Andrew Lovett was the worst recruiting decision in history.

1 Million over 3 years, money tied up in the SC and he was detested.

Carlisle is only a loss of 650k for the one season

But really that means for 2017/18 contract he will be on around 1 million per season. Slightly overpaid for a guy who's only finished top ten in a b&f once in 6 seasons
Those are not the correct numbers for Carlisle.

Only thing that matters is that he's ours now.

And it's not like we didn't realise this may happen.

If we hope to get anything out of our "investment" then we need to stand by him and support him. He seems like the sort of bloke who could really go off the rails if he's left to his own devices.

The bloke's still very important to our long term plans.

Carlisle can't even train with us.
By 2017 he will probably be an overweight ice addict.

Suck it up. It's happened and no amount of whining will change it.

WADA was always going to whack them. They don't like being lied to and being stuffed around. They also need to be seen to have "teeth" when it comes to these issues. The decision to recruit him was a calculated risk, but IMHO, one worth taking. He will still have 6-7 years left in him and we'll need him at his best in 2017 and beyond, when we will start to genuinely challenge again. With a Fisher still there, it's not a tragedy. The unexpected bonus of Goddard last year also softens the blow. Make no mistake, Carlisle is a gun. Potentially elite and rated by many at Essendope as being in their top three just two years ago. Deep breath, everyone. Not good, but no disaster either.

The club would've factored in a 3 month ban, so they'll be shattered as much as we are!!

Not allowed to pay him.

He can sue Essendon for the loss of income.

I believe his contract was front loaded ;-)

So more than $700k
If this is true that we're not allowed to pay him then at least the club is not pouring money down the drain like it did with lovett .
I just hope that a year out of football doesn't hurt his ability too much .
It doesn't take a lot for the game to pass you by .

Essendon have already got permission to use top up players from the VFL.

We should push to be allowed 1 top up player to replace Carlisle on our list.

As I put on here when Essendon FC self reported, they are in very serious trouble - and despite all the nonsense, denial froth and bubble from that "great" Corporate Leader, the very unpleasant and dictatorial Little and the equally unpleasant individual Hird, this is the outcome - as it was always going to be from my informant on this matter (who is unfortunately no longer with us to see the outcome he predicted).

I feel for the players.

Competition, environment peer group pressure, egos et al mainfest also in sporting clubs (and elsewhere).

So, if the Club is promoting such a program as Essendon did then competition and peer group pressure impacts on player decisions - because the players wish to remain on an AFL List and play AFL football with the Club they are contracted to.

I would absolve the players in these circumstances and put penalty where it rightly belongs - on the Essendon Football Club, its Directors and its administration (not playing) servants.

Essendon FC should be disbanded (and maybe the actions it will now attract will collapse it financially particularly given its debt profile).

Its Directors and administration (not playing) servants should be banned - including into other pursuits so, for example, Little is banned from Directorships full stop - including Corporate.

In terms of St Kilda and other Clubs who have recruited disallusioned former Essendon players (and those players remaining on Essendon's List), 2016 will pass so age and desire will come into the equation for 2017 and onwards.

Much the same as a player "doing" an ACL and missing a season - except there is no rehabilitation.

So St Kilda still have Carlisle's contribution to look forward to - and the Club should embrace him and move forward on that basis.

In terms of the List, St Kilda have had an enduring problem with key defenders (hence Delaney - and Goddard) and a cornerstone of addressing that very significant deficiency remains in place.

So, to those complaining, as always, look past the nose on your face to the ultimate outcome you are attempting to achieve.

The building blocks are still there.

And we have another Drafting and Trading period where Carlisle, a 198cm key defender with ability, is the cream on the cake because he is already locked away.

Best post yet, well said and very balanced view. This will still work out very well for us remembering that without the whole saga, we would have not been able to gain Jake at all. Still many positives here

Why should St Kilda suffer in this instance?
Essendon should be the only club to suffer the consequences of their wrong doing - what they gained and what we lost from the Carlisle trade should be reversed. It's only fair and right.
If it can't be reversed this year, then some sort of concessions from Essendon to us next year should apply.

I wonder what Hurley, Watson and Heppell will be doing in 2017? Let's get into them and their management from day one. Let's kick the Essendope corpse and use their self inflicted misfortune to advance our cause. Imagine picking one of those up for free. Hope Jake is on good terms with some of his former team mates. We may yet emerge out of all of this, way ahead.

Agreed. I'm just going to pretend we're drafting him next year and add him to that crop.
I'll call it the 'best drafting ever'
