Even stars like Hodge are replaced

Post: # 1592969Post ripplug66 »

The Hawks look like having Lewis as captain next season. Hodge has been one of the greatest captains in the last 30 years and still in form but the hawks had the courage to replace him, well maybe. The point of this thread is it time to replace Rooy. Previous to now I have been totally against him going because we had no logical choice but I think we have one now. I will go out on a limb and say Armo should captain our club next season. The time is right. Champs like Rooy can still do what he does just without the title of Captain. As the Labor party would say, Its time.

You want a mate of Dustin Martin as captain?

Certainly wouldn't do any harm to shake things up a bit. Develop some leadership for the future. As you say, Riewoldt would still be Riewoldt. The title or lack of it would not mean any less respect for him from his teammates or the fans.

Looks more than likely that Freo will make the switch from Pav to Fyfe also.
Bob Murphy will then become the oldest skipper in the AFL (besides Roo).
Would not be surprised if the Bombers switched from Watson to Heppell as well.

Captains are over rated, they don't always win the coin toss.

The Saints are under review, will it make any difference to the underachievers ?

I want Rooey to captain more games than Sticks.

No harm in one more season at the top and Armo the next year. What a great opportunity to have a Saint in the record books. Rarely do you get so many years out of a captain - too good an opportunity to pass it up. We are going to be fairly crap in 2016. 2017 onwards is when things get a bit more serious and we really need to move into the next phase.

Until there is an obvious replacement, Roo stays on. Armitage and Geary are thereabouts, but not 100% ready. One should be selected as stand alone vice captain to Riewoldt for next season.

It probably depends if Roo wants to do it. I'm sure he'll have a good chat with Richo about it. He may have had enough of all the commitments. But then again he may love doing it, he's obviously very proud of being skipper of this great club. I think Armo is ready and would be a great captain. He acts like a leader out there, getting everyone talking, lifting to change the momentum of a game when things are getting away. He presents and talks really well and is a great age bracket to have authority but still connect with the young brigade.

If Armo isn't ready now then I cant see why he would be ready next year. He is ready, its whether the club or Rooy want to hand over the captaincy to him. I think its time but I can understand others who say let Rooy have it until he doesn't want it. I cant understand records or players not being ready.

I don't rate Armo as leader (obviously without personal knowledge) and I don't think anyone else is close to the mark, so I think Rooey should stay on.

Fair enough but can I ask why you don't rate him as a leader and who will be Captain in the next 2 years if it isn't Armo?

Armo just had a breakout season. I'd like to see him string two A-grade seasons together and show more onfield leadership before he is considered for captaincy.

The captains in my lifetime have been Roo, Hayes, Ball, Hamill, Harvey, Burke, Loewe, Frawley and Barker. David Armitage's name does not belong among those just yet.

I noticed in a video that was on the Saints.com site earlier this season. Roo was asked about the captain's position, how long would he retain it, would he think of giving it up. He came out with the usual statements....... It would be discussed with Richo etc at end of year. It's whatever decision the club wants to make etc etc. Then he went on to mention 2 names one was Geary, the other was Newnes. He mentioned Newnes in the context of a young player coming through in the leadership mould. He at no stage mentioned Armo. Also remember that other video where Roo had a go at Armo at training in a rather frustrated manner when Armo was attempting some smarty effort at training that didn't come off.
The only other person I have heard Roo mention as a possible captain to take over from him was Brendon Goddard when Goddard was trying to have Saints agree to the contract BJ wanted to stay at the Saints.
How much will Roo influence team mates and the Club on a choice of next captain I don't know......... however those 2 instances make me think Roo isn't Armos greatest supporter. I'm possibly way off the mark and they are close buddies and he not only respects Armo as a player but also a person that has the right character/traits to be a captain

Harley captained geelong to a couple of flags. Armo is now our second best player. You don't need to be a star, you need to be a leader and have the respect of the other players. No idea if he has that but I certainly don't care that he isn't as good as those mentioned. If we are waiting for a second great season it may or may not happen so what happens when Roo retires? Do we not worry about a Captain? If Roo captains I wont give a dam but if its good enough for the Hawks to replace someone after winning 3 flags then I don't have a problem if we do the same. I still think Roo will Captain by the way.

No idea who might be captain next, as I said, no obvious candidates. Should be clearer after this year.

On Armo, I'm just not convinced he's a great role model. Apparently took a long time to find a professional attitude and still doesn't seem to be the best trainer (though he's obviously pretty good). The main issue though is that he's not the smartest guy. I'm sure he could lead by example but I'm not sure he's got the smarts that Riewoldt has to get his message across and connect with individuals in the team.

As I said, only second-hand knowledge so I hope I'm wrong.

My informant really rates Rooey, so maybe it's just by comparison.

Roo needs to stay captain without a doubt.
If you believe otherwise then answer this hypothetical question
"You are an eager 18 year old who just got drafted to st kilda, training is really tough and you look around, who do you see and think to yourself "I want to be like ....."?
Roo, end of thread.

Hodge being replaced as leader probably has plenty to do with being caught DUI just before his finals campaign.

I think Riewoldt is an exceptional leader, role-model and captain. Can't think of any good reason to make a change as long as he wants the position.

I didn't know you couldn't be like Roo if he wasn't Captain.

Dustbin should've pretended he was Luke Hodge at the restaurant:

He would've ended up driving the woman home with a police escort, done an ad for chopsticks and been in a doco all about 'Hodgey's new tatts'
