http://www.afl.com.au/news/2016-01-15/y ... -extension
McCartin, who finished the year with six games to his name, told AFL.com.au in August he had enjoyed his first year at the Saints, so much so he could see himself remaining in the black, red and white for his career.

"It'd be fantastic to be a one-club player. That'd be awesome, but I'm just a small part of it. I'm on the journey. I'll be around as long as the Saints need me," he said.

"It's a place I've absolutely loved so far. It's been unreal."

McCartin's impending commitment beyond 2016 – when his initial two-year contract expires – adds to the list of young St Kilda players to have signed on for the future.

Jack Billings, Jack Newnes and Luke Dunstan have signed on until the end of 2017 and Blake Acres is committed through to the end of 2018.

The three other Saints drafted alongside McCartin in 2014 – Jack Lonie, Daniel McKenzie and Hugh Goddard – have all already extended their contracts with the Saints.

Lonie and McKenzie added an extra year to their deals to tie them to the Saints until the end of 2017, while Goddard will be a Saint until at least the end of 2018.

Not really big news.
Hardly surprising, it'd be pretty disappointing if he was looking to get out after one year.
Will be great news in a few years time when hopefully he is a proven player.

not big news signing the No1 draft pick?

not surprising, no... but still big news.

bigger news than the first year players spending a few days at Rooeys or David Armitage doing lightsaber duels!!!

resignings are actual news, and the most important ouit of season news.... id have pushed for a 4 year deal

I would imagine he would have been originally contracted for 2015 and 2016. Two year extension, now contracted 2016 - 2018 That is good news.

BIG news would be a four year deal.
Signing for 2 years is expected news.

Expected news is still news. Something could've gone pear-shaped and he could've held off on a new deal due to advances from other clubs or being undecided or unhappy at the club. This signing shows more stability.

With the ink still drying on his fresh deal, McCartin said he was more than thrilled to re-sign given the plethora of high quality young talent at the club.

“(It was) a pretty clear decision. The club showed a lot of faith in me last year picking me up and they’ve been really good to me,” McCartin told saints.com.au.

“It was a no-brainer – just sign the contract and get on with it.

“It’s a really exciting time; I reckon we’re on the right path. I think last year we showed some really, really good signs and hopefully our solid pre-season can transfer into some on-field performances in 2016.

“All the boys signed on last year, so as I said it was a no-brainer. Just get it done quickly, get it out of the way.

“The club was really good to me last year in picking me up and I came through with a few boys that I was really good mates with and I’ve made a lot of good mates here as well

http://www.afl.com.au/news/2016-01-19/f ... for-finals
On and off last year we were really good, we [showed] really good pressure and played really well as a team at times, but then there were times we let ourselves down," McCartin said.

"Hopefully, we can turn that around this year and turn that into more consistent performances.

"I'd like to think (we can play finals this year). Every team goes into the season hoping they will play finals and to get the most out of themselves, so we're definitely wanting to go as far as we can this year.

"I think the way we've been training lately, we can put in a pretty good effort this year."

McCartin managed six games in his first season, making his debut in round three as a last-minute replacement for Nick Riewoldt, before dropping back to the VFL to work on his craft.

The 19-year-old power forward returned late in the campaign and showed his potential taking nine marks and booting a goal in a win over Melbourne in round 17.

However, he still attracted criticism from pundits including Dermott Brereton, who said the young Saint needed to work hard at "physical aspects" of his game.

McCartin said he took constructive criticism on board and after completing about 85 per cent of pre-season training – more than double from last year - he had made some "pretty significant" improvements in his conditioning.

"I'm not a massive reader of all that kind of stuff, but it's Dermie's job to do that kind of thing – he's entitled to his opinion as everyone else is," McCartin said at St Kilda Sea Baths, where the Saints launched a new membership drive.

"You cop all that and that's just part of being an AFL player, you get criticism – whether that's constructive or not – from anywhere.

"As a first-year player as well you come in as a bit of a sponge and just try to absorb as much as you can, so I take constructive criticism wherever I can.

“It’s a fair bit different to my first one. Last year I probably did about 30 to 40 per cent of pre-season, so far I’ve done about 80 (per cent),” McCartin said
Wow that's a big step up in preseason work and shows why he didn't set the world on fire in his first year, and probably won't again this year seeing as he's still not doing the full preseason. He would be treated pretty carefully for a few reasons - a big unit who would have come in with some puppy fat. And then there is the diabetes which the club and himself would still be getting their head around exactly how it impacts on him playing at the upmost intensity in the AFL.

I really don't think the Diabetes would have any effect at all but his being unfit and a first year player would have had a huge effect. As some of us said previously he was unfit for AFL footy last season so its impossible to see a full upside until he gets pretty much AFL fit. The bonus of drafting someone with puppy fat is they should have huge improvement and even with that we rated him number one. That is a great sign.

Can you do at least a little bit of research before making such ridiculous off the cuff responses Plugger. I'm getting sick of having to do this for you. Do you know how to use google? Its a serious disease and you should stop being so dismissive just to be contrary to me. Thats childish. I think the inside person on this board (forget their name) mentioned Paddy had an "episode" and he's been getting a handle on where his limits are currently.

One area of scientific understanding that remains extremely limited is management of competitive athletes with diabetes. While there are a number of anecdotal descriptions of management strategies used by these athletes and several published case reports, there are very few well-controlled studies that add to our knowledge of formulating effective treatment plans. It is encouraging to find that athletes with diabetes have been able to achieve outstanding success at all levels of competition from school-yard playing fields to the Olympic games. Management of competitive athletes with diabetes presents far different challenges than those typically encountered in routine patient care. An effective management plan must consider the typical demands of training and competition, the goals of the athlete, factors related to sports participation that may affect glucose homeostasis, safety of athletic participation, adequate monitoring of blood glucose, and possible adjustments to diet and insulin to allow safe and effective athletic performance.
http://www.gssiweb.org/Article/sse-90-d ... ive-sports
Thus, for people with diabetes, the metabolic demands of, and acute responses to, participation in most sports are largely unknown (Peirce, 1999). Another major gap in our knowledge is a lack of understanding of how diabetes affects recovery from athletic contests. Our personal observations suggest that diabetic university-level athletes in football, swimming, and track may not recover as rapidly as their nondiabetic teammates. This might be because the postexercise resynthesis of glycogen, the storage form of glucose in the muscle and liver is slower in people with diabetes (Hermansen, 1980). Thus, these athletes may not be completely glycogen-restored before the next practice or game. Another documented concern is delayed hypoglycemia. This phenomenon can occur for from 4–48 hours after exercise (MacDonald, 1987). Delayed hypoglycemia that occurs at night can disturb sleep, which could contribute to prolonged fatigue during the training season.

He has had it since he was 6 years old for a start and then played under 18's football for at least 2 years. They would have done so much research into it before he even got to AFL level. The stuff you bothered to look up doesn't mean anything. Its just telling us what is required all of which McCartin would have done many years ago. I lived with a guy who found out he had Diabetes just 5 months before he played footy. He struggled for about 3 to 4 months but once the doctors worked out everything it had bugger effect on his footy. McCartin had had diabetes for 12 years before he was drafted so forget the cut and paste and give factual examples as I have given you.
