Playing for your Career
There are a few guys playing for their careers this Sunday.
Without Carlisle, Fisher, Dempster and Goddard , defenders Lee and Delaney get the chance to show why they should not be cut at season's end.
I am sure they both would appreciate the midfielders winning or a least breaking even.
The pair don't want the ball coming down field at them with no pressure on the kicker.
Bruce is not going to be used as backup ruckman this week, he will be permanently in the forward line, so giving Pierce a chance to show what he has.

Re: Playing for your Career
Agree with your post...
I hate that it comes down to this though. So Lee gets his 3rd game in 2 years and is playing for his career whilst there are other players that get gifted a lot more but somehow escape the pressure.
One thing I think we're the best club at is setting guys up to fail.
Personally I think both of Lee and Delaney should have each played 10 or so games more each in the last 2 years and we'd have more info to make a proper call as opposed to looking at Lee's two ok games this season and saying yep he's not up to it.
The protocol should look more like what they're doing with Minch. Was given a run of games, was dropped, forced his way back in and gets another chance... Rinse, repeat.

Tend to agree. The coach is desperate for Lee to fail so he can say 'see I told you so.'skeptic wrote:Agree with your post...

Lee gets two games against top 6 opposition - GWS and Hawks - then gets dropped after two x 5/10 games

Meanwhile Roberton gets injured and rushed straight back in to the side. Has two good games versus bottom 8 sides and has three x 2/10 games and one 3/10 game but gets picked automatically anyway.

The fact the coach didn't give Lee a chance versus Collingwood, Melbourne, Essendon and Freo speaks volumes. Couldnt have him playing a good game could we.
And dont even start me on Gilbo

"The coach is desperate for Lee to fail" sheesh if I'd known you had such a skill at predictions Con tell me tonight's lotto numbers are. Just when you think people couldn't possibly be more stupid, someone manages to rise to the occasion.
Congratulations!!!
Congratulations!!!

You can certainly argue that AR has NOT given Lee every opportunity, nor the leniency that he has granted some others.

Coaches shouldn't have favourites.
What sort of message does that send to the others who aren't his pets?
It just spoils the whole idea of 'team" when he makes out he treats all equally, but his actions prove otherwise.
Double standards. You can't drop Acres for breaking 2 team rules and keep Gilbo and others who stuff up continually and do all sorts of silly decisions. "Oh, but we value their on-field leadership!"
What crock.

Re: Playing for your Career
Delaney was our best defender when we were down at the bottom of the ladder but others have surpassed him in recent years. The game has probably passed him but this might give him a kick up the backside to show why he should keep playing for us.
Lee has had a lot of chances but when he finally played a couple of good games he got dropped. I wish Tom all the best and I hope he plays a ripper few games until dempster and fisher are back.

Re: Playing for your Career
It's a backs to the wall game ...we are up against it for obvious reasons ..this will be a huge test of character for the whole club ..I think we have character we have seen it this year ...never say die character that's been missing lately..if we lose this game all we will here from the media is we have plateaued , stagnated ..game plan is no good etc but I believe we will win ..the youngsters will want to do it for the club and play good hard football. Re: Playing for your Career
When you have the recent win/loss record that St Kilda has and you are looking to improve team performance the spotlight is on every player - and perhaps, just perhaps there is too much focus on the Captain to bring a "feel good" story the Club seem to be relying on at present.
I would put that, to play the REQUIRED part in a resurgence at St Kilda all of Roberton, Lee, Geary, Delaney, Savage, Webster, Membrey, Weller, Minchington and Wright of tomorrow's 22 are under pressure this week and every week they are selected (noting that, if they continue to be selected and the team is winning their chances are improved) - as are all those who are not in the 22 apart from Billings, Freeman, Carlisle, Riewoldt, Goddard, Fisher and Dempster,
That is the brutal assessment of where we sit and why.
Even given the injuries, anything other than a convincing win tomorrow is not negotiable - otherwise careers are marked and players are just treading water ahead of season's end.

Membrey had been our best forward for the last month, Savage and Weller have both had a very good year.To the top wrote:When you have the recent win/loss record that St Kilda has and you are looking to improve team performance the spotlight is on every player - and perhaps, just perhaps there is too much focus on the Captain to bring a "feel good" story the Club seem to be relying on at present.

Roberton, Geary and Webster have done more than enough to keep their spots.
The only ones I see playing for their careers in that group are Lee, Delaney, Minchington and Wright, and that's exactly why Richo is playing them!!!
