Re: Luke Ball back in the fold????
Great player, loved StK
He walked because of R Lyon went to Coll won a premiership (finished top 5 in the b@f)and became a VC
Lyons and the fitness staffs assessment of Ball was incorrect, and losing him for zero, trading pick 16 for Lovett was a $1M mistake
Said it at the time ... The beginning of the end of that era

Re: Luke Ball back in the fold????
And being a smart cat who I'm sure had plenty of in depth conversations with coaches, he was able to hand them blueprints to our tactics in a very detailed, thoughtful way no doubt. It's not a coincidence that suddenly Collingwood had a brilliant fwd press system up and going based off ours (that we let slide for some reason). I heard he was extremely pissed off about being dropped to the two's and told he needed to "get on the spread" more after we had destroyed his speed by playing him too much early and developing Ostoistis Pubis. Half a grand final was the final straw. Man management is not Lyon's strong point. Another of those sliding door moments that haunt us.desertsaint wrote:Just the player Collingwood needed though.SaintPav wrote:Great player but was not the player we needed in 2010.

Re: Luke Ball back in the fold????
Didn't like Luke going go the Filth, but as a club we did not do the right thing about his body. G.T basically used him as a battering ram (clearly recall the films of him after a game where he couldn't hardly move. RL's use of him has already been mentioned. The Filth did get his body right, when we didn't manage to do it.
It's cool for me he comes back, we should acknowledge all past players. He deserves a welcome

Then they go and buy into the corporate crap, buy into the whole money making narrative and leave any useful critical thinking skills at the door.Bunk_Moreland wrote:Crap. I went to school with a bunch. The median score in my year level at school was 96.4. You go to an expensive enough private school, get good enough tutors and get pushed enough by your parents, you can get 95 even if you're a complete deadshit. Exams measure preparedness, not intelligence.Bunk_Moreland wrote:Crap. How many people of medicore intelligence get high VCE scores.bergholt wrote:Plenty of smart people are useless in the workplace. You do realize that there are people that are passing uni degrees that can't even speak English? When the group assignments are put in place those that can speak English carry those that can't and are assessed giving equal credits. But then how do you think the uni's pay their fees?Bunk_Moreland wrote:Crap. Re: Luke Ball back in the fold????
Fair question. For me it's some combination of ability to think on your feet, being articulate, being able to solve problems, having a decent level of emotional intelligence, being able to think strategically or tactically depending on the situation. A couple of the guys I'm thinking of got very good VCE results and went on to do Medicine, and they're (presumably) terrible doctors because all they're really good at is reciting back lists of facts. Life isn't an exam.SaintPav wrote:Interesting.

Well said.stkfc1 wrote:It gives the club a chance to give something back to the past players. Re: Luke Ball back in the fold????
Agree Lyin didn't do the right thing by him.
But Ball didn't do the right thing by StKilda.
We got nothing for him.
And he sold out our game plan.
I don't see him as a respected past player.
I see him as a player who chose to leave and sold us out.
Should be no welcome mat out for him.
Surprised that he sees himself in retirement as an ex-Saint rather than an ex-Collingwood given he chose them.

Luke once referred to Collingwood as his wife and St Kilda as his old girlfriend.

Luke
with Hayes, Baker, Blake, Hudghton, Dempster, Armitage , Burke and Voss
are the toughest saints ive seen (in the modern era)
and not because they dished it out... that aint tough... in fact, much the opposite
But they attacked the contest with ferocity and complete disregard for themselves... its why they were often knocked out
Ball put his head over the pill in situations where angels dare .... and did it time and again... in a saints jumper
if people can't respect that, its quite strange IMO
He left in acromonious circumstances (he wasn't rated or respected)..... but he never dissed the club...
The fact we got ZERO for him... was entirely the clubs fault, as it was the clubs decision to move him on, and the clubs decision not to come up with a trade was also their fault as it was their resposibility. The clubs made the decision to offer a 1M contract to AL instead. It was an obvious mistake. its that simple. The fabric of the club which was Hayes, Baker, Milne, Roo, Kosi, Ball, Blake, Maguire, Clarke, Montagna, Dal Santo, Goddard ... was now done... and the loyalty many of them had shown to StK was out the window.

Re: Luke Ball back in the fold????
I am not so sure we wanted to move him on. In fact , I am sure we tried to talk him out of leaving. I am also convinced that when a trade did not happen , we hoped that he would not sook, cop it on the chin and do the right thing by the supporters and STAY.
I am also sure that he was part of draft manipulation that saw him go to Collingwood and not Melbourne, who I will never understand why they did not say "too bad Luke , we are picking you whether you like it or not"
Training at Collingwood before he was on their list, yeah he did plenty wrong by us. Perhaps he was doing it to spite Ross, but really he stuck it up his mates and all of us who had cheered him on for years. Both Ross and Luke came out of this sorry sage looking pretty grubby in my eyes.

I agree 100%. His decision was justified by winning a premiership at Collingwood.BigMart wrote:Luke

Re: Luke Ball back in the fold????
His decision to stay may have been justified also by winning a flag for us in 2010.
