I'm starting a new thread because I'm sick of seeing the title of the other thread on page 1, should have been buried a week ago.

So anyway, really liked his game and he presented well, I think he is just around the corner from at least kicking 3-4, if he gets another game where our midfield is on top.

In 1 half he kicked a goal, passed off a shot on goal, missed 1 and missed another while concussed. That's 4 opportunities in 1 half for a guy with 8 games to his name, could have clunked another I50 mark if he and Bruce didn't collide. Also our mids really only got the ball rolling in the 3rd when he was done for the day. Once he settles the nerves and kicks accurately he will be well worth his position in the draft.

He has a real shot against Melbourne and GWS in a couple weeks in what I feel we must win at least 1 for the teams confidence, but obviously hoping for the double.

Good to see a fresh thread started, particularly after his name was sullied by a forum troll.

That mark he took was very courageous. Paddy showed tremendous promise last Saturday. I think his AFL career is really nicely poised in order for it to starting flourishing this year.

He is a seriously beefy unit, almost Tony Lockett like. He'll be impossible to push off the ball once he's and more time in the gym and gotten his fitness up the the required level.

I'll repeat here, what I mentioned in the less impressively titled thread: If Jonathon Brown rates him, I'm happy with that - not that I needed Brown's imprimatur, but I do like a touch of confirmation bias, particularly from a plain speakin' man who doesn't get buried in management speak and jargon (hello, Dermot).

Further than Boyd, Watts, Franklin, Hogan, Kennedy, Riewoldt.J, Patton and a whole lot of other key forwards at the same stage and age?

Apart from Plugger, Brown and, more lately, Jeremy Cameron, how many big KP forwards have exploded in their 1st couple of years?

He'll get there, and I reckon it'll be quicker than most people think - mainly because he is a natural footballer, with smarts and a healthy dose of humility.

Plugger was one of best two players I've seen. Paddy will be very good. That pack grab spoke volumes about his attitude, courage and ability.

Not sure why people are making Lockett comparisons. Plugger is from an entirely different era of the game.

Paddy is only just about to turn 20 years old. That pack mark he took isn't a bad glimpse of what he is capable of doing on the football field. Two years from now he may be an absolute gun at AFL level. I quite like the odds of that happening.

reckon paddy is more of a natural footballer, Kennedy is a lunk (still a good natural footballer). Paddy's career will trend upwards sooner.

Putting down that dropped mark and holding the ball down to nerves. Although there's been a bit of fumble and lack of awareness is other games too.

But gee does he get into the right positions, use his body to remove defenders like Reid and that clunk mark - amazing. He seems to have a bit of everything, a few tricks which will hopefully make him very hard to shut down which is what makes the good forwards great. Multiple strings to their bow.

Glad to post here with sensible people that actually follow the StKilda Football Club.

I commented (to anybody within earshot at the 'G ) during the first quarter on Saturday that Paddy was providing a new focus in our forward line and the Magpies were stuck in two minds as to how to play him. They didn't have too many clues and obviously their dog ate their homework. Only feeble excuses for the Magpie defenders.

The mark he took, which ultimately ended his day, was one for the ages. Screamers come every week and the crowd roars. In Paddy's case the crowd was strangely silent when he bought the ball to ground (seeing stars no doubt) as its took a few seconds for what had jsut been witnessed to sink in. This was fearless, selfless football - Riewoldt like. Once it sunk in there was applause, albeit polite rather than rapturous. People were still coming to grips with what they had just see.

Paddy's true marking strength lies with is freakish ability to grasp the football. He is a clean two-handed mark from any angle with an incoming ball. He has such clean hands as he showed in the Melbourne game in round 17 last year.

He hasn't "arrived" as yet but, boy, am I chomping at the bit with anticipation. Just hope I am there to see it when he has a breakout.

Most of these were at least 21 before having a big impact (Lockett apart) and Paddy is still only 19!

The only reason I made a comparison to Lockett was in relation to body size and shape. Most modern key forwards are a different shape to McCartin, who is more in the Lockett/Dunstall body shape. Lockett was a prodigy, and I doubt any player of his size and shape will ever match him for skill.

Why compare him to anyone?

He is not the next plugger, he is the first Paddy McCartin.

The game is so vastly different nowdays as to when plugger played that Plugger may not be at all suited to AFL.

Paddy needs to get his endurance up, as well as his physical appearance.

Considering he is still underdeveloped and still at teenager, his upside and potential is pretty encouraging.

He is beginning to show his awareness and forward nous, but in the seniors hasn't had any luck this season.

Needs a string of games to get his development going on an upward spiral.

Will be a significant target up forward, and with Bruce's hard running and currently with Roo still playing, we have a versatile mobile KP forward line. With swingmen like Gilbert, Carlisle, and Goddard (and Hurley when we grab him) our forward looks very solid.

Will Paddy be an out and out champion? Hard to tell at this early stage, but he will certainly be a target with the other talls mentioned rotating around him.
