. But they are a little similar in the way they operate.BigMart wrote:Luke Dunstan

Re: Squad vs Essendon
'in and under' is the old terminolgy for a contested ball winner. He only averges about 7 CPs per game. His nuggety appearance may suggest he should win a lot of contested ball - but thats a perception. Reality is that he id not getting his hands on the footy enough. We need more breakaway speed at stoppages, he provides little spread.

Re: Squad vs Essendon
FWIW, i think Dunstan often gets tasked with negating/defensive roles at stoppage, ie positioning and blocking run, making strong body contact and being a pjhysical presence around clearances. I think he is obviously doing his 'role' for him to be selected even when his outright numbers don't stand out. I personally and am glad he is getting continuity to build his engine...he is clearly going to be a 'diesel' bull in another season or 2 able to run all day and get to contest after contest. For him accumulating games is part of that process!BigMart wrote:'in and under' is the old terminolgy for a contested ball winner. He only averges about 7 CPs per game. But like all players, h shouldn't be immune from getting dropped if his performance internally is below where it needs to be.
Re: Squad vs Essendon
The worry is the fact he has not progressed from his debut season
We all got excited when a first year mid was able to average 17 and 5 tackles and win contested ball...
Because we assume that as he progressed he would be a 25ppg player after a few years and ultimately a near 30 man
Because with his carry and disposal as a midfielder... Only 30ppg would put him at A Grade

Ross barely showed any improvement for 4 years with his numbers, then just exploded this year.
Dunstan is 21 years old, it's only his 3rd season of AFL footy and is still working towards 50 games.

I am surprised Lewie has not made the 22. As you say, would have been a great experience . Clearly Hickey can take on the inexperienced Don talls on his own, but with Paddy out DMac did not seem the obvious replacement. Clearly there will be a reshuffle . Roo more forward ? Maybe Gilbert ?WellardSaint wrote:Bombers defenders aren't elite; James Gwilt, much as I love what he gave us, is now in his twilight.

With Wright and McKenzie both in that adds two quick hard nuts.
Overall it is a very well balanced team.
We should have a good day out!

They have placed Roo at CHF and last time we played one tall forward short Roo also played more in his traditional key forward role. I xpect the same this week.
