Half time. Sandy 8.7, werribee 7.8. Late goals to murdoch and simpkin.

Curren, minch effective that qtr. Lee great goal though playing FB. Received free 70m out from out on full. Sprinted from opponent and slotted 50m from angle. Follow up play lonie from centre had clearance, hball off and back and slotted from 50m on run.

No holmes or sinclair.acres looks classy but made a few errors early.

Thanks Foz, was just about to ask about the 3 AFL emergencies. There's no change in the seniors so Sinclair & Holmes don't get a game this week.

Lonie is clearly a level above at VFL.

But maybe we leave him there for a few weeks as a mid so he can build the tank?

I'd agree, Acres needs to play the rest of the year in the ones. Development is key.

They need to give Lee a fair run at it in the seniors as well.

Needs a tank and a body. Bounces off AFL players like a pinball.

State league affiliate: Sandringham (VFL)
This weekend: Sandringham v Werribee - Sunday May 22, 2pm, Trevor Barker Beach Oval

Blake Acres, who was nominated for NAB AFL Rising Star in round six, responded to his omission by picking up 36 disposals.

Another dumped for the game against Essendon, Jack Lonie, finished with 28 disposals and bagged four goals.

Eli Templeton continued to push his case for a recall with 30 disposals while Darren Minchington had 21 disposals and two goals. Brodie Murdoch notched up 24 disposals and kicked a goal

Butchered the ball by both hand and foot. May have been trying too hard.

Sandringham’s efforts to keep the ball in the attacking forward 50 were faultless and they were rewarded.

Jack Lonie finished with four goals, including a snap around the body to seal it for Sandringham. But he wasn’t done there, again finding space and dribbling one through to make it a certainty.

An eight goal final quarter proved once again that a major strength of the Zebras is their ability to finish. As the season progresses this can only give them confidence that they can beat anyone, on any given day.

The spread of goal kickers (12) was highly pleasing for Sandringham.

Senior coach Paul Hudson praised the boys for having a crack and getting even at half time.

“Undisciplined acts early, we felt like we gave them some early goals. We managed to get it back to an even keel at half time, to the boys credit they started to crack in.”

A bye next week for Sandringham will give them a week’s rest as they prepare to face Geelong at Simonds Stadium.

and Developement game
One area Sandringham excelled in throughout the afternoon was keeping Williamstown at arm’s length. Every time the Seagulls kicked a goal, the Zebras would bounce back.

Nick Ebinger hit the scoreboard twice late in third quarter to level the game, only for Brenton Payne to kick a vital goal just before three-quarter time siren.

With the game poised for a nail biting finish, Sandringham showed their class to turn it into a non-contest. It was a complete annihilation, with the Zebras kicking 5.6 to Williamstown’s 1.3.

Zebras were getting loose and finding men free inside 50. Dobosz kicked goal of the afternoon when Kenny Ong broke through traffic from the pocket, got the handball out to Dobosz, who snapped true for a goal.

Josh Saunders found himself free out the back, waltzing into an open goal and condemning Williamstown to a 33-point defeat.

The boys will head into the bye with plenty of momentum. A clash with Coburg in two weeks awaits, as the Zebras continue their rise up the ladder.

Blake Acres still looks a little off being a regular seniors for mine after seeing him at Sandy. I tried to get a comparison with Jamie Cripps out of my head but it stuck - you know, great talent, creative, errant disposal at times. I would use that comparison at the same stage of their careers when Cripps was running around at Sandy.

Acres still looks a pre-season away from having an AFL body and there were a few moments where he lost his cool at opponents, lost focus etc. It probably explains why he was Rising Star and dropped a few weeks later. Probably the mental focus is key - you look at Seb Ross how he has flicked a switch this season and see what will come of 'Blakey'.

Huddo recognises the 3rd Quarter effort
http://www.sandringhamfc.com.au/news.aspx?id=522
Hudson was pleased with the third quarter efforts, which saw Sandringham dominate the inside 50s count 18-7 and amass 119 disposals despite kicking against the breeze.

“To hold them down was a credit to the defenders,” Hudson said.

“We shut them down in the third quarter. The difference was about three or four goals (wind wise), so we got it back to even, but it was that third quarter – with our defensive efforts and multiple stoppages.”

It was a sluggish start from the Zebras, who allowed Werribee to jump to a 26-point quarter time lead. Sandringham were punished for their poor ball use coming out of defensive, particularly early in the first quarter where two turnovers inside defensive 50 resulted in goals.

Sandringham gained the lead at half time, but needed to lift again in the third quarter. It was the response after the main break which had Hudson feeling satisfied about the result.

Sandringham has rebounded from last week’s loss to record an emphatic 37-point win over Werribee at Trevor Barker Beach Oval.

The visiting Tigers shot out of the blocks early, stunning the home side with the first four goals to lead by 26-points 12 minutes into the opening quarter.

The Zebras hit the scoreboard for the first time through ruckman Lewis Pierce, and then Eli Templeton kicked truly before the siren sounded for quarter-time, with a 26-point deficit and the challenge ahead for Sandringham.

Player breakdown
Blake Acres (38 disposals, 17 contested possessions, nine marks, seven clearances, six tackles, five inside 50s)

“Blake was our highest possession winner with 38 and he had six tackles too, so defensively he was good. He played in the midfield and on the wing, so we played him inside and outside. He was good; he just needs to be cleaner with his disposal efficiency.”
