ST KILDA could yet resist the urge to push a succession plan for star skipper Nick Riewoldt by retaining him as captain for one final year.

Riewoldt remains a towering presence at St Kilda, but Jarryn Geary and David Armitage both successfully filled in for him at various stages in 2015.



St Kilda will use the NAB Challenge to audition the rookie-list spot left vacant by Jake Carlisle’s ASADA suspension.

But first comes the leadership announcement next week after a meeting on Monday to work through the leadership group’s makeup.

St Kilda football boss Jamie Cox said the Saints were lucky to have a fantastic captain with a new generation of leaders also emerging.

“If Nick is our captain this year, we would be incredibly pleased knowing he’s a statesman of the game,’’ he said.

“But is it the right time to groom somebody who is that person? That is what we are working through.’’

Well it looks like Nick. I know we have had this discussion before but I would have Armo now. This is the first year in many I see an opportunity for another captain but I would say it will be the same one. We don't lose keeping Nick.

Sam Gilbert today nominated Geary as the player he thinks best to take over from Roo as captain, that's when Roo doesn't want it, still thinks Roo is the best bet at present

Now it's Roo, Schneider, Newnes & another player ( can't recall who it was - think it was Dempster, but coul be wrong have to look back on my past posts when I posted it.) who have mention Geary as next best for captain.

At the time I thought it was interesting when all mentioned Geary with no mention of Armo. I was very surprised at the time when Roo only mentioned Geary and Newnes. The only other person he has ever mentioned as a possible captain was BJ, that was when BJ was trying to fleece the Saints over his contract.

Gilbert said the St Kilda leadership group was strong and that remained the most important consideration.

"The best thing about that is that they have got all the boys following them and that is what I am enjoying the most," he said.

"As far as Nick goes, he is the best captain I have ever seen and probably one of the best players I have ever seen, so no matter who gets it he is going to be an extremely good leader around the club."

Riewoldt plays his 300th game in round two and will chalk up 200 games as captain of the club in round one if he remains in the job.

He is still one of the most influential players in the game, both on and off the field.

He's said a number of times that he thinks it would be good for someone else to take over the captaincy…

He wanted to hand it to Goddard… also said last year that he hoped to pass it on soon.

I can't see it hurting getting Armo in now, without Riewoldt still around for leadership support.

I reckon if it is handed over now, Geary will get the nod.

I actually think, when he is ready. Dunstan is the long term preference.

Just like Thomas gave opportunities to Hamill, Hayes, Riewoldt and Ball we now need to develop young players into leaders.
Just like Hamill, Hayes, Ball and Harvey before them didn't stop being leaders once the (c) stopped appearing after their names, Roo won't stop being a leader if he's not the skipper.

Let's see what Geary, Steven, Armo and others can do once given the opportunity.
Then let's develop the qualities in Billings, Dunstan, Goddard, McCartin and other youngsters.

If you think it doesn't work, then just remember that our longest serving captain was given this opportunity in his early days.

I forget which game it was, and I cant be bothered going through each game, but when Armo captained the side last year and we were getting smashed, he came out and said "lets not worry about the coaches kpi's and play to our strengths"

When a challenge came from opposition sides, senior Saints encouraged their younger teammates to simplify their approach by focusing on what they knew they could do well.

"We got their thoughts and it came back to focusing on what makes you a good player out there and don't worry about all the jargon the coaches throw at you, the KPIs and all that," Armitage said.

"Just get back to what makes you a good player.

"It's probably 90 per cent above the head when you're out there so everything you do during the week, the physical preparation, is really good.

"But when you're out there, it all comes down to what's above your shoulders.

"I think that was the real difference this week."
