Eddies fixture.

Post: # 1597566Post No77778 »

What do you guys think of eddies idea, or what would you change.

COLLINGWOOD boss Eddie McGuire has called for the winner of the NAB Challenge to be awarded a berth in the finals in a radical fixture idea.

The Magpies CEO also wants the AFL to split clubs into a top 12 and bottom six after round 17.

The top 12 teams would battle for finals positions over the final six rounds, while the bottom six will clash for another wildcard spot and the No.1 draft pick.

"What you end up getting is that every game will mean something," McGuire said on Triple M on Wednesday.

McGuire added nobody cared about the current NAB Challenge format, arguing they are just "glorified practice matches".

"The start of the season doesn't have much zing," McGuire said. "It is just hit and giggle. You just want to get through without injuries."

Offering the top draft pick as an incentive to the bottom six sides would also prevent any threat of tanking in the final rounds, he added.

"Good teams will still win the flag, more teams will make the finals," he said.

"By round 12 the bottom five or six teams are usually cooked, anyway."

Mickey Mouse solutions from Eddie. It's like an NFL schedule. No thanks!

I think that Eddie is trying to, be default, extend the AFL season from February to October.

By giving the NAB Cup winner a Finals spot, he's ensuring all NAB Cup games are intensely played, with first team players named each game.

Also, the NAB Cup winner will be 'on the ball' from march to end of August, knowing that they have a finals spot.

He's basically trying to squeeze the window for 'other sports' by making February NAB Cup games important.

USELESS FACT: The WADA case against Essendon (in Sydney as well) is exactly 10 years to the day that Australia qualified for the 2006 FIFA World Cup.

I'll have what he's smoking.

Seriously, playing off for the number one pick is nonsense. So, a club which finishes out of the finals by a game can play off for the number one pick while a team that has won i game for the season will most definitely miss out on it. Dumb, Eddie, just dumb.

May as well, mullet. Who's going to beat them? As for Eddie, there must be a catch, such as the filth gets direct entry into the GF every year. Check the fine print.

Two footballs. The grounds are big enough. How much fun would it be. Would be the equivalent of 20-20 to tests - crazy, fun, action packed. What tactics would teams use.

Whilst we're at it, why not include a third team and another set of goal posts on one of the wings. God help the game if Eddie ever becomes the boss of the AFL. It'll become a circus.

Don't agree with Eddies plan, but at least he is putting something out there. Not sure the current system is fair but it is a lot better than a few years ago.

There are a lot of inequities in footy, the fixture is one that we should be able to fix. I think splitting into conferences is a valid option and worth looking into further.

winner of the pre season cup can just nurse their team through the home and away season.... rotate rests through the squad... get them fresh and peaking by finals time..

so... doubt that one will fly..

some changes to fixturing should occur though, current method is a joke

My solution: 17 game season, play each other once...

Then have a fully fledged state of origin series to fill those extra weeks... make it a huge tournament, big money.... each state playing home and away.. would be bigger than NRL origin... huge opportunity for AFL football to be played at a higher standard

Would never work. There are so many contracts in place plus the wages of players and I don't think anyone would care about state of origin as we have sides in every state anyway unlike the NRL.
Tv rights would drop about 25%. Sides would have to leave the competition because the AFL couldn't fund them.

I would be willing to bet that both scenarios would benefit the filth which are more than likely going to finish outside the 8

The problem with the NAB Challenge is that it is already, and has been even more so in the past, too significant.

Eddie's suggestion is moving in the wrong direction. These games should be low key affairs played on the old grounds and some country grounds (you can spare me the travel matches), and purely for the purpose of getting ready for the season proper and allowing fans to see how things are shaping up.

Also the dickheads who are the so called rule custodians can fart about with their 'improvements'.

An alternative proposal would be to have a top nine and a bottom nine with three getting relegated and three promoted each year.

That way teams in each nine could play each other twice making it an eighteen game competition. The finals competition would feature only six teams - which would make finals more interesting imo and less drawn out.

It would mean Richmond would be forever pinging back and forth between tiers caught in a weird cortex loop.

Well, that seems pointless. That system works in the NFL, because they have 30 teams in the competition.

The AFL need to arrange for Eddie to be drug tested or get his head checked. I'm not fan at all, you would have situation's down the track of teams who are around about the 10-11th best team (possibly us) or in a rebuilding stage trying to "list manage" at about round 12-13 realising a premiership isn't anywhere near on the horizon but playing off for pick 1 is a much more viable alternative for future success.

and that's the bottom line

The NAB challenge is just a round of practice games. Do they still have a grand final for it?

Go back to the Tuesday night during the season fixture of the Escort Cup (or whatever it was called) and play for BIG BUCKS!
I remember Dermie being called a 5 day and 5 night premiership player. We've also won more night premierships than day.
Make a big night of it each week being it's own competition.

As ex-president Peter Summers said:
“If we are going to be a contender, we may as well plan to win the bloody thing.”

This...together with Balme's WADA comments during the week...side-effects of a failed 'supplements program' at managerial level?

"GEELONG President Colin Carter has rubbished Eddie McGuire’s fixture proposals, suggesting an even draw is near impossible under an 18-club format.

Carter and McGuire, who butted heads in 2014 over equalisation measures, also hold opposing views over the AFL’s current scheduling system.

McGuire has been a vocal advocate for fixture reform in recent times, however Carter believes the current system “is not too bad at the moment”.

“I think it is very easy to think up gimmicks,” Carter said when asked to respond to McGuire’s proposals on SEN.

“I don’t think our balance is far adrift at the moment.”

On Wednesday morning, McGuire urged the AFL to consider a tiered system in order to maintain interest levels for late season matches between clubs not in the finals race."
