Modern Footy
So the Hawks:
lost clearances by 35%
lost stoppages by 28%
lost contested possession by 8%
But still kicked 100% more goals.
Please explain.

Re: Modern Footy
They play the perfect game of 'keepings off'. When they win the ball the simply dont give it back to the opposition. Their backline work sublimely for each other to cut off them opposition forward thrusts. Every player does the team thing they are beautifully coached....
SAINTS another day older another day closer to the Holy Grail!
Re: Modern Footy
It raises the meaning of some stats. What is a Carlton clearance worth with some young kid bumbling the ball out that registers as a clearance against Hodge flicking a clean 15m handball to his team-mate that launches a Hawthorn attack with clean air?
But it also shows the best coaches are constantly evolving depending on their squads strengths and weaknesses. Geelong were doing the same when they didn't have a great midfield. They rearranged to have Bartel launching attacks from the halfback instead. It's why Lyon I think breaks down at the pointy end of the year. He just keeps hammering the same system and doesn't tailor it or vary it according to players or just to change it up to be unpredictable. You have to keep evolving.
And this is just one game. When they want to Hawks can win plenty of contested ball. This might have been a trial of something different to see how their structure copes with the oppo winning it. That's what Clarkson does - he is always experimenting, trying different things.

Pretty much a myth about coaches trying different things. He may at this time of year but like every single club they are all very structured. Sides may change it around if they are getting well and truly thrashed like we did against the WB but the hawks don't change much, if anything at all, because they keep winning. His game plan might be different to some other sides but it is very structured and that is why they can win with stats like last night. Every single player knows their roll.

Re: Modern Footy
Carlton's disposal efficiency was 68%
The Hawks won the uncontested possession by 45%
And Carlton had 49 clangers compared to the Hawks' 34
They had more inside 50's and kicked 8.5 to 4.8...So Carlton's inaccuracy cost them too.

Re: Modern Footy
Scores per team possession is my guess (if 1 possession was when they get the ball to when they lose it or score). Not sure if there is actually a stat for that but I think there should be.
