So why don't we give Jack Steven and ARmo a year off? Don't pretend this doesn't have an impact. Obviously you want him out there, locking in with his teammates - the back six especially. We may only be a couple of years away from finals. It's not the end of our club but it does have an impact. Why do we need to wait until next year to analysis the impact? We have all the facts now - he ain't playing for us in 2016! That's not good.joeyjohnw wrote:Forget about this year- It's about how Carlisle will return next year. If he's fit and firing, what's the problem? As mentioned earlier a year out of the game can actually extend players careers- like having an extra long off season. And if we are looking to the future, then that is a good thing. If next year was part of our premiership window, I'd be devastated. But it's nowhere near that. So move on, I guess. And wait until next year to make our true judgment.

His contract is not being paid this year he is not able to receive money from us whilst baned though he will be able to take legal action against essendon to recoupe his money so it was a front loaded contract meaning we just saved ourself 700 thousand and get a 25 yo on average wage next year

Re: Carlisle ban?
My guess with Hawthorn is that they have looked long term also, they have a few older players so if Jake sat out a year he's ready
next year after retirements, bonus is all going well he'd play this year.

Re: Carlisle ban?
so would we have played finals this year if Carlisle didn't get banned ? .. I doubt it. Doesnt actually change much. If anything Hugh will get a few more games under his belt and potentially be more advanced next year when we really need him to step up with the likely retirement of Fisher and possibly Dempster.
If Carlisle can keep himself fit and come back in good nick, then we are still placed to challenge for finals in 2017.

It's more like #Jake on standby.

Good call!8856brother wrote:As long as he's dominating when we challange it's not a big deal. He can get his body right now. Dont send him overseas.
Get around him Bluth!
I'm rapt that we managed to secure Jake Carlisle and the decision to recruit him will pay big dividends when we're seriously ready to challenge - we weren't going to win the flag this year anyway. It was always a dicey decision to recruit him given that these guys potentially had bans hanging over their heads, but I personally thought it was worth the risk. Who'd have thought they'd be put out of the game for this long? If there was any penalty, I was thinking maybe a few weeks....
It's important that the club gets around him, he's one of us now (remember), even if you thought the decision to recruit him was stupid. No doubt he'll be doing it tough and will need help to get through it.

Who the hell knew it would be 12 months. It's so easy to make bulls*** up.Bluthy wrote:They will be doing some soul searching down at the club for sure. If they knew he would have a year out before I don't think they do the deal. That's a crucial year where he could have started playing along side his new team mates and learning how they all play and forming a partnership with Goddard before we start gearing up for finals. This sets our plan back. But I don't think we have any recourse so really now its about making sure Mr Carlisle stays out of trouble, keeps himself fit and doesn't self-implode.
Does anyone know if Richo can keep contact with him and/or meet with him regularly off-site? We really need Richo to be the full father figure for this cat now.

And presumably we can upgrade one of our gun Rookies (if not O'Kearney perhaps Coughlan as a "like for like")BackFromUSA wrote:Plus crucial games into Goddard and Delaney still there to handle the gorillas in 2016.jaxons wrote:Positives are:

Why would we recruit someone whose body isn't right?
We knew he had knee tendonitis - and his best years (or year) may be behind him.

Re: Carlisle ban?
Sorry Jaxon's - I love your insights but I don't believe this. This is a classic thing almost all clubs start saying straight after the draft - oh we would have taken him with our earlier pick if we didn't trade it. Its trying to create real positivity about their selections with members. None of the phantom drafts had him high in the draft. Grehsam is a very neat, clean, busy little player that apparently is also a good leader and could go on to be a great player for us. But at pick 5 there were players you could get elite everything - height, skill, ball getting, goal kicking the lot. I could see the club saying a bundle of Carlisle and Gresham is better value then just pick 5 and a second rounder. But to say Gresham would have been taken at pick 5 doesn't sound right to me.jaxons wrote:* We would have taken Gresham with pick 5 and White with our second round pick so we really didn't give up as much as you think.

No, we don't. Players suspended cannot be paid.BigMart wrote:Of course we pay him, he signed a contract.
Think of the positives, it could add 5 years to his career.
It should add a year or two to the back end of his career though. If he needs any surgery for anything, now is the time.

Re: Carlisle ban?
Tendonitis goes away with rest. This is also true of tenocinovitis. It is exacerbated by continual usage of the same ligaments and muscles. If he isn't playing or training at the intense level for a year this will certainly mend itself. There is also surgery which can fast-track this. I'm sure that the club will send him off now to get any and all surgery to clean up any issues he has had and he should be ready in 2017. He can't train or have any contact with the club staff/resources for 12 months anyway, so they may as well get this sorted. We are a bottom four/five side anyway so apart from a couple of extra wins and maybe a couple of less thrashings we may not have been greatly better off in 2016.samoht wrote:That's another thing.jaxons wrote:Positives are:

Then his former employer can fund it, can't they? Or the players' white knight, the AFLPA.saintsRrising wrote:As I understand it the Saints cannot assist in anyway accept drug counselling.samuraisaint wrote:. If he needs any surgery for anything, now is the time.

Makes everything super-peachy! This is a great day for our club. Really positive. Jake gets a years rest which could add 3 years (and another 3 flags) to his career. And we know how well Jake handles his down time - lots of time for snap-chatting Brilliant! Goddard gets to play too - probably wouldn't have played at all this year. We're not playing finals this year so players clearly only get value from playing footy when its in a finals year, so no loss at all. In fact lets give half the list this year off to rest up. And lets give Carlisle next year off as well as we probably won't play finals then either and he gets no value from playing in a no finals year. Everythings good. No impact at all. I'm sure the sponsers will be happy having a convicted PED cheat (and rec drug user) on the books. Its all good in the St Kilda hood today!! Whooo-hoooo!!!!
Should we inject more of our players with PED's so that we can get even more positivity next off-season?

Until the rose-coloured glasses arrive, we can listen to this repeatedly. Maybe it should be our club song? "Don't grumble, give a whistle!"
