Paddy
Can't remember a young player having so many concussion issues. Is he just unlucky or should we be concerned?
Our future prospects revolve around him. I'm personally realy worried for him and us.

Re: Paddy
Huge concern.
How does this guy survive a 10 year, 200 game career??
You can't change he way he plays, as a key forward he still needs to attack to ball in the air. But geez, your brain only has so many hits it can take before you need to pull the pin.

Re: Paddy
Can it be something to do with his diabetes by any chance? Maybe he gets tired and more open to big hits? They are much tougher on the concussion stuff these days too - you have to pass complicated tests. If Jonno Brown was playing now you wonder if he would be stopped from playing with concussion

Re: Paddy
Put him in cotton wool for the year.
Run him through another preseason - needs to lose puppy fat and build a tank.
Do a series of tests, see how it can be fixed/mended.
Buy him a helmet.
Coleman next year

Re: Paddy
If playing in a helmet was good enough for Nathan Burke it should be good enough for Paddy.
Shame he got another knock, probably doesn't know where he is but neither do most of his team mates

Re: Paddy
Too many more whacks and he'll have to give it away like the Brisbane Lions Full Back did.
The Saints are under review, will it make any difference to the underachievers ?

Re: Paddy
i feel he loses his awareness in the plays at times. People call it courage however needs to be more aware of whats around.. i know easier said then done however goes to a contest in the same way riewoldt does however cops that hit too many times. Another 5-6 games like that almost career over.

Could explain why he has is having some of these collisions and getting impacted quite heavily. If he is startting to get a bit out of it or losing coordination.Hypoglycemia describes an abnormally low level of sugar (glucose) in the blood. Hypoglycemia is not a disease in itself, rather it is a sign of a health problem.
The brain needs a continuous supply of glucose to function because it can neither store nor manufacture glucose.
The typical signs of low sugar levels include hunger, trembling, heart racing, nausea, and sweating. Hypoglycemia is commonly linked with diabetes, but many other conditions can also cause low blood sugar.
In this article, we will discuss the causes, diagnosis, and treatment of hypoglycemia. We will also look at ways of preventing it from occurring.
Symptoms of hypoglycemia
One of the early symptoms of hypoglycemia is excess sweating.
Early signs and symptoms of mild hypoglycemia usually include:
Hunger
Tremor (trembling/shakiness)
Sweating
Anxiety
Irritability
Pallor (face goes pale)
Heart palpitations
Accelerated heart rate
Tingling lips
When the hypoglycemia is more severe, the following signs or symptoms may occur:
Concentration problems
Confusion
Irrational and disorderly behavior (similar to somebody who is drunk)
Seizures (uncommon)
Loss of consciousness (uncommon)
Coma (uncommon)

Re: Paddy
How about being a number one forward in the u18s, where only a few can be inside the forward line? Maybe he's not use to the congestion. Plus it's our own men knocking him out...let Paddy go for the ball and get out the fkn way! Pretend he's Plugger.

He copped an accidental knee in the back of the head from one of our guys in a marking contest. Nothing to do with lack of awareness or crap like that. Could've happened to anyone

Did the hardest thing in football, when back with the flight without flinching and was cleaned up by friendly fire.stevie wrote:He copped an accidental knee in the back of the head from one of our guys in a marking contest. Just needs to be rested for a couple or as long as he needs.

Re: Paddy
While what you're saying is true, that the hits can't be helped in some situations (such as today's incident), it seems that anytime he gets *any* contact to the head, it results in concussion (or at least concussion-like symptoms). I'm not a doctor but that is incredibly concerning and you have to wonder how the diabetes factors into this. There HAS to be a correlation because, as everyone is saying, hits to the head are part of being a key position forward (ear massages, anyone?) and the fact that every little one is sidelining him is unusual. Three concussions in 15 rounds of Footy is unusual (and he's only played, what, 6/7/8 of those 15?).
I say put a helmet on him anyway. Even if it doesn't help...it can't hurt, right?!

But the knock has to be inducing the symptoms, right? Because it's not happening randomly throughout the game- only after a heavy knock. Perhaps the diabetes makes him more susceptible to concussion or worsens the symptoms?Impatient Sainter wrote:Tend to agree has to be related....doesnt it?sunsaint wrote:it was a nothing knockBluthy wrote:Can it be something to do with his diabetes by any chance? I wish the club were more honest with this. Journos have alluded to the fact that it's not as "under control" as the club makes it seem...I think the supporters have a right to know whether our #1 draft pick is suffering repeat concussions (which is the story we have right now and is very troubling) or whether it's a completely separate issue relating to his diabetes? With what we now know about concussion, it'd almost have to be preferable that it was diabetes-related as that can be corrected and won't impact his long-term health (beyond what his initial long-term diagnosis was).
That being said, there is research to suggest why he is getting concussed after every knock (which isn't diabetes-related).
"Once a person has had a concussion, he or she is as much as four times more likely to sustain a second one. Moreover, after several concussions, it takes less of a blow to cause the injury and requires more time to recover." - http://www.medicinenet.com/script/main/ ... ekey=13166
Re: Paddy
We don't really know though if he is really getting concussed in these incidents or if he is getting a whack on the head (being a fearless huge forward diving into packs), holding his head, going off to get checked (he ran off the field without any problems) and then the doctors being conservative and saying no you aren't going back out and hence its officially tagged as "failing concussion test". If this was 5 years ago perhaps he comes straight back on and there is no mention of concussion and this issue doesn't even come up.4ever_saint wrote:But the knock has to be inducing the symptoms, right? I do wonder if being a big brute as junior he's just used to being able to back into packs and pushing them all aside without any consequences. I thought it was actually a poor decision for him to dive into the pack today - he wasn't really anywhere close to taking the mark and diving backwards into an oncoming pack is really dangerous. A little more discrimination of when to put his noggin in harms way may be a smart move. You don't want to take away his instinct to get the footy at all costs but hopefully as he becomes a smarter AFL player he'll realise the times to go and times it doesn't make much sense to be so reckless.
